About the Editor

M. E. El-Hawary was born in Egypt and received the bachelor of engineering degree
in electrical engineering (First Class Honours) from the University of Alexandria in
Egypt in 1965 and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Alberta,
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 1972. His teaching experience includes service at the
Universities of Alexandria and Alberta. In 1972-1973 he was an associate professor
at the Graduate School for Engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro
in Brazil. He joined Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1974 and served as
chairman of Electrical Engineering during 1976-1981. He has been a professor of
electrical engineering at the Technical University of Nova Scotia (now DalTech)
since 1981. He is currently associate dean of Engineering at DalTech of Dalhousie
University.
Dr. El-Hawary has written over 150 technical papers, mainly in power system
engineering. He is the author of three textbooks on power systems analysis, principles of electric machines, and control system engineering, all published by PrenticeHall. He is also coauthor of two research monographs on economic operation of
power systems. In the IEEE Power Engineering Society, he is chair of the Operating
Economics Subcommittee, Life Long Learning Subcommittee, and Awards and
Recognitions of the System Operations and Dynamic Performance Committees.
Within IEEE, he is the chair of the Prize Papers/Scholarship Committee and a
member of the Awards Board. Dr. El-Hawary is also associate editor of Electric
Machines and Power Systems and International Journal of Electric Energy and Power
Systems. He is a member of the IEEE Press Board and serves as editor of the
Understanding Science and Technology Series.
Dr. El-Hawary is a Fellow of both the IEEE and the Engineering Institute of
Canada. He is married to Dr. Ferial El-Hawary (nee EI-Bibany), and together they
have a daughter and two sons.
