Dear Fraser Wood Community,
Welcome back & Happy 2017! I hope everyone had a restful and fun-filled
winter break.
Heres whats happening this winter
Winter Weather & Play
It is that time of year, when the weather stays chilly and the occasional flutter/snow
starts to fall or the rain decides to start and doesnt stop! Please make sure to send
your children with warm comfy clothing (winter boots, mittens/gloves, scarf & toque) to ensure
they are comfortable during colder days. Play is an essential part of a childs learning and
development. It has been linked to cognitive, physical and socio-emotional achievement. As a
school we believe in and encourage play, so students will be going outside at recess and lunch,
rain, snow or shine.
Our welcome bell rings at 8:35am as a signal to students and families that our school day is
starting and children should go to their classrooms. Teachers begin instruction at 8:40am when
the second bell rings. This Fall we noticed a higher than normal volume of students arriving after
the 8:40am second bell. Mornings and routines are very important to students success for the
day and beyond. A large chunk of information and academics that students engage in at school
begins right at that 8:40am bell. Please make it a part of your household morning routine to have
children awake and at school by 8:35am, ready to learn.
If your child will NOT be at school, please leave a message or call us at 604-589-6442 to let us
know. We have a Safe Arrival program at Fraser Wood that requires Mrs. Beuk, our Office Clerk
to call all homes of students who are away and unaccounted for, to ensure that they are safe
and/or where they should be. It would save a lot of time if you could please remember to phone,
so as to relieve the volume of daily calls Mrs. Beuk has to make. Thank you!
Sports Updates
Basketball season is officially underway in the next week! We have both a Boys
and a Girls team again this year. A very special thank you to Ms. Pilton, Ms. Aitken & Ms. BrynMcLeod for organizing, coaching and refereeing.
We will be kick starting our annual Jump Rope For Heart campaign to build our physical stamina
and to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation on January 12th. Stay tuned for more
information next week
Its hard to believe that the snowy weather and piles of snow are still upon us! We thank you for
your patience as we deal with less driving space and tighter stalls due to ploughing and snow
piles. Please remember student safety is our biggest priority, so leaving a few minutes early will
help with the congestion. The parking lot will remain for staff only, not for student drop-off and
in and outs, there is not enough space due to snow. Please ensure you are careful when walking
and have proper footwear on. Shoveling and de-icing have been done, but it is still slippery.
Grade 7 Bottle Drive Fundraiser
Do you have any empty bottles at home? If so, please bring them to the Drop-Off Bay on the
morning of Wednesday January 11th. Our Grade 7 students will be happy to collect them from
you to support their year-end events fundraising!
