Outline of unit

During this unit you will decide which area of the media sector you
would like to pursue.
This is an important and necessary opportunity for you to explore
career avenues and how to progress in that sector.
The outcome will lead you into a specific direction for your second year at Henley
College, University choices, work placement opportunities apprenticeships and
freelance work.
This unit is designed to provide a coherent body of
knowledge that will enable you to develop an
understanding of the range of roles, responsibilities,
employment and progression opportunities available
within your chosen sector.
You will be encouraged to reflect on and record
relevant information as well as be adventurous and
open minded in exploring, and recording a variety of
roles available. You will need to be ambitious but also
realistic in your approach as whilst we all dream of
being a Hollywood film director or famous TV
producer you will need to know how to start off in the
industry in order to work your way up to your dream
job.
As well as progression routes for your own career you will be encouraged to look
at gender roles, ethnic minorities, and discrimination within your sector as well
as the governing bodies and unions so you have an overall knowledge of that
particular sector.
Once you have researched your area, looked a progression routes and
employment opportunities you will be asked to put a CV and show reel together
along with an interactive webpage selling yourself. This body of work will be
taken to an interview situation where you will interview for a starter job within
your chosen industry.

For this learning outcome you will be required to brainstorm,


research and access information that will help you decide on
the direction of your career.
You will need to provide:

A detailed list of your media career desires and goals


A comprehensive reason as to why you want to pursue that career
A list of skills and personality traits you already have that will enable
you to succeed
Evidence of Brainstorming jobs roles
Research into how you can get a foot in the door (university /
apprentices,
work placement)
Top universities you can apply to
Top apprenticeship schemes
Where you can find work placement for this career choice
Evidence that you have seen a careers advisor
Evidence of primary research talking to companies, talking to
somebody who does your job already and career experts in your field.

LO2: Understand the skills needed to pursue a career in the


creative media industry
Evaluate a range of practices and apply these practices to support own
development

Now you know the job role and career path you wish to pursue
you need to research the skills you will need to succeed and
put a portfolio of work together in a professional way in order
to obtain that job.
You will need to provide:

Understanding of FREELANCING within your


sector as well as for your role
Research into the governing bodies for your
sector
Understanding of the role of the union
within your sector
The mountains / discriminations you may
face as a female, males, member of an
ethnic minority, disabled or someone with
learning needs (dyslexia / dyspraxia / ADHD
etc.)
Skills you will need in order to be
successful:
o time management
o presentation skills
o Organisation
o Creativity
o Role skills (editing, design, writing etc.)
o Software products / equipment you should be able to use
o the way you carry yourself (tattoos, hair styles, fashion)

LO3: Be able to carry out roles and responsibilities.


How you organise yourself and meet deadlines and targets as well as a
consideration and professionalism in working with others.

This will be in the form of peer observation, teacher


observation and self-evaluation
You will need to provide:

A reference from a peer (who you have worked with on productions)


A reference from your teacher (1a: Sarah, 1b: James, 1c: Chris)
A reference from your job or work placement
A critical evaluation of yourself which focuses on the skills required
for your chosen career

Find work experience

You are now required to find a work placement you can apply
for. You have been given a set week off college in order to
participate in work placement. In order to pass this unit, you
must apply for at least 3 placements and have an offer accepted for at
least 1.
Upload at least THREE different work placement jobs you can realistically
apply to

You will now incorporate UNIT 7 into your job search by creating an
interactive portfolio and CV that you can keep adding to as you progress
through your education and career. Once this is designed you will
undertake a mock work placement interview
You will have a mock job interview for this placement and you will be
graded on:

your appearance
understanding of the skills required
understanding of the progression route within the sector
the struggles you may face in order to get to the top
Your CV / Portfolio you provide
