INTELLIGENCE AND DEEP INSIGHTS TO GUIDE INNOVATION SUMMIT

ABOUT THE EVENT

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D)

R&D INNOVATION EXCELLENCE - THE NEED FOR INTELLIGENCE AND DEEP INSIGHTS
Our second edition of the R&D Innovation Excellence Summit is dedicated to intelligence and deep insights. Intelligence and deep
insights are fundamental requirements to guide innovation as well as R&D. Without gathering information about the changes
in the external world and without making sense of these organizations are unable to respond with innovations that excite customers
and maintain their competitive advantage. Thus, intelligence and insight enable organizations to develop future foresight,
to stay ahead through agility and innovativeness in a highly uncertain and volatile world.
BIG-DATA AND HUMAN-CENTRIC APPROACHES
An increasing number of innovative companies are embracing two different, but complementary approaches to intelligence and insight.

One approach is about the automated gathering and machine-assisted mining of big data. Foresight and future scenarios are
increasingly augmented by intelligence stemming from big-data mining

The other approach is about close observation of how people engage with products and solutions and how they feel about it

as consumers, patients or citizens. Deep innovation insights can come from empathic engagement and close observation
which allows the identification of underlying patterns. Design Thinking relies on this approach in combination with iterative
prototyping.

By using and eventually combining both approaches - the digital and the human-centric - companies maximize their chances for
innovations success

3 DAYS SUMMIT WITH DEDICATED FOCUS

Following this logic each of the 3 days of our summit have a distinct, yet complementary focus:

Day 1 is dedicated to intelligence and foresight where big data plays an increasing role
Day 2 is focused on human-centric innovation, deep insight and design thinking
Day 3 offers two parallel masterclasses on big-data driven intelligence and human-centric innovation

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN OUR SUMMIT

Be inspired about what is possible This summit will offer a unique opportunity to be inspired by key experts in big-data driven insights
as well as human-centric innovation. World leading companies and will share their experiences and cases in utilizing these approaches,
complemented by the thorough perspective of leading academics and the client-experience of fast growing service providers in these
disciplines. Engage in our interactive future factories and design cafes We will have interactive sessions which offer our participants
the opportunity to share and explore their topic of choice with other delegates. On day 1 our insight circles are the place to network
around insight, foresight and big data. On day 2 the design circles allow you to vet your perspectives on design thinking
and human-centric innovation.

BY ATTENDING YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT

INTELLIGENCE AND DEEP INSIGHTS TO GUIDE INNOVATION SUMMIT

29TH - 31 st 2017

ABOUT THE EVENT

Note from the chair

In numerous discussions with my friends and peers we always keep reverting to the same key
question: How can organizations accelerate innovation, R&D and strategizing through better
insights and intelligence?
The situation that many companies face today is that it becomes ever harder to direct strategic
innovation in the VUCA-world. VUCA stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity
a term first coined by the US military to describe the realities that defense organizations meet
in modern crisis and conflict environments. While defense organizations have learned their lessons
from dealing with VUCA-realities, it seems that many companies are still on a learning curve and
ask themselves about the best ways to develop stronger insight and intelligence capabilities:

How to get faster and more consistently from intelligence to strategic or operational pictures?
How to make foresight and scenario planning an integrated and continuously ongoing part
of strategy and innovation?
How to mine and to make sense of the enormous amounts of data available on web-based
resources?
How to gain deep insights into what customers, consumers, users, patients really
do with companies products and solutions -and what they really care about?
How to turn insights and new clarity into action - such as co-creating new prototypes,
value propositions, business models as well as new cooperations coalitions?

From a technical perspective we see fast progress in the machine-driven data mining, information
aggregation and visualization. Also, the capabilities for cognitive computing and artificial
intelligence are increasing. Likewise we witness that more and more companies recognize
human-centric and customer-centric innovation as crucial because it allows them to understand
what people really want.
One could argue that working with big and unstructured is a hard technological skill while
human-centric innovation is a soft anthropological skill. However, both approaches are even
stronger when combined. Also, both approaches need sense-making as a critical skill to turn data
and observation into insights - and furthermore, organisations need to master how to get from
insights to action on a strategic and/or operational level, continuously and consistently.
Conclusively, insight & intelligence cannot stand isolated but need to be integrated into leadership
practices which embraces a volatile presence and an uncertain future.
I welcome you to this first summit on insights and intelligence and look forward to be inspired
and network with you!
See you in Amsterdam,
