Just as the night sky can fill us with wonder and awe, so too this history
of those who came to see Jesus can fill us with the wonder and awe at the
Love of God come to be part of our life. This is another piece of the
puzzle that is our faith, men who came to be part of the proof that Jesus is
our Messiah, the gifts they bring help us to understand that Jesus is both
human and divine.
Who are the 'wise men' in your life; who are the ones who point you to
Jesus? When I see stories of people fighting for their lives in other
countries, I am filled with awe at how they can withstand the pain of war.
They teach me that God is still with us because they have not given up
hope. Those who are willing to 'uproot' and struggle to find something
better for their families help me to want to be a better person. May we all
be willing to share our gifts that others may find who God is for us.

Childrens Offering
I remember being outside on our farm before bedtime and being able
to see the stars as they began to appear in the evening. There was always
the one that 'showed up' first in the night sky; then others would follow
until the sky was full of twinkling lights. As a child, and still even to this day
I marvel at the night sky as there are too many stars to even think about
knowing how many exist. When we think of Epiphany, one of the first
images that comes to mind is the star that was a guide for the wise men, the
kings, the magi. Scripture does not give their number as three, we arrive at
the number because of the mention of three gifts for the newborn, another
ancient tradition puts the number as high as twelve. One can also find
many discussions as to who these men really were who came to visit the
King of kings. We can be a little more specific about the gifts which point
to the child to whom the gifts are given. Gold is for the King, frankincense
points to the fact that this King is divine, and myrrh, which was used for
healing and to anoint the dying helps us see mortality.
