When the Concorde was retired in 2003, the flying public lost the option for
supersonic air travel. Colorado-based Boom Technology is looking to change
that. They are working on the design of a Mach 2.2, 45-seat airliner to enter
service next decade. With fifty years of improvements in aerodynamics,
materials, and propulsion since Concorde was designed, the Boom aircraft will
much more efficient, enabling airlines to offer a supersonic ticket for the same
price as subsonic business class. Richard Bransons Virgin Group has announced
their intent to buy the first 10 aircraft, and their Virgin Galactic division will
assist with development, manufacturing, and flight test. The team at Boom is
currently working on a 1/3-scale prototype, dubbed XB-1, that will fly at the
end of this year. A mockup of the prototype was unveiled to the public in
November, and will be on display for this program. Booms Chief Engineer, Joe
Wilding, will talk about the development of XB-1 and the vision for the
production aircraft.
