ofRussianearlywarningradar,providinglongdistance
monitoringofairspaceagainstballisticmissileattackandaircraft
monitoring.Thefirstradar,inLekhtusinearStPetersburg,
becameoperationalin2009.Thereisaplantoreplaceolder
radarswiththeVoronezhby2020.[5]
Voronezh
TheircommonnamefollowsthepatternofSovietradarsinbeing
namedafterariver,theVoronezh.Thepreviousgenerationof
radarwasknownastheDaryal(afterDarialGorge),Volga(after
VolgaRiver)andDaugava(DaugavaRiver)andthegeneration
beforetheDnepr(DnieperRiver),andDnestr(DniesterRiver).

TheVoronezhradarsaredescribedashighlyprefabricated
meaningthattheyhaveasetuptimeofmonthsratherthanyears
andneedfewerpersonnelthanpreviousgenerations.Theyare
alsomodularsothataradarcanbebroughtinto(partial)
operationwhilstbeingincomplete.[6]

Thefirstradar,aVoronezhM,wasbuiltinLekhtusinearStPetersburg.
Itenteredtestingin2005andwasdeclared"combatready"in2012.[17]
ItisadjacenttotheA.MozhayskyMilitarySpaceAcademy,whichis
anofficertrainingcentrefortheAerospaceDefenceForces.[18]Itis
describedasfillingtheearlywarninggapcausedbytheclosureofthe
radarstationatSkrundainLatviain1998,[19]althoughtheVolgaradar
inHantsavichy,Belarus,hasalsobeendescribedasdoingthis,andasa
UHFradartheVolgahasadifferentresolutionfromtheVHFVoronezh
M.

ThesecondradarisatArmavirinsouthernRussiaonthesiteof
BaronovskyAirfield.ItisaVoronezhDM,aUHFradarandwas
announcedasreplacingthecoveragelostwhentheDnestrradarsin
SevastopolandMukachevo,Ukraine,wereclosedin2009.Thereare
actuallytworadarsatthissite,thefirstonecoversthesouthwestandcouldreplacetheUkrainianradars.[20]The
secondonefacingsoutheastandcouldreplacetheDaryalradarinGabalathatclosedattheendof2012.[21][22]
ThethirdradaristothesouthofPionerskyinKaliningrad,onthesiteofDunayevkaairfield.ItisanotherUHF
VoronezhDMandissurroundedbycountriesthatarenowinNATO.Thereisonlyoneradarhereanditisfully
operationalin2014.[23][24]
AradarwasbuiltatMishelevkainIrkutskonthesiteoftheformer,andneveroperational,Daryalradarwhichwas
demolishedin2011.[25]TheradarisaVoronezhVPandissitedclosetotheformerDaryaltransmitterbuilding.[26]
ThisradarcoversthesouthandcanreplaceoneofthetwoDneprradarsatthatsite.AnotherVoronezhVParraywas
plannedwhichgives240degreescoverage[27]andthisisreadyby2014.[13][28]
ItisplannedtobuildaVoronezhVPradaratPechorain2015toreplacetheDaryalthere.SimilarlyaVoronezhVPis
plannedforOlenegorskin2017toreplacetheDnepr/Daugava.[29]Aspartofthepublicnegotiationsoverthefutureof
GabalaRadarStationithadbeensuggestedthattheDaryaltherecouldbereplacedbyaVoronezhVPin2017,
althoughthestationclosedattheendof2012instead.[13][14]
