St Euthymios the Great

St Euthymios came from the city of Melitene in Armenia, near the River Euphrates.
His parents, Paul and Dionysia, were pious Christians of noble birth. After
many years of marriage they remained childless, and in their sorrow they
entreated God to grant them offspring. Finally, they had a Vision and heard a
Voice saying: "Be of good cheer! God will grant you a son, who will bring Joy
to the Church."
As Divinely Promised, a son was born to them and they named him Euthymios
which is translated Good Cheer.
His father, Paul, Reposed soon after his birth, and his mother, Dionysia, faithfully
fulfilled her Sacred Vow by Dedicating him to God by giving him into the
Spiritual Care and Protection of her brother, Eudoxios, who was a Priest and
who ensured that he would receive the best education possible.
Eudoxios then presented the young boy to Bishop Eutroios of Melitene, who
accepted him with Love and seeing St Euthymios good behaviour and
dedication to his tasks, Bishop Eutroios immediately made him a Reader.
When he had reached a suitable age, St Euthymios was Tonsured as Monk and
later Ordained into the Holy Priesthood.
At the same time, St Euthymios was entrusted with the supervision of all the Holy
Monasteries in the region of Melitene, and he most often visited the Monastery
of St Polyeuctos.
During Great Lent St Euthymios withdrew into the wilderness, but the great
responsibility of supervising all the Monasteries weighed heavily upon the
Holy Ascetic, which conflicted with his desire for Stillness to such an extent that
he eventually departed from Melitene and travelled to Jerusalem, where he
spent much of his time venerating the Holy Shrines and churches, and visiting
the Holy Desert Fathers, whose Inspired Wisdom and Piety he greatly admired
and strove to imitate.
A solitary cell in the Tharan Lavra became vacant so, gaining permission from
the Abbot, he moved into it and earned his living by weaving baskets.
His closest neighbour was St Theoctistos who also lived in strict Asceticism, and
shared the same Holy Zeal for God and for Spiritual Struggles and each
strove to attain what the other desired.
These two Holy Ascetics had such Love for one another that they seemed to share
one soul and one will.
Every year, after the Feast of Theophany, they withdrew into the desert of Coutila
(not far from Jericho). One day, they entered a steep and terrifying gorge with
a stream running through it. They saw a cave upon a cliff, and settled there.
The Lord, however, soon revealed their solitary place for the Spiritual Benefit of
many others when Shepherds - driving their flocks before them - came upon
the cave and saw the two Monks. On their return to the village the Shepherds
told the people about having seen the two Holy Ascetics, and revealed their
exact location.
People seeking Spiritual Nourishment and Guidance, soon trod a clear pathway
to the isolated cave where St Euthymios and St Theoctistos had sought Solitude,
Contemplation and Asceticism. As the numbers of Pilgrims increased, a
Monastic Community gradually became established around them, and many
Monks from the Tharan Monastery also went to them, among whom were St
Marinos and St Luke.

OF

MELITNE, ARMENIA 19-20 JANUARY

St Euthymios entrusted the supervision of the growing Monastery to his friend, St

Theoktistos, while he exhorted the Faithful Brethren to constantly guard their
thought: "...Whoever desires to lead the Monastic Life should not follow his
own will. He should be Obedient and Humble, and be mindful of the Hour of
Death. He should Fear the Judgment and Eternal Fire, and seek the
Heavenly Kingdom."
St Euthymios taught the Novice and inexperienced Monks to always fix their
thoughts on God while engaging in physical labour: "...If laymen work in
order to feed themselves and their families, and to give alms and offer
sacrifice to God, then are not we as Monks obliged to work to sustain
ourselves and to avoid idleness? We should not depend on strangers!"
He demanded the Monks to remain silent in church during Services and at meals,
and when he saw young Monks Fasting more than others, he told them to cut
off their own will, and to follow the appointed Rule and times for Fasting. He
urged them not to attract attention to their Fasting, but to always eat in
moderation.
During those years St Euthymios Converted and Baptized many Arabs - among
whom were the Saracen leaders, Aspebet, and his son, Terebon, both of whom
St Euthymios had cured of severe illness. Aspebet received the name Peter in
Baptism and eventually became a Bishop of the Arabs.
Word spread quickly of the Miracles performed by St Euthymios. People from
everywhere sought Healing of their various ailments, but as he rejected all
fame and glory, St Euthymios quietly left the Monastery, taking only his closest
Disciple, St Dometian with him as he withdrew into the solitude of the Rouba
desert, until they found suitable shelter on Mount Marda, near the Dead Sea.
In his quest for Solitude, St Euthymios explored the wilderness of Ziph and
eventually settled in the cave where St David, the Royal Psalmist and
Shepherd, had once hidden from King Saul.
Once again, due to the Spiritual Needs of the Faithful, St Euthymios founded
another Holy Monastery beside St David's cave, and built a church.
During this time St Euthymios converted many Monks from the Manichean heresy,
Healed the sick and cast out demons from all those who sought his
Intercessory Prayers.
Howeer, the great and constant multitude of visitors and Pilgrims disturbed the
tranquillity of the wilderness, and because he preferred silence and solitude,
he decided to return to the Monastery of St Theoktistos, but along the way they
found a quiet level place on a hill, where he decided to remain, and which,
much later, become the site of St Euthymios' Lavra, while a small cave served
as his cell, and finally as his tomb.
St Theoktistos accompanied by a group of the Holy Brethren - went to St
Euthymios to beseech him to return to their Monastery, but the Holy Ascetic
gently refused, although he promised to attend Sunday Services at the
Monastery, which he did.
St Euthymios did not wish to have anyone nearby, nor did he want to organize a
Cenobium or a Lavra, but our Lord commanded him in a Vision not to drive
away those who came to him for the Salvation of their soul.
After some time, once again, Faithful Brethren gathered around him, and he
organized a Lavra, similar to the Tharan Lavra.
In 429, when St Euthymios was fifty-two years old, Patriarch Juvenal of Jerusalem
consecrated the Lavra church and supplied it with Presbyters and Deacons.
At first the Lavra was rather poor, but St Euthymios trusted completely that God
would provide for His Faithful servants and when 400 Armenians on their way
to the Jordan arrived at the Lavra, St Euthymios called the Steward and
ordered him to feed the Pilgrims.
The obviously appalled Steward reminded the Holy Ascetic Father that there was
not nearly enough food in the Monastery to feed the Brethren, let alone the

Pilgrims. St Euthymios, however, insisted. Despondently entering storeroom the

Steward was shocked to find a large quantity of bread, and even the wine
casks and oil jars were miraculously full!
The Pilgrims ate their fill, and for three months afterwards the door of the
storeroom could not be shut because of the abundace of bread. The food
remained undiminished, just like the widow of Zarephath's barrel of meal and
cruse of oil! (1/3 Kings 17:8-16)
One day a Monk named Auxentios refused to carry out his assigned Obedience,
and, despite St Euthymios having summoned him and urged him to comply,
he remained obstinate. In frustration, the Holy Ascetic shouted loudly: "You
will be rewarded for your insubordination!" And immediately a demon seized
Auxentios and threw him to the ground.
The frightened Brethren who had witnessed the entire episode, besought Father
Euthymios to help him, and he instantly Healed the unfortunate Auxentios, who
once he had fully recoverd, begged his Forgiveness and promised to correct
himself, whereupon St Euthymios commented: Obedience is a Great Virtue!
The Lord Loved Obedience more than sacrifice, but disobedience leads to
Death!
When two young Monks became overwhelmed by the austere Monastic Life in the
Monastery of St Euthymios, they resolved to flee.
However, St Euthymios saw in a Vision that they would be ensnared by the devil,
so he summoned them and admonished them to abandon their destructive
intention, telling them: "We must never admit evil thoughts that fill us with
sorrow and hatred for the place in which we live, and which suggests that
we go somewhere else.
If someone tries to do something good in the place where he lives but fails to
complete it, he should not think that he will accomplish it elsewhere.
It is not the place that produces success, but Faith and a firm will.
A tree that is often transplanted does not bear fruit."

and Activity as a Standard and
Excellent Model of Virtue for those
who desire to Worship God in
Perfection.
Thy
Divinely-Wise
Teaching, O Euthymios, taught all to
Worship the Trinity, that Christ is
known to be One in two Natures, and
that the Synods were equal in
number for Christs four Gospels.
Entreat Him to Save and Enlighten
our soul.
