In celebration of the English

Month, the Reading Department
by Raia Tomas & Angela Rebecca I. Flestado

holds annually a contest of reading

prowess and commanding stage
presence. All to promote literature
and challenge the students reading
and presentation skills, each level isl
enjoined to promote healthy
competition among its sections in
performing different Reading
presentation genres.
Last school year, the lower
graders conducted the Chamber
Theater; whereas, the Grades 4 and 5
both held the Reader's Theater
contest. For the upper graders,
levels 6 and 7, it was the Choral
Recitation. Celebrated literary texts
such as “The Boy Who Ate Stars” by
Alfred Yuson and “War and Peace” by
Sri Chinmoy were among the
presented pieces.
The Reader's Theater and
Choral Recitation contests promote
friendly competition among the
level’s classes wherein the students
showcase their unique take of the
pieces allowing them to demonstrate
their creativity and express
themselves artistically. Each section
is trained and guided by their
respective Reading teachers, who

Book Marathon by Lara Andrea R. Montales
AY 2008-2009 saw CSA held its first ever Book
Marathon Contest. A true test for the certified bookworm,
the marathon was held during each grade level's feast day
celebrations.
For each level an assortment of various book titles
23
were loaned to the chosen representatives of each section
competing against each other. This is to prepare them in
their battle of wits in book knowledge supremacy. Of
course, these contestants were self-proclaimed book
worms who joyfully volunteered to come out of their shell
and face this challenge in familiarity and comprehension of
the printed world.
With the questions divided into 3 categories of
easy, average and difficult rounds, the marathon was truly
interesting to behold - prompting each contestant's
supporters to cheer wildly and applaud victoriously
everytime a correct answer is validated.
The Book Marathon is part of CSA's English Month
celebration which generally aims to encourage the
students' love for reading books and to enhance their
reading skills.

24 Area Contests by Lara Andrea R. Montales

Stock knowledge, smarts and a quick hand are what competing

students need to win top prize in the Math and AP area contests. A skilled
hand and a critiquing eye are the assets of one who joins the Art area
contests. And for the Language and Reading areas - an impeccable memory
along with an effective and expressive voice topped with tremendous
amount of self confidence and self-control bring home the bacon.
Year in and year out, Colegio San Agustin has taken pride in its series
of scheduled area contests held respectively on the assigned month wherein
these subjects are focused on.
Of course, aside from the fact that it tempers the knowledge and
experience of each Augustinian competitor, the area contests also teach us
the value of sportsmanship. Here, we learn that we cannot win all the time.
Moreover, it also teaches us the wisdom of maintaining one's wits
about him in times of extreme pressure. Here, we learn how to think quickly.
Oral or written, we have to come up with the correct answer before time runs
out. Surprisingly, 'though, it is the forging of camaraderie amidst competition
that gives the most value to these area contests. Here, students competing
against each other actually share a common experience, interacting on the
plane of their common interests.
Truly, the CSA Area Contests is a battlefield of born winners, honing
and forging their craft, eagerly awaiting their chance to represent their Alma
Mater against national or even international competitions – an Augustinian
legacy to be truly proud of!

25 Library Contests
The CSA Library and its dynamic staff are among those who tirelessly
work to promote the love for reading during the Book Month celebrations.
Through the years, they have thought of a myriad of stimulating and
appropriate contest activities for each grade level to entice active participation
and hearten awareness of the goals and aims of the month long celebration.
These Grade Level Contests were conducted in the classroom under the effective
guidance of CSA's vibrant Reading Coordinator, Mrs. Maxima B. Hadarly, along with her
multitalented Reading teachers.
As in any other Augustinian endeavor, the students' output in each Grade Level Contest is
simply outstanding – a true example of Augustinian marksmanship. As practiced, selected
Reading Teachers were chosen to judge the different contest entries from Grades 1-7.

26 Ecological Concerns
Tetra-Pak Campaign by Lara Andrea R. Montales
Tables, chairs, paperweights
and picture frames. Almost anything
you want can be made from tetra paks.
The light packages, in which we hold
liquids such as juice, cream, and milk are
recycled and remolded into useful,
everyday objects.
Tetra paks are made of
materials that are both environment-
friendly and healthy. The paperboard,
which looks like a cardboard, supports
the tetra pak. To block germs that contaminate the contents,
tetra paks contain chemicals used in plastic bags and
containers. The foil stops the air and sunlight from coming in
so that the matter will not spoil easily.
Though we recognize the significance of tetra paks
in packaging our processed foods, too much production might
also add up to the clutter in our environment. Fortunately, in
previous years, twenty billion tetra paks were recycled. It
means that a lot of trash was lessened, and a lot of furniture
was made without hurting our planet. The trees, usually
needed to make those fixtures, were spared. The tetra pak,

Imagine people on the streets
begging you for food and alms. Imagine
them wearing torn and worn-out clothes.
These people are just some of the images
of the poor people in our society. Their
future 'though, may well be changed by
truly simple acts of charity welded
together in the CSA Outreach Programs.
The CSA Outreach Program, which
includes the Pondo ng Pinoy, Newspaper
Fund Drive and the Tetra-pak and Plastic
Bottle campaigns, aims to carry out
charity works for those who are in need.
Through this program, the whole
Augustinian family - comprised of its
personnel, its students and their families -
are able to fulfill their social responsibility
through charitable works, anonymously
or otherwise. The Outreach Program
offers the basic material necessities such
as clothes, school supplies, and food to
some chosen underprivileged members of
society, all dispensed via a warm,
meaningful and memorable interaction
between the young Augustinians and their
favored recipients.
To date, the CSA Outreach Program
has “leveled up” to committing to build at
least 60 simple houses for an indigent
community in Taguig through the Gawad
Kalinga project. This tie up between CSA
and GK (CSA-GK Project) was inspired by
the school's 40th Founding Anniversary
Celebration. In time, CSA hopes to realize
its commitment to this CSA-GK mission, in
hopes of contributing to this noble fight
against poverty and indifference.
