Geometric Transformations Definitions Sheet

**First, write your name on the top of this paper. Then, look these up on your own device. Make sure
to look up the geometric definitions (ex: geometric definition of rigid motion thats what you
google search). This is due by the end of class NO EXCEPTIONS!**
1. Coordinate Plane:
2. Transformation:

3. Pre-Image:
4. Image:
5. Rigid Motion:
6. Translation:

7. Reflection:
8. Line of reflection:

9. Rotation:
10. Degree of rotation:

11. Dilation:

In your own words answer the following questions:

1. What is a simple word we can use instead of translate?
2. What is a simple word we can use instead of rotate?
3. What is a simple word we can use instead of reflect?
4. Draw a sketch of a coordinate plane:
5. Name the 3 rigid motion transformations:
6. Which one isnt a rigid motion transformation?

7. Here is an example of translating (moving) a figure 11 units to the right on a coordinate plane:

8. Notice the coordinates of my pre-image (the original) are A(-8,9), B(-4,7), C(-4,4), D(-8,2)
9. The coordinates of my image (the new figure) are A(3,9), B(7,7), C(7,4), D(3,2). ** take notice
that since we moved it TO THE RIGHT, ONLY THE X COORDINATES CHANGE. When we move a
figure left or right, the X-COORIDNATE changes that many. If we move a figure UP OR DOWN,
the Y-COORDINATE changes by that many!!
10. Now do your own translation:

11. First, what are the 3 coordinates of EFG? E(2,-3), F______________, G____________
12. Now translate the triangle EFG 8 units up on the coordinate plane.
13. What are the coordinates of the image of EFG? (the new coordinates)?
