Course Tools (Required)

General Chemistry, Principles and Modern Applications, (Petrucci, Herring, Madura and
Bissonette), Custom Edition for IIT. (You may also buy the normal version of this textbook online; it will have all 23 chapters, and they will be in a different order, but if you buy a 9th
edition (which is fine) you can probably buy it very inexpensively.)
An iPad, smartphone, or laptop will be used for in-class quizzes and exercises. Please contact
me if you dont have any of these available to you, and we will make alternate arrangements.
Sapling Learning Account (www.saplinglearning.com) Purchase an access code through the
bookstore or pay on-line; directions are found at the end of this syllabus.
Calculator, pencil, paper. You will frequently be working on problems in lecture, so please
bring your calculator to all lectures.

Course Objectives

1. Recognize the steps of scientific method.

2. Relate different types of measurements to the quantifying principles of chemistry.
3. Describe the structure of matter on atomic and molecular levels and correlate structure to chemical
and physical properties.
4. Employ chemical nomenclature to describe matter and its reactions.
5. Identify types of chemical reactions.
6. Characterize the differences in the states of matter and the unique properties associated with each.
7. Describe and quantify the energetics of chemical reactions.
Objectives for each chapter are found on the Sapling Learning website.

Grading While point totals cannot be translated exactly into

letter grades until all grades are in, the cut-off points
for grades will approximately follow a scale of 90
(A), 80 (B), 70 (C), 60 (D), 50 (E).

Extra Credit Up to 3% extra credit will be given for completion of an Everyday Chemistry Video. Details
will be available on the course website.
Examinations There will be total of four examinations Please note that exams are given outside of the
normally scheduled class time, in the evenings. This is done as there are 5 sections of general chemistry,
and we use a common exam.

Quizzes
There will be 2 types of quizzes:
Prep-quizzes (daily, 5pts each, 2.5%)
Purpose: To encourage you to keep up with course material and come to class prepared.
Content: Straightforward material from the previous class or new material listed on the course
website under What to Know Before you Come to Class.
Format: Administered using Web-Clicker
Cumulative quizzes (3x/semester, see schedule for dates, 25pts each, 7.5%)
Purpose: To assess your progress between hourly exams, and to provide practice for the mid-term
exams.
Content: Material covered since the previous exam.
Format: Pencil and paper; combination of multiple choice questions, short essays, and problemsolving.
You will be able to drop 5 prep-quizzes.
Make-up quizzes will not be offered. In the case of excused absences (which require a doctors excuse)
grades will be calculated using an average of the other quiz scores.
Problem Sets
While some of chemistry requires memorizing new material, most of chemistry is about solving problems. The
only way to learn to solve problems is to work lots of problems. This is crucial to your success in chemistry! All
problem sets are completed on-line using Sapling Learning. (www.saplinglearning.com)
There will be two problem sets available to you for each chapter. One set is required; hints will be available after
your first try, but solutions will not be available until you submit your answers. You can try the problems as many
times as you like, but you lose 2% of the credit with each attempt. The required problems represent a minimum
number of problems that you should work working more is better! Problem Sets will generally be due a day or
two after the final lecture for that chapter, but you should be working on them before that, so that you have the
opportunity to ask questions in class! Although you will turn in your answers on-line, you should complete your
homework in a notebook. I will want to see it when you come to office hours with questions (so that we can figure
out where you are having trouble) and it will be a useful study tool.
A second problem set will be provided solely for your practice, and is not required. However, if you miss the due
date for (or do poorly on) the required problem set, you may complete the practice problem set for 85% of the
possible points for that chapter. There will be no further extensions available for problem sets.
Your lowest problem set grade will be dropped.
If you have technical or grading questions with the problem sets, please send an email to
support@saplinglearning.com. I have found them to be very helpful and they will generally get back to you within
24 hours.

Exam & Grade Assignment Rules

1. Students must attend the final exam or they will be given a grade of E for the course (fail the course).
Those who have a University recognized excuse will be given an incomplete (I) grade, which will be
changed to a failing grade (E) if they dont complete the final exam before the deadline set by the university.
Please consult the student handbook and your advisor regarding this matter.
2. Students in 124 must complete at least 85% of the lab experiments (including lab reports. Students who do
not complete a sufficient number of the labs will be given a failing grade (E) for the whole course.

Students with Disabilities

Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with documented disabilities. In order to
receive accommodations, students must obtain a letter of accommodation from the Center for
Disability Resources. The Center for Disability Resources (CDR) is located at 3424 S. State Street,
room 1C3-2, telephone 312-567-5744 or disabilities@iit.edu.
Academic Honesty
The highest integrity is expected at all times from IIT students. Any violations of the Academic Code
will be subject to Academic Discipline. A first offense will result in a failing grade on the quiz or
exam. A second offense will result in failing the class. All offenses will be written up and reported to
the Academic Honesty Committee.
