General Tips: Tests are largely based on lecture material
Attend class and take detailed notes
Solve lots of practice problems on your own
Read chapters for clarification
Scientific Method:
1. Find a problem to solve
2. Collect data through experiment or observation
3. Hypothesis:
4. Law:
5. Theory: hypothesis that is tested repeatedly and not disproven
Definitions
chemistry: study of
energy:
matter: has
, occupies
types of pure substances:

Draw a diagram:

and the changes it undergoes

types of mixtures:

mass = how much

something has
weight = how strongly the force of gravity pulls on an object
chemical property =
physical property =
intensive property =
extensive property =
accuracy = how close result is to actual answer (calculated by percent error)
precision = how reproducible the results are, or how close the results are to each other
Naming
Know ALL of the elements and groups on the handout posted to blackboard!!

Significant Figures: tells how exact a measurement is
For measurements: all non-zero digits, 0s b/w other digits, trailing 0s WITH decimal point
NOT leading zeroes
trailing zeroes are ambiguous with no decimal point (2000 vs. 2000.0)
Definitions have an infinite number of sig figs within metric and imperial system, time
(Remember to put calculator in scientific notation for the tests)
* exact definitions: 2.54cm = 1in
1mL = 1cm3
Temperature Conversions: F = (C)(9/5) + 32, C = (F 32)(5/9), K = (C) + 273.15
Practice
1. How many sig figs?
a. 92.30 _____
b. 60700 _____

c. 0.00015 ______
d. 4.035
______

2. Solve for the correct number of sig figs

a. 100.0 + 23.643 _________
b. 52.79 21.4
_________
3. Round:
a. 5.6798 to 4 sig figs

c. 6089.4 to 2 sig figs

4. Convert:
a. 0.010 kg to g

b. 60.00 mi/hr to m/s

c. 0.030 * 12.60 _________

d. 2100.0 / 15.0 _________

(1 mi = 1.609 km)

c. 12.0 m3 to L

d. 16.0C to Fahrenheit

e. 125F to Celsius to Kelvin

f. Volume of 5.42 lbs of ethanol in L
