See How
Much the
"Perfect"
Female Body
Has Changed
in 100 Years.

The exaggerated curves of Gibson are

gone and replaced with small bust and
hips.
Following the stock market crash,
spirits dip back down and so do
hemlines. Dresses are now draped on
the bias. Translation? A less boxy,
more fitted silhouette. The natural
waist (around the belly button) comes
back and theres a hint of shoulder too.
And the flat-chested look so popular in
the 1920s gives way to a small
bustline, likely a direct result of the
new bra-cup sizing invented in this era.
The media embraces a slightly more
curvaceous body, making this era a
stepping-stone from the streamlined,
petite look of the 1920s toward the
curvier 1940s.
Thanks to World War II, military
shoulders(broad, boxy, and aggressive)
become the look du jour.

The medias concept of

the ideal womans body
isnt static. Whoever
People magazine deems
most beautiful this year
is just a representation of
what has bubbled up in
the cauldron of pop
culture. That silhouette of
the ideal woman has
been put through a series
of funhouse mirrors
(fashion, movies, pop
music, politics). It also
changes year over year, so
the physical qualities we
embrace today are often at
odds with those from
previous generations.
Beauty trends are
subjective and fleeting

Playboy magazine and
Barbie were both created
in this decade, echoing a
tiny-waisted, largechested ideal. Fashions
also showcased this body
type with the rounded
shapes of sweetheart
necklines and circle
skirts.

The swinging 60s brings

the pendulum back in the
other direction. Thin is in.
Its the same dramatic
swing we saw from
Gibson girl to flapper.
This decade was a raging
party. But the party girl of
the day was still pressured
to maintain a slim-hipped,
flat-stomached body in
order to rock these
fashions at the
discotheque.
Gone is the pale, gaunt,
glassy-eyed look of the
90s. Now we enter an era
of visible abs and
airbrushed tans.
Synthetic fabrics like
polyester and spandex are
embraced, but theyre also
far more revealing and
less forgiving compared to
fabrics of the past.
These tall, leggy women
come to represent the new
feminine ideal.

The cuban missile crisis

started in 9162, and the
New York Worlds Fair
opened in 1964. Also in
1964, discrimination
became illegal. The
Vietnam war had a very
big effect on trends and
how people thought of
wars. The Vietnam war
ended in 1975, and during
the whole war, women's
trends changed drastically.
The new fashions introduced
therefore had a greater impact on
society, affecting not only royalty and
aristocrats, but also middle and even
lower classes.
The rise of Louis XIV, the Sun King,
and his court at Versailles, signaled the
dawn of the Classical Baroque era in
art, architecture, music, and fashion. It
was defined by natural, curving
silhouettes, flowing lines, gold filigree,
rich colors, and overall
voluptuousness. Clothing contained an
abundance of lace, pearls, ribbons, and
gold embroidery, and was refreshingly
free from the excessive decoration of
the Renaissance. Fashion changed
rapidly: the growing middle class
would copy the styles of the nobles,
who would in turn create new fashions
to stay more refined than the middle
class

Louis XVI), practically

outer clothing was cut in
slits and the underclothing
slightly pulled through,
the ruff, a circular collar

fabric (these continued to
get larger and more
elaborate as the era
progressed), and

a new silhouette for

women was developing.
Panniers, or wide hoops
worn under the skirt that
extended sideways,
became a staple.
Extremely wide panniers
were worn to formal
occasions, while smaller
ones were worn in
everyday settings. Waists
were tightly constricted by
corsets, provided contrasts
to the wide skirts.
Plunging necklines also
became common. Skirts
usually opened at the
front, displaying an
underskirt or petticoat.

A Timeline
of Beauty
Defined
throughout
the Ages

(1400s-1600s)
women were prized for their natural
bodies
(20s)
The loose silhouette of the flapper
dress was in stark contrast to the
corseted waist of the Victorian era.
Elastic webbed girdles replaced corsets
and gave off the look of a flat boyish
abdomen.
(30s-50s)
As they became more body conscious,
women started to pay attention to what
they ate. Fashions accented the arms
and legs, so women lifted light weights
to build muscle tone. The new padded
stretch cotton bra was introduced

How and
Why has
fashion
changed over
the last 50
years

Think about how the mini-skirt

became popular in the 1960s; this
reflected the fact that attitudes toward
sex and the female body were changing
and becoming more liberal.

I firmly believe that the

way fashion changes is
indicative of how a
society or culture changes
and evolves. Think about
how the mini-skirt became
popular in the 1960s;
this reflected the fact that
attitudes toward sex and
the female body were
changing and becoming
more liberal. So in this
sense I believe our
clothing and style changes
as we change, as
technology becomes more
advanced, and as our
attitudes change as a
society. World events and
trends also inspire the
clothes we wear in the
1970s, the hippy
movement certainly
sparked a fashion style.
