MTS High Cycle Fatigue Machine Upgrades Specifications

NASA intends to purchase a laser high heat flux multi-axis flexural-tension

(compression) Servohydraulic Material Testing System (11kip) for advanced ceramic
matrix composite (CMC) and coating material systems testing and developments.
The advanced test machine system upgrades shall include a state of the art, flexible
digital servo- controlled multipurpose test frame MTS 322 series, and shall have a Tslotted base table assembly (28 in W x 80 in L). The base table shall have an
integrated, Table mount 11kip 6 in stroke actuator for generating +/- Z axis flexure
loading. The test rig shall also include two 180 degree opposed horizontal 5.5kip
actuators for generating Tension/compression axial loading, as shown in the Figure
below.

(compression) Servohydraulic Material Testing System. (a) Side view; (b) Front view.
The system general attributes shall include the following:

Hydraulically-powered lifts for smooth crosshead repositioning

Automated hydraulic locks for operator convenience
Load cell attachment kit for table, crosshead and piston rod installation
Low-velocity actuation mode for safer loading of specimens

The Multixial Servohydraulic Test Systems shall have the versatility to perform
various ceramic matrix composite component testing. Samples or subelements
placement options shall be provided for actuators and load cells, for some turbine
hot section component size and unique fixturing requirements, and for various
flexural-tension (compression) loading configurations.
1

The multi-axial test frame rig shall be expected to be controlled a NASA existing
integrated PC with FlexTest 40 3-channel multi-axis controller and Software for main
controls to achieve various test mission profiles and in various test configurations. A
remote control unit and advanced multi function and multi-purpose Test software
shall also be able to allow controls in the laser high heat flux test cell away from the
control room with the main PC controls.
The multi-axial test frame rig shall also be integrated to a NASA existing advanced,
high performance SilentFlo Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU).
The multi-axial test frame rig shall include one (1) MTS 244.21-05C Actuator (Table
mounted) with the dynamic force rating of 50 kN (11.0 kip); stroke length of 150
mm (6 in), and MTS Model 298.12 Hydraulic Service Manifold (HSM) with dual
252.2x servovalve ports. Full stroke, co-axially mounted displacement transducer,
along with 1 L (1 qt) accumulation on pressure and return shall be integrated. The
load Columns and crosshead shall be positioned in the center of the frame for NASA
specified multi-axial component testing. The Load Frame Height shall be
approximately 2.48 m (98 in), allowing minimum 31.2 mm (1.23 in) and maximum
1260 mm (50 in) Vertical Test Space.
The multi-axial test frame rig shall include MTS 252.24G-04 servovalve for this axis
loading frame.
The multi-axial test frame rig shall include MTS 244.12-05 Actuators family, and 252
series servovalve manifold for additional axis loading capability.
The multi-axial test frame rig shall include MTS 661.20E-02, 11kip load cell, and a
5.5kip Piston rod mounted Load Cell.
The multi-axial test frame rig shall include MTS 647.02B Hydraulic Wedge grips and
Grip wedges (force capacity 5.5 kip).
The multi-axial test frame rig shall include MTS 293.11 Hydraulic Service Manifold
(HSM; flow capability 189 lpm or 50 gpm maximum per station; pressure 21 MPa or
3000psi operation; 3 station option shall be included). Accumulator kit, check
valves, filters, and water cooling kit shall be included for MTS 293.11 HSM and the
system.
The multi-axial test frame rig purchase shall include factory calibrations for key
displacement and force (load) transducers.
The multi-axial test frame rig purchase shall include the installation of the test
frame and rig systems, and integration operations with the existing FlexTest 40
controller and Hydraulic Power Unit, and shall meet NASA component test
specifications.
2

The multi-axial test frame rig purchase shall include all the cables, cable
assemblies, and connectors.
The multi-axial test frame rig purchase shall include necessary operator training.
An initial set of spare parts associated with the Hydraulic systems and some system
maintenance requirements shall also be provided.
