Area schools try to navigate their way to success

Everybody needs a road map at some

point in his or her life, especially if
theyre going somewhere new.
Sure, they have evolved from the paper kind we used when we were growing
up to the applications on smart phones
that not only give you step-by-step instructions of how to get to your destination, but also traffic data and an estimated time of arrival. It all stems from a
desire to move from a starting point to a
destination.
In sports, its
no different,
and you better
believe the area
high school
football teams MATT
||
have mapped WAGNER
out their roads to success since the end
of last season.
Those roads could put them in unfamiliar territory, such as the Conneaut
Spartans, who for seven years went
without having a conference affiliation.
The school district changed that in the
offseason by crossing the state border
and going where no Ohio school has
ever gone before Pennsylvanias District 10.
This move will not only give the Spartans a chance to compete for a league
title, but also play against schools their
size at least by Keystone State standards. The 3A classification in Pennsylvania is the equivalent to anywhere
from Division III to Division V in Ohio,
and should they do well enough against
those schools, the Spartans will hope to
return to the promised land of the playoffs for the first time since 1985.
Grand Valley, meanwhile, will be trying
to travel the exact same roads of the
previous season, which could prove to
be more treacherous than during the
Mustangs historic 2015 campaign that
saw Orwell host its first-ever playoff
game.
The Mustangs biggest obstacle might
not be navigating the Northeastern Athletic Conference slate (even though all
league teams will be coming after them,
including rival Pymatuning Valley), but

instead the defending Division VI state

champion Kirtland Hornets, whose 56game regular-season winning streak GV
snapped in Week 2.
Other schools, such as Edgewood,
Jefferson and Lakeside, will hit the
route south on State Route 11 and play
against the Mahoning Valleys finest in
the All-American Conference. For Edgewood and Lakeside, its all about bouncing back after rough seasons, while for
Jefferson, its about finally getting over
the hump and into the playoffs.
All three schools must go through a
gauntlet in order to get to their respective goals. In Lakesides case, thats
three playoff teams in Austintown Fitch
(Division I), Boardman (Division II) and
Warren G. Harding (Division II) in the
Gold Tier. In Edgewoods and Jeffersons
cases, it involves trying to get past traditional powerhouses Poland, Hubbard
and Lakeview of the White Tier.
Speaking of a gauntlet, the Madison
Blue Streaks entered the newest version
of the Western Reserve Conference
knowing full well it was going to test
them. They handled their first season
well by winning the league title, but after
losing 22 players to graduation, the Blue
Streaks will have their hands full trying
to defend that title against Chardon,
Mayfield and others.
Like Madison, Geneva will venture
west toward Cleveland in its quest to
continue to improve under coach Chip
Sorber. The Eagles recorded one more
win last fall than in 2014, but Sorber has
his sights set on even higher goals.
Not overlooking the St. John Heralds,
who themselves made history last year
by recording their first win since rejoining the OHSAA. They have decided to go
on paths better known, though, playing
against county programs like Edgewood
and PV instead of the more-than-twohour bus rides to Steubenville and New
Philadelphia.
No matter which road the schools
take, they will have their instructions
on how to arrive at their destination. All
thats left is whether or not the teams
make it to that goal.

KEY GAME
Week 4: vs. Mercyhurst Prep
Conneaut will line up for its first
league game since the 2008 season
when it hosts Mercyhurst Prep on
Homecoming. It will be the Spartans first taste of District 10.

Conneaut joins District 10 to play in a league for first time since 2008
BY MATT WAGNER
mwagner@starbeacon.com

CONNEAUT After seven

years in the wilderness, the
Conneaut Spartans have
more for which to play outside of trying to make the
playoffs.
Conneaut hasnt contended for a conference
championship since the old
Northeastern Conference
folded after the 2008-2009
academic year. Ever since,
the Spartans have been an
independent, scheduling
whomever they can in hopes
of ending a postseason
drought that hit 30 years
last fall.
Following years of trying
to join a league, Conneaut
has finally found one

across the border in Pennsylvania. The Spartans have

joined District 10, where
they will play in Region 4.
This has created a different buzz for the team this
season.
I think its a great thing
for the team, especially the
kids, Conneaut coach Rocco Dobran said. They have
something to play for, thats
the biggest thing, and since
Ive been here, the only
thing we have to play for is
the playoffs, which we havent made since 1985. Not
that thats still not a goal
that we want to achieve and
get there, but now they have
a conference championship
also to play for.
The biggest issue the Spartans face when it comes to

this new conference is that

they have little knowledge
about the other teams in the
conference.
Dobran said hes only seen
a little bit of film online of
the squads, but he expects
all of them to be very competitive. Whether its last
years champion, Fairview,
with six starters on offense
and nine on defense coming
back or Titusville and Mercyhurst Prep, both of which
went winless in the conference, Dobran said the league
we will be tough.
Theyre competitive, and
the teams that were down
last year seems like theyre
moving up and working
hard to get to where they
need to be, Dobran said. A
couple of those teams have

new coaches so theyre trying to turn their programs

around, and the teams that
have been successful Im
sure are going to continue
to be successful and do real
well.

QUATERBACKS

Leading Conneaut into

District 10 will be senior
Tysen Hunt.
The quarterback was the
main man last
year until he
suffered a season-ending knee
Hunt
injury against
Edgewood in Week 8. Prior
to that, Hunt was having
quite the season, tossing the
ball for 1,009 yards and 12
touchdowns with a comple-

tion percent of 50 percent.

He also added another 276
yards on the ground.
Dobran said Hunt has
completely recovered from
the injury and even looks
stronger than he was before
the injury.
His knee looks stronger,
Dobran said. Hes squatting
more than anybody else on
the team, more than any of
our linemen. Hes coming
off a knee injury, and hes
squatting over four plates.
So, I think hes pretty much
healed up there.
Should anything happen
to Hunt, the Spartans have
a good backup plan in Alex
Rivera. The senior stepped
in for Hunt during the last

to be the main backup, but he wont be

available until halfway
through the season,
though, because he
broke his foot on the
first day of hitting.

RECEIVERS

One of the biggest

question marks for
Conneaut heading into
this season comes at
the receiver position.
The Spartans top
four receivers from
2015 graduated, including Alex Gerdes
and his 23.1-yards-percatch average. In steps
Jon West and P.J. Matthews, while Rivera will
start in the slot whenever hes not spelling
Sturgill at tailback.

The Spartans will

be adding a tight end
for the first time this
season since Dobran
took over. The player
deployed there will be
Alan Christine, a 6-1,
235-pound junior who
played at H-back last
year.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Dobran described
the unit
as quicker
than the
Spartans
have had
in previous years,
led by two
Drew
seniors in
center Nick Drew and
guard Chance Woodworth.

Joining them in the

starting lineup are
three juniors. Tanner
Kapen will be starting
at left tackle, Nathan
Eaton at the other
guard spot and Jake
Daub at right tackle. Daub rotated in
at guard during his
freshman season, but
he missed last season
with a shoulder injury.
Those three juniors
are very impressive
guys because theyre
all athletic linemen,
Dobran said. Theyre
not oversized by any
means theyre just
big, strong, athletic-type linemen, and
we havent had a lot
of that since Ive been
here.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Dobran said he
believes the strongest
unit on defense will be
the line.
The Spartans have
at least
five players
available
for the
three spots
in the 3-4
Christine
defense,
led by Christine, who
recorded two sacks
and six tackles for a

loss in 2015. Kapen

will give Christine rest
at times.
Sophomore Johnny
Moneypenny will play
at nose guard, with
Dobran saying he just
doesnt quit. Daub
and Nathan Eaton will
rotate at the 3-tech to
round out the defensive line.
I think its going to be one of our
strengths, Dobran
said. I think were two
deep, where guys can
rotate in, and we really
feel good about that
whole rotation with all
three of those guys.

LINEBACKERS

One year after recording 18 tackles for

a loss, Sturgill anchors
the four-man linebacking corps and the Mike
linebacker. Dobran
said sophomore Matthews has impressed
in practice and will
likely line up alongside Sturgill at the Will
linebacker.
On the outside, either
West or Nathan Lower,
who recorded three
sacks in 2015, will be
the drop linebacker,
while the attack will
be either senior Victor Rockwell or junior
Desean Taylor. Dobran
said he feels confident
both players will be
able to step into those
positions and the
defense wont miss a
beat.

FROM PAGE 6

SECONDARY
The defensive backfield may be young
and inexperienced, but
Rivera makes up for
that and more.
Rivera is entering his
fourth year as a starter, and Dobran said
the seniors knowledge rivals that of his
coaches at times. The
5-9, 180-pound safety
picked off three passes
this year, and he has
continued that trend in
practices and scrimmages this fall.
Alex Rivera, hes
our quarterback back
there, Dobran said.
Hes doing a great job
of coaching up, helping
the coaches coach the
younger guys because
hes surrounded by
freshmen and sophomores and juniors who
havent played.
Williams was supposed to start at the
other safety position,
but his injury forces Hunt to play both
ways. That could
change during the
season based on how
freshman Seth Fedor
comes along. Dobran
said if Fedor (5-7, 130)
can get close to Hunts
level in understanding
of the defense, then
he will replace Hunt
to keep him fresh at
quarterback.
At cornerback, junior
Kyle Gaugh will start

at one spot, and Dobran explained how he

seems to be at the right
place at the right time
often. The other corner
position is up for grabs,
with Austin Pinkerington having the inside
track. Dobran said the
sophomore has had the
best offseason of all the
Spartans.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Erik Heinonen will

once again take placekicking duties after
posting 11 touchbacks
and going 34 of 37 on
extra points in 2015.

He also went to a kicking camp at Ohio State

in the offseason and
won an award there,
Dobran said.
In terms of punting,
Conneaut will continue
to use the quick kick in
which the quarterback
punts on fourth downs,
meaning Hunt will take
care of those duties.
As for returners, Rivera is the only Spartan
certain to be fielding
punts and kickoffs. Dobran said Sturgill could
be the only returner if
hes got enough energy
leftover.

Edgewood had its county rival on

Warriors will likely remember that
when the two teams meet this fall.

Parise, Warriors hope working together leads to success

last year, it was if you play
high school sports, you are
part of a team, and its something you remember the rest
of your life.
He defines that mantra as
the 4-40 rule.
What you do in your
four years of high school,
you remember the next 40
years, the coach explained.
A lot of kids today are being

What he was most pleased
with though was how his

players bought into his teamfirst philosophy and the level

made to the program.
The Warriors went 2-8 a

The final mark though is a

By the final week of the

EDGEWOOD: Katon takes over at quarterback

You never want to compare one year to another
because of personnel, but
since our personnel is only
different at the trigger,
wed like to think we can
do that, Parise said. Plus
last year I was hired in June
and we didnt have as much
time to implement things
we wanted to and we had
to do it on the run. But now
weve had a full off-season,a full summer and
intense two-a-days going on
now so wed like to think
we can. It will depend on
how much these guys can
gather and do successfully,
that will play out in the first
few weeks of the season.

they continue to amaze
me.

QUARTERBACK

The Warriors do have several players returning from

last years team. Gone however is long-time starting
quarterback Alex Wisnyai.
In his place this year will
be senior Ian
Katon.Katon
missed much of
last year due to
an injury sustained against
Jefferson the
second week of
Katon
the season, but
Parise didnt seem to have
a problem giving Katon the
reins to the offense.
(Katons) strength is his
ability to run the offense efficiently, Parise said. Then
he has some other qualities
that I have to see how they
will be brought out in the
first two scrimmages. I have
high expectations for him,
but I dont want to tamper
my enthusiasm too much
yet.

Many returners picked

Michael Daye, Matt Lilja and
Nick Munda.Ball control

will be the key to the

Edgewood attack, and
Parise said to expect to see
a lot of misdirection with
multiple players getting
touches.
One thing the Warriors
did show last year was an
ability to move the football,
and Parise is cautiously
optimistic this group can
do it as well.

suit up as a receiver this

season.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The strength of the Warriors will be in the backfield,

but that will mean the offensive line will be expected to
play well.
Corry Heron
will be at center,
and next to him at
guard will be Jacob
Arsulic and Clay
Reed. Tackles will
be Tyler Pocatko
and Liam Levito,
Heron
and Josh Bleil
starting at tight end. Reed is
the only one that did not start
a year ago. Arsulic earned
honorable mention honors on
the all-county team.

DEFENSIVE LINE

The defense will have

similar expectations as again
there will players with experience from a year ago. The
Warriors return nine of the
11 starters on that side of
the ball.
It begins on the
defensive line.
Parise praised defensive lineman
Dalton Talso, and
he also pointed
to defensive end
Talso
Jacob Arsulic
and tackles Tyler Pocatko as
leading the line.

LINEBACKERS

The Warriors have multiple options to play at all the

linebacker positions.
On the outside, Parise
pointed to Katon, Buckmeier
and Ethan Ward as options.

WARREN DILLAWAY | STAR BEACON

a home scrimmage.

On the inside, he said Munda, Daye, Lilja and Clay Reed

will all see action.

SECONDARY

Just like at receiver, Ernst

returns in the defensive

backfield as one of the best
corners in the county. Enrico
also returns to start in the
secondary.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Ernst will handle the punting duties for the Warriors
this fall. Placekickers will be
Matt Luce on field goals and
extra points, while Dylan

Canter will handle kickoffs.

Arsulic, meanwhile, will be
the long-snapper.
To start the season, Parise
said kick and punt returns
will be by committee.

Mustangs want to replicate, improve on historic 2015 season

BY MATT WAGNER
mwagner@starbeacon.com

ORWELL Grand Valley coach John Glavickas stresses to each senior class that it should
leave the program in
better shape than when
the players got it.
Last fall, the Mustangs
lived out that advice by
bouncing back in a big
way from a 4-6 season
in 2014. Not only did
GV win the conference,
it also qualified for
the playoffs for the
first time since 1999,
and not only did the
Mustangs make the
playoffs, but they also
hosted the programs

first-ever postseason
game.
Lets not forget ending Kirtlands 56-game
regular-season winning
streak in Week 2, either.
In 2016, Glavickas players face the
tall task of trying to
better the previous
years squad. Instead
of worrying about the
motivation, however,
the coach said the Mustangs have raised their
expectations.
Its not just being
successful in our conference, its not only
being successful in our
independent games
its being successful
and trying to get in the

playoffs, Glavickas
said. Why not us?
is the attitude. We
belong there, and we
hold them accountable.
We set the bar pretty
high for them now that
theyve achieved what
theyve achieved lets
just keep going forward.
Trying to replicate or
even better the 2015
squad could prove to
be difficult, though.GV
lost eight key players
to graduation, including quarterback Matt
Larned, whos playing
in college at Ashland,
and tight end/defensive
end Matt Moodt.
Losing key pieces isnt

new to GV, Glavickas

said. Instead, it has
been an opportunity
for other players to
fill in the void, and
Glavickas said hes been
impressed by what hes
seen in practice.
Every single year we
lose some key guys,
Glavickas said.What
you do is each year,
youre worried about
it, but then you watch
these kids as juniors
grow into young men.
Its like all of the
sudden they step up.
We just hope we keep
going.

MUSTANGS: Hernandez set to take on main tailback position

FROM PAGE 13

QUARTERBACKS
The biggest position of
question comes at one of the
most important on the field
quarterback.
Gone is Larned and his dual-threat capabilities out of
the pistol formation, running
for 775 yards and throwing
for another 680.
In 2016, it will
be up to either
senior Jake Kocab
or junior Michael
McGovern to
take over under
center. Kocab,
at 5-foot-8, 170
McGovern
pounds, played
fullback in 2015, while McGovern was Larneds backup
and even started a 24-0 win
on the road at Windham in
Week 8 that clinched the
NAC title.
Glavickas said he has faith
both can run the offense,
but Kocab has an advantage
of being a senior and has a
calm demeanor that the past
couple of GV quarterbacks
have had. McGovern, meanwhile, has a bigger presence
in the pocket with his 6-3
frame.
The one thing that we
need and the thing that Matt
brought to us the last two
years and Jake Vormelker
before him is the person who
is a consistent, steady-level
emotional guy that can step
in there and who isnt all
jacked up because its his
first start, Glavickas said.
We need somebody whos
going to protect the football
for us.
They both have their
strengths its just a question of whos going to want it

more and lead us in the right

direction.

RUNNING BACKS

The backfield will have a

different look in 2016 thanks
in large part to Eduardo Hernandez. The speedy junior
burst onto the scene last fall
with a 10.1 yards-per-carry
average, and many of his six
touchdowns were of more
than 30 yards.
The 5-9,
180-pound
Hernandez
accomplished
that as a backup
behind Colt Yox
and others, but
in 2016, he will
Hernandez
be the Mustangs
main tailback. Glavickas said
the Mustangs are excited to
see how he handles the extra

workload, especially considering his ability to break off

huge gains.
You cant coach the speed
he has, and this is the first
kid weve had in a long time
that is a pure sprinter,
Glavickas said. The kid can
fly. He proved it last year
as a sophomore, he gets
a seam, its 65 yards for a
touchdown.
Joining Hernandez in
the backfield will be senior
Anthony Crum at fullback.
Behind Crum on the depth
chart are junior Jerome
Evans and sophomore Nick
Reichek.

RECEIVERS

The Mustangs dont just

have speed in Hernandez,
though, as a few wideouts
have showcased their speed

in the past.
One of those players is
the coachs son, Noah. The
6-1, 170-pound senior took
second place in the Division
II 800-meter run at the state
track and field meet in June,
running a 53-second split on
the first 400 of the race.
Joining Noah Glavickas in
the flats will be senior Gabe
Arsulic, who is the teams
returning leading receiver
(80 yards). The slot receivers
will be either seniors Cody
Rhoads or Jake Reichek, and
tight end Cody Osburn provides a big target for either
Kocab or McGovern at 6-5
and 260 pounds.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The offensive line isnt the

deepest part of the team, but
John Glavickas has hopes for

the starting lineup, which

boasts four seniors on it.
It begins with two-year
letter winner Austin Mathis
at right tackle, and on the
opposite side will be Lukas
Quadros a 6-3, 220-pound
senior whos making the
switch from tight end to
tackle. Lining up alongside
those two at guard will
be senior Brandon Yauger
(6-0, 280) and junior Bobby
Copeland (6-5, 260), who
returned to playing football
after sitting out the past two
seasons.
At center, the Mustangs
turn to 5-10, 200-pound
senior Bradley Turner.
Behind the starters will
be senior Logan Sines, but
Glavickas said the line gets
really young after that.

DEFENSIVE LINE

It will be hard for GV to

replace Moodt and his 20
tackles for a loss (eight of
which were sacks), but the
team will return to a pair
who split time at the opposite end of the line last season in Osburn (three sacks)
and Quadros.
Yauger and
Mathis will man
the interior line.
Mathis proved to
be a handful for
opposing teams,
as he recorded 13
Mathis
tackles for a loss,
and Glavickas
said the senior should have
another good season on the
line.
Austin Mathis, hes a
beast, Glavickas said. Hes
got that wrestling mentality.
Hes tough to stop, and he

The Grand Valley Mustangs enter the 2016 season trying to replicate the success from 2015 when they hosted the programs

moves great for his size.

He moves good for a lot
of skill position guys, so
were really excited to
see what he brings to the
table up front.

LINEBACKERS

For the defense,

Glavickas said everything
runs through Crum, who
begins this fall healthy
after struggling with back
pains at the beginning of
last season.
Crum
showed why
hes an important piece
to the defense despite
those pains
last season.
Crum
Glavickas said once the 6-0,
210-pound senior got
back to 100 percent in

Week 3, the Mustang defense got better and better, allowing just 249.2
yards of total offense
per game (second best in
the county). Crum himself finished the season
with 13.5 tackles for a
loss from his middle
linebacker position.
When he can shut
down the middle with
those two d-tackles, it
just helps us tremendously, Glavickas said.
Hes a tremendous
force, and I think if
he plays a whole 10
games, were going to
be hearing about him on
a weekly basis with the
number of tackles and
everything else.
Joining him at linebacker will be Kocab.

SECONDARY

Another unit of which

Glavickas and the coach-

ing staff believe could be

good if it stays healthy is
the defensive backfield.
At safety,
the Mustangs
return senior
Jake Reichek, who is
entering his
fourth year
as a starter,
J. Reichek
and Glavickas said its as though
theres a coach on the
field because of it.
Joining will be Rhoads,
with the two combining
for four interceptions
in 2015. Junior Robert
Miller will back those
two up, and Glavickas
explained how he is
good enough to start
if not for Reichek and
Rhoads.
At cornerback, Arsulic
is coming off a four-interception season, while
Noah Glavickas will start

on the other side after

impressing during 7-on7 passing scrimmages
over the summer. Hernandez and McGovern
are behind them on the
depth chart.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Sines returns to kick

for the Mustangs after
connecting on 27 of 33
PATs, and John Glavickas
said the senior has grown
even more into the role.
As for punter, Crum
surprised his coach by
proving to be GVs best
option to boot the ball on
fourth downs.
As for kick and punt
returns, John Glavickas
said the coaching staff
hadnt decided who
to put back there, but
he hinted it could be a
pair of sophomore skill
players who have shown
some promise.

Chagrin Valley Conference,
Chagrin Division) remains to
be seen. The program hasnt
posted a winning record
since 2010 when they went
6-4. From the 2011 season
onward, the Eagles have
gone 17-32
The schedule isnt kind
to the Eagles. Geneva faces
four teams that qualified for
the playoffs in 2015, including opening the season
with Madison and Chardon,
but Sorber said he likes the
competitive schedule.
Its a tough schedule,
but were hoping that were
in the top part of this CVC
conference, Sorber said.
Were the new guys on the
block, but were not happy
where we were last year and
well be better. We got to be
better.

QUARTERBACKS

Although the Eagles have

lost last seasons starting
quarterback Brent Bell to
graduation, they have numerous options to take over
the wing-T offense.
Sorber pointed
out how its a
battle between
two players to
take the starting position
senior Chase
Livingston and
Livingston

sophomore Kyle Stark.

Livingston was pushing
Bell last season before the
5-foot-11, 175-pound senior
broke his collarbone in the
teams second scrimmage,
forcing him to miss seven
games.
Hes back and healthy,
and because he has better command, Sorber said
Livingston has the edge over
the 5-10 Stark. That being
said, Sorber described how
Stark is in hot pursuit of
the starting job.
Chases overall comprehension and handling of the
offense is just a little bit better now, Sorber said. Hes
probably a little bit better
passer, and Kyles probably
a little bit better with his
feet. Chase being the senior
commands the huddle and
things a little bit better. For
Kyle, a lot of this stuff is
still a little new.

RUNNING BACKS

The Eagles biggest returning piece comes in fullback

Juan Rodriguez, who didnt
get too many carries early
last fall.
When Austin Hungerford
went down with an injury,
though, he took advantage
of the situation. The 5-8,
185-pound fullback posted
three straight 100-yard
performances and totaled
nine touchdowns to close
out the final three games
of the 2015 season as a
starter.
Those performances took
Sorber and the coaching
staff by surprise, as the
Geneva head coach said
Rodriguez didnt look great
in the few looks he got prior

to those last thee games. (He

finished with a total of 425
rushing yards.)
Most importantly, though,
Rodriguez has
carried that endof-the-season
form into 2016.
He runs with a
unique
style, his
Rodriguez
shoulders are always moving hard to get
a hold of him, Sorber said.
Hes just powerful, and our
offense here, the fullback is
like a tailback in any other
offense. Hes going to get
his share of carries, and he
should get a lot of yards.
Joining Rodriguez in the
backfield is returning halfback Teagen Shaughnessy,
whom Sorber called one of
the best-blocking halfbacks
hes seen in some time, and
5-9, 165-pound junior Kyle
Hawk, who Sorber said will
get some important repetitions.
Spelling Rodriguez at fullback will be senior Josh Way
and junior Oscar Varckette.

RECEIVERS

The Eagles didnt attempt

many passes last year (they
threw for 22.1 yards per
game), but should they
choose to do so in 2016,
they will have a few targets.
At split end, Derek Cowles
returns, while Geneva has
two tight ends who could
split out in Jared Rice and
Danny Verdi. The senior Verdi is making the move from
halfback, while the junior
Rice will come in on two
tight-end sets.
Other split ends will be
5-10, 160-pound junior My-

lan Kanicki and Stark if he

isnt under center.

OFFENSIVE LINE
Sorber praised the offensive lines improvement at
the end of last season, and
he said they have continued
to advance as a unit despite
a couple of losses to graduation.
The line returns three
starters from
2015, led by
6-1, seniors Jon
Gildersleeve
and Abram
Alamo. The 6-1,
Alamo
285-pound Gildersleeve is coming off a year
where he earned all-conference and all-county conference honors, while Alamo
has a large presence at 6-5,
280 pounds.
Seniors Eli Thompson
and David Daughters and
junior Cory Culton round
out a starting offensive line
unit that boasts an average
weight of 260 pounds.
Well have some decent
size and some decent agility
up front, and theyre familiar with the system, Sorber
said. That was the biggest
part of it they were tentative for so long, and theyre
not tentative anymore. They
know their assignments,
they know what to do and
so I think with that, it gives
them confidence and makes
them play faster and more
aggressive.

DEFENSIVE LINE

On the defensive side of the

ball, Sorber expects to have
a strong front eight, and that
begin in the trenches.

The defensive line has

four returning starters, even
if they all werent in the
unit in 2015. Verdi played
at outside linebacker last
year, but in 2016 hes joined
by 6-2, 280-pound senior
Jimmy Holchnect on the
interior of the line. Rice and
6-1, 190-pound senior Matt
Sovak will play at both defensive end positions.
Theyre strong, good size
and theyre athletic, Sorber said. So, I expect our
defensive line to be pretty
good, and we return three of
our four linebackers as well.
So, the front eight looking
pretty good.

LINEBACKERS

Sorber said the Eagles are

expecting big things out
of the linebacker corps,
beginning with Rodriguez
and Way in the middle. The
6-0, 200-pound Way posted
three tackles for a loss last
season.
Senior Kody
Brown will occupy one of the
outside linebacker positions,
while Hawk will
take over the
spot Verdi used
Brown
to play. Sorber
praised Hawk as a big-time
playmaker, and although
weighing just 160 pounds,
the junior shows great
strength by totaling 1,000
pounds in the three lift.

SECONDARY

Sorber admitted the defensive backfield has questions

regarding personnel, but

GENEVA EAGLES
ROSTER

WARREN DILLAWAY | THE STAR BEACON

The Geneva Eagles enter their second season under coach Chip Sorber, beginning with a game at the SPIRE
Institute against Madison on Friday, Aug. 26. For Geneva at a Glance, please see Page 27.

EAGLES: Kicker is a two-way competition

FROM PAGE 17

he also expressed his belief the

team has enough talent to plug
into the positions to be all right.
Shaughnessy returns to one of
the cornerback positions, while
Cowles will line up on the other
side and Stark will play safety.
Behind them, Sorber said there
are a fair share of sophomores
who seem ready to contribute at
the varsity level as well.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Way will once again take
over the punting duties after
averaging 29.1 yards per punt
in 2015.
Placekicker is still up for
grabs, though. Last years
kicker, junior Logan Cermak,
is competing against freshman
Blake Peet for the position,
with both guys having connected on 45-yard field goals
in practice. Sorber said the
battle could carry over into the

Carols Corner Child Care

season, but he anticipates the

kicking game to be better than
2015.
From a kickoff standpoint
and field goal/ extra point
standpoint, we are far and
above where we were last year,
Sorber said. Our kicking game I
expect to be a weapon.
As for kick and punt returners, Sorber pointed to skill position guys such as Shaughnessy
and Hawk to get over those
duties.

game. Theres a chance that could
be the same this year, meaning the
Falcons will need to finally beat
the Bulldogs.

Falcons hope to get into the playoffs in 2016

BY MICHAEL GRECO
mgreco@starbeacon.com

JEFFERSON So
close, yet so far.
Last season, the Jefferson Falcons finished
with a 6-4 mark, but
three losses were by
four points or less.
It was a year of perseverance, 12th-year
coach Jimmy Henson
said. We had key
guys injured, but I was
proud of the way the
kids stepped up. I think
they got valuable experience for this year.
Jefferson could take
heart in the fact that
three of its four losses
came against teams
that made it to the play-

offs. Poland (a 27-6 loss

in Week 3),Lakeview
(a 17-13 loss in Week
6) and LaBrae (a 17-14
loss in Week 10) qualified for the Division III,
Region 7, the Division
IV, Region 11 and
Division V, Region 15
playoffs, respectively,
with LaBrae advancing
to a regional semifinal
game.
The LaBrae loss was
especially painful because the Falcons still
had an outside shot
of qualifying for the
playoffs themselves.
Henson pointed out
that this has the 2016
team want to get over
the hump.
It wasnt easy, but

we hung in there every

game, Henson said.
Were right there for
a playoff spot in Week
10. We had our chances every game. Were
working on taking that
next step.
The Falcons went 3-3
in a very competitive
All-American Conference, White Tier

Division that includes

traditional powers such
as Poland and Hubbard.
Henson expects the
challenges to keep coming from the rest of the
league as well as the
non-league schedule, as
Jefferson opens up the
season against playoff-qualifying Grand
Valley.

down to fundamentals.
We have to hold on to the ball,
block and tackle, run the ball
and stop the run, he said. We
need to get better at fundamentals.
From what hes seen so far,
Henson expressed some optimism about his squad.
Weve done some good
things, Henson said. The thing
is to get better every day. In
high school, you have to find the
personality of your team. Were
getting closer.

QUARTERBACKS

Zack Collins, who threw for

1,192 yards and 11 touchdowns
last season, has departed.
J.J. Henson is the
new signal-caller.The
junior started as
a slot receiver last
season, catching nine
passes for 103 yards,
but also played some
quarterback, espeHenson
cially during the first
half of Jeffersons Week 1 win
over Grand Valley in 2015.

Hes shown good leadership,

Jimmy Henson said. He can be a
dual-threat guy for us. Hes put
in the time for us.
Sophomore Tyler Messenger is
Hensons back up.

RUNNING BACKS

The one-back set features senior Jeremiah Knight, who is one

of the best in the state.
He led the AAC White Tier with
1,593 yards (the next closest
in the conference was Polands
Dylan Garver at 1,325), and he
scored 21 touchdowns en route
to accruing 138 points. These
numbers helped earn Knight
third-team All-Ohio honors in
Division IV.
Knight holds the school rushing record, as well single-season
and single-game totals.The
5-foot-10, 200-pound senior
brings more than stats, though,
as he is entering his fourth year
as a starter, and Henson said
that experience is invaluable.
Hes the all-time leading rushing and also holds single-game
and season records, Henson
said. Hes a four-year starter,
so he brings a lot of experience.
Hes a very hard runner, hits the
hole and understands what were
trying to do offensively.

Dragons look to compete in every game

SAYBROOK The 2015 season
wasnt disappointing for Frank

For him, it came down to the fact
the Dragons didnt compete in the

Hall is insistent that wont be the

case in 2016, as Lakeside tries to
improve even further as a program. The Dragons went winless
in 2014.
This season I am hopeful we we
will compete and give maximum
effort in every game that we play,
Hall said. Last year we really only
competed in half of our games,
and that is something we dont

want to do this season. We want

to give our best effort every game
and see where it takes us.
One thing the Dragons have that
they didnt last year was a better
understanding of their league
opponents.

The schedule
isnt kind to the
Dragons, whether
it is in or out of the

the opening game is
important for Lakeside

the rest of the season.

LAKESIDE: Dragons have new offensive coordinator, quarterback

FROM PAGE 25

Tier for the first time in 2015,

and it showed the team wasnt
on the level of the rest of the
conference, losing all three
games against Boardman,
Austintown Fitch and Warren G. Harding. All three of
those teams qualified for the
playoffs in either Division I or
Division II.
Despite going winless in the
conference last fall, Hall expressed his belief Lakeside can
compete against the Mahoning
Valley powerhouses. According to him, its all about basic
football fundamentals.
Our discipline and our gap
accountability are going to be
huge this season, as well as
reading our keys and being a
sounder football team, Hall
said. Physically, we are getting
better, we have some great
athletes on this team and they
just need to learn to play the
game better and that is on us
as a coaching staff to coach
them up properly.
Just as important for the
Dragon will be starting off the
season correctly.Lakeside will
start the season against Edgewood, a team the Dragons best
21-7 in the 2015 opener.
Added to the fact its the
season opener, the game
also comes against a county
rival, and Hall stressed how
that adds an intensity to that
matchup.
We open up against Edgewood and thats a big time
rivalry game, so you just put
your helmet on, strap it up and
get ready to play some football, Hall said. Coach (Ken)
Parise has a very well coached
team over there and he does
a very good job in running

the Wing-T offense and with

his base 4-4 defense, but we
are looking forward to a great
battle that night.

QUARTERBACKS
Last years squad struggled
to find rhythm offensively,
and it showed at the quarterback position.Three different
guys played under center for
the Dragons, and yet they
combined for just 372 yards
through the air.
Seeking to change the issues
at that position and on that
side of the ball, Hall brought in
a new offensive coordinator in
Greg Jahola.
Offensively last season we
were atrocious, Hall said. We
went out and hired Greg Jahola
to be our new OC, and he has
brought in some new energy
and we are throwing the ball
much better.
Along with a new offensive
coordinator, there will also be
a new quarterback.
In fall camp, its been a
battle between junior Spencer
Loftus and sophomore Johnny
Anservitz. Hall said Loftus will
likely be the starter during
Week 1 because hes a little
further along than Anservitz
physically.
Right now Spencer probably
has the lead on it, Hall said.
He has worked very hard
and he is a little more mature

physically.

RUNNING BACKS
Junior Octavious Sanders
comes back after a sophomore
campaign in which
he averaged 5.2
yards per rush on
24 carries, but he
wont be handed
the starting job
just because he is
the teams leading
Sanders
returning rusher.
Hall explained how 5-foot-6,
155-pound senior Cyle Macfee
has been pushing Sanders to
start at tailback. Macfee averaged 2.9 yards per carry last
year on just 18 attempts.
We have some upperclassmen battling it our for the
starting running back spot and
whoever wins, we feel we will
have a very talented starter
and backup, who will both play
a lot, Hall said.

RECEIVERS
Hall couldnt help but be
excited about Lakesides skill
position players, and that
holds true at receiver as well.
Senior Matt Lunghofer will
lead the receiver corps, having
led the team in all receiving
statistical categories (11 recpetions, 183 yards). Standing
at 6-7, Lunghofer should provide either Loftus or Anservitz
with a tall target in the passing

game.
Lining up on the opposite
side of Lunghofer will be
senior David Carlton. The
starting H-back will be senior
Robert Walker, while the
Z-receiver will be either junior
Devin Penny and senior Tyler
Nagle, who played some at
quarterback in 2015.
We have all upperclassmen
at the skill positions who have
a great deal of talent. Hall
said.

OFFENSIVE LINE
The Dragons have plenty
of experience up front, with
four returning starters on the
offensive line.
On the left side of the line,
seniors Ethan Bish and Greg
Ehazs will be at tackle and
guard, respectively, while on
the right, junior Parker Meaney
and senior Patton Sidbeck
will be deployed at guard and
tackle, respectively. A team
captain, Sidbeck brings with
him the most amount of experience as a two-time all-county
performer.
Senior Nick Lemay missed
out last season because of
injury, but he returns to play
center for the Dragons.

DEFENSIVE LINE
The defensive line could
some hits to graduation,
including Jared Patton. Patton

recorded 13 sacks in 2015, the

most by a defensive player in
Ashtabula County.
Sidbeck is the lone returning starter in the unit, as he
steps back into the defensive
tackle slot. Lining up on the
inside next to him will 6-1,
274-pound junior Luciano
Cunningham. At the defensive
end positions, 5-10, 215-pound
senior Romeo Aponte and the
6-1, 247-pound Bish will start
in Lakesides base 4-3 defense.

LINEBACKERS
The Dragons will look to
replace linebacker Matt Rocco,
who recorded 48 solo tackles
eight of which went for a
loss last fall.
In the middle of the defense, junior D.J. Rosario and
sophomore Isiah Fleming are
competing to start at linebacker. The outside spots were set
early in camp, with sophomore
Jose Reynoso starting at Will
linebacker and Walker at Sam
linebacker.

SECONDARY

Carlton is back at strong

safety with senior Donnie
Gaylord transitioning from
linebacker to fill the free safety
spot.
Penny returns at
corner, and there
was a competition
for the position
opposite him
between junior
KeVon Colbert
and sophomore
Penny
Cortez Vaughn.

and Lunghofer, an all-county

Madison tries to defend WRC after graduating 22 players

BY DAVID NEGIN
sports@starbeacon.com

MADISON Opening his

17th year as coach, Tim
Willis and his Madison Blue
Streaks have consistently
done one thing over those
years win.
Graduating 22 seniors
from a team that finished
9-2 overall, which included
a championship run in the
first year of the Western
Reserve Conference, causes most coaches to go in a
complete rebuild mode.
Willis, however, believes
he has a program that can
just take the next man up
philosophy.
I just think teams know
we are consistently a pretty
good football team, said

We have the ability, we have the talent to win

our league if the kids play as a team, learn to be
disciplined and do the little things correctly.
We have had three (playoff-qualifying) groups
in a row who have learned to do those things.
Tim Willis
Madison head coach

Willis, who has accumulated

a 106-55 record at Madison.
We had a great group of
kids last year who did a lot
of the little things right and
worried about one week at
a time. Hopefully, the kids
from this year learned that.
That is because he knows
the cupboard certainly isnt
bare in terms of fielding a
talented football team. It is
replacing the senior leadership and mastering of the

intangibles that will make

the difference.
We have the ability, we
have the talent to win our
league if the kids play as a
team, learn to be disciplined
and do the little things correctly, Willis said. We have
had three (playoff-qualifying) groups in a row who
have learned to do those
things.
Willis knows that with senior tailback Isaiah McClure

(907 yards rushing, nine

touchdowns) and quarterback Josh Gibson (641 yards
passing, 12 touchdowns)
returning, he has experience
at two important positions
on offense.
There will be completely
new faces this season along
the offensive line, at wide
receiver and many in the defensive backfield. The competition among the players,
Willis said, will only help.

The competition is always a good thing because

they dont get complacent
during practice, Willis said.
We have a lot of jobs that
are available, but I think we
have quality players to plug
in there.
How quickly those positions get solved will be
crucial as the team looks to
defend its WRC crown and
make the playoffs for the
fourth straight year.
Thats always our expectations no matter what the
year is, Willis said. I think
weve built a program here
in Madison where people
understand thats what we
are all about.

MADISON BLUE STREAKS

BLUE STREAKS: McClure will take the lead at tailback after sharing spot in 2015
OFFENSIVE LINE

FROM PAGE 29

QUARTERBACK
As a transfer from Lakeside last year, it took
Gibson a while to learn the
system and earn his way
into the starting lineup.
After taking over the
starting job in Week 4, the
6-foot-2 signal caller did
win his first eight starts for
the Blue Streaks, but offensive coordinator Mike Martin is seeing a more mature
player during two-a-days
that is capable of improving
on his 47 percent completion percentage last year.
Josh is now in a position
that instead of learning a
system, he is participating
in it, he said. When he is
in line with what we want
as coaches, hes as good as
anyone weve had. Id have
to go back a ways to name
someone who has the arm
talent he has. He certainly
is capable of stretching the
defense. I think that was
pretty evident last year.
The coaches have also
been pleased with sophomore Andrew Bortz (5-9,
165), who will back up Gibson when called on.

RUNNING BACKS

Having been the two

in the one-two
punch alongside
Nick Brooks
(1,448 yards, 14
touchdowns),
McClure (5-10,
175 pounds) now
will take the lead
McClure
in the offensive
backfield with Brooks graduation.
The kid is one of the

most electric players in the

area, and thats not a secret, Martin said. We plan
on building on that. The
good thing is that I think
we have enough athleticism
around him that it doesnt
have to be a one-man
show.
The other athletic running
back he was referring to is
junior Ken Cline (5-9, 180).
Leading the power running attack will be fullbacks
Mark Primer and Alex Caswell, both of whom are at
least 6-3 and 225 pounds.
Ken is going to help us
be a one-two punch, because Isaiah is going to be
a full-time defensive player
(safety) for us too, Martin

said. Weve been really

pleased with him in camp.

RECEIVERS

Gibson will have a completely new receiving corps

this season, but
one that the
coaching staff
is excited about.
Seniors Dhel
Duncan-Busby
(6-2, 175.), a
Duncan-Busby standout on the
basketball team
but hurt for most of last
football season, and Brandon Horowski (5-11, 170)
have emerged as the
leading candidates as
wideouts.
Both of these guys have

bided their time and I think

they are both poised for
a very good senior year,
Martin said. They have
different skill sets. Brandon
works in space better and
Dhel is a little more of our
vertical guy.
Senior Kyle Baker (5-10,
165) and junior Cam Caito
(5-10, 160) are competing
for playing time and will
see action in multiple receiver sets.
The coaching staff will
also utilize seniors Ted
Davis and Josh Ferry, as
well as junior Seth Schrock,
as a rotation at a tight end,
giving Martin some big
targets and run blockers on
the edge.

One of the reason Madison was able to average

nearly 34 points per game
last season was an all-senior line that was big and
strong.
This years team will be
smaller but perhaps faster,
fitting in with Madisons
zone-blocking schemes.
Eight players are vying for
the five spots on the line,
and Martin was looking
forward to the scrimmages
to see which combination
works best.
The starting offensive line will
likely be seniors
Josh Thomas
(6-2, 255), Jacob
Gerhardt (5-9,
185) and Zack
Gerhardt
Cerne (5-10, 260)
at tackles and
guards, respectively, while
juniors Colin Byers (6-1,
210) and Clay Smith (5-10,
205 lbs.) are will be at tackle and center.
Martin said that senior
Devin Ward and juniors
Cam Luster and Noah Sample were all in competition
for playing time as well.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Defensive coordinator
Mike Gilligan has had some
strong defenses in the past,
but the size, strength and
versatility of his defensive
line and linebackers will
make it tough for the opposition to run the football.
Leading the way is Primer,
a junior defensive end, who
led the area with 14 sacks
last season and the player

MADISON BLUE STREAKS

MADISON: Blue Streaks must replace all but one starter in secondary
didnt give up many big
plays downfield.
Gilligan has to replace all
but McClure in the secondary, including standout
cornerback Nick Law, who
is once again teammates
with Vince Primer at Lake
Erie College.
You have a four-year
starter you have to replace
in Nick Law, it hurts, Willis
said. He brought it all. He
brought the leadership, the
knowledge, the technique,
the talent. We ran our defense around Nick.
Caito, Horowski, Duncan-Busby, Baker, and
sophomore Jonas Pinta are
all competing for the two
corner spots. Junior Owen
Myers (6-1, 175)
will join McClure
at the safety positions in some
formations.
However the
competition
pans out, GilliMyers
gan said he will
adjust his defense accordingly.
We have to put our best
11 players out there, even
if we have to change things
up a bit, Gilligan said. Its
no rocket science.

FROM PAGE 30

the coaches believe colleges

will be recruiting in the near
future.
Lining up
opposite him is
another returner
in Ferry. Thomas
Primer
and Byers will
also play defensive end,
while senior Zack Pridemore and Gerhardt will play
the nose in Madisons 3-4
hybrid scheme.
The player both Gilligan
and Willis most wanted to
talk about was Schrock, a
junior who will play along
the line and also as an outside linebacker.
Scrock is the biggest surprise in camp, Willis said.
He is one that people are
going to know about real
quick into our season.
The combination of athletes will make it tough for
opposing quarterbacks.
We have a 6-4 kid (Primer), a 6-6 kid (Ferry) and
Schrock who is like a wind
up toy, Gilligan said. We
are going to be able to
pressure the quarterback
and that is going to help us
with our inexperience in the
back half of our defense.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Caswell, a senior returning starter, will

line up on the
inside, and Davis
will join him.
Also returning at
outside linebacker will be senior

Primer, who now plays at
Lake Erie College, will be
senior Brian Zehe (6-0, 185).
Brian Zehe has been a
good, solid player for us JVwise, Gilligan said. Now, it

is his turn. He works hard

and is a good kid along with
being a standout wrestler.
Luster, Cline, and sophomore Dominic Conforte
will compete for playing
time.

SECONDARY
One of the reasons Gilligans team only surrendered 11 points per game
last year, including five
shutouts, was having an
experienced secondary that

Madison will use two new

kickers this season. Senior
Seth Moyer will handle all
field goal and extra point
duties, while junior Cole
Hejduk will kick off.
McClure will be the punter
and will also resume his
role of returning kicks, having scored a pair for touchdowns last season. Davis
returns as the long snapper.

The Battle of the Valleys was
beyond lopsided in 2015. If the
Lakers can manage to stay
somewhat healthy heading into
the matchup this year, they will try
to erase last years performance
from their minds.

Croston, Lakers hope to have

a better season in 2016
ANDOVER The
2015 season was one to
forget for the Pymatuning Valley Lakers.
Injuries to starters
such as at quarterback
and linebacker/running
back early in the season
compounded a problem with depth, forcing
coach Neal Croston to
toss freshmen to the
fire by starting them by
Week 5. The end result
was a 2-8 record.
While the season
didnt prove to be
fruitful in 2015, Cros-

ton expressed his belief

it should help out the
Lakers in 2016. He
reasoned because of
the numerous injuries,
many players learned
where they need
improvement, which
he said started in the

weight room.
Now, hes optimistic
the 2016 PV squad
wont have a repeat of
the previous fall, even
though the roster only
has four seniors on it.

kids believe that they can
win.
In order for the Lakers to
be successful, Croston said it
comes from the right mentality.
PV must play physical to
hang with teams, and the
coach noticed the Lakers
seemed to have adapted to
that style of play in practice
and in the teams first scrimmage against Jefferson.
Weve got to be physical,
Croston said. Weve been
stressing that at practice and
scrimmages, and weve got
to compete every play. We
cant take plays off. Weve got
to give ourselves a chance in
the fourth quarter to win. We
cant be blown out in the first
half or whatever may be.

QUARTERBACKS

Steven Blascak came into

his sophomore campaign
looking to take over at
quarterback. His reign under
center was cut short with
an injury in Week 3, though,
and Isaac Orahood took over.
Now that Blascak is healthy,
however, its
his job to lose
again, according
to Croston. Even
if the Lakers
are trying to
Blascak
develop backup
and third-stringer options
following their experience
last fall, the PV coach said he
likes what hes seen from the

RECEIVERS

Isaac Orahood began last

fall at receiver, but he had to
move to the backfield thanks
to Blascaks injury.
The 6-2 senior will move
back to edges, where sophomore Bryce Farmer could
rotate with him. The starting
slot receiver will two-time
letter-winner Gunnar Ellis,
who nabbed 11 throws for
138 yards last fall.

OFFENSIVE LINE

WARREN DILLAWAY | STAR BEACON

Pymatuning Valley running back Gaige Willis tries to elude an Edgewood tackler after receiving the
hand off from quarterback Steven Blascak (5) on Friday night at Edgewoods Corlew Stadium.

5-foot-9, 170-pound junior.

Hes taken on a leadership
role for us, and he knows
the plays, knows the calls,
Croston said. Hopefully by
Week 1, hell have control of
the huddle.

RUNNING BACKS

The biggest returning piece

from injury could be running back Gaige Willis. The
junior suffered a torn kidney
during a scrimmage, and it
forced him to sit out almost
the entire season.
That caused three-year
letter-winner Luke Hock-

ran to carry the load in the

backfield. While the 5-8,
195-pound Hockran did well
enough with a six-yards-percarry average and
a total of 505
yards over the
entire season,
defenses focused
on the senior,
slowing down
Hockran
PVs offense.
With Willis back, though,
that wont be the case, and
often those two guys will be
in the backfield at the same
time.
Its nice to have two backs

that we dont have to count

on one, Croston said. They
both can block for each other, they both can run hard,
they can both catch the ball
they dont have just one
skill that they can do. So, it
should help with defenses
not zoning in on one player,
where I think we have two
backs that can both carry it
15 to 25 times a game.
Behind those two on the
depth chart are sophomore
Jacob Chiles and freshman
Logan Giddings, of whom
Croston described as not
afraid to go against anyone

One of the biggest losses for the Lakers came at

center, with Justin Swiger
graduating after owning the
position for three years.
In order to fill that void,
Croston and the coaching
staff is turning to sophomore Noah Campbell. Standing at 5-8 and 150 pounds,
Campbell picked up enough
experience his freshman year
to earn a varsity letter.
Justins younger brother,
junior Jaret Swiger, returns
as a starter on the line, as
does fellow junior Chase
Braden. Joining them will be
juniors Caleb Bean (6-2, 245)
and Brent Knowles (5-8, 195)
in the starting lineup, while
sophomore R.J. Patchell will
rotate in from time to time.
Weve got a few bodies
that we can rotate in, but
the key is we got to get
that center-snap exchange,
Croston said. We had before
the older Swiger in there for
the last two, two-and-a-half
years. So, anytime you have a
new center, thats key.

PV: Croston wants to rest Blascak on D

FROM PAGE 35

DEFENSIVE LINE
With a roster of 26
guys, its hard for the
Lakers to build depth at
certain positions.
The defensive line
seems to be the exception to the rule.
Sure, guys must go two
ways, with the tackle
positions taken by guys
from the offensive line,
but Croston said it will
be a rotation of those
players, meaning each
one will get some rest.
As for the
defensive
end spots,
PV is two
deep on
both sides.
Second-year
player SteDodge
ven Dodge
looks to build off a
campaign where the junior accrued 12 tackles
for a loss, and others
who will line up on the
ends will be Giddings,
sophomore Logan
Drnek and Patchell.
We have 28, 27
guys, but it seems like
we have guys that are
willing to put their nose
in there right now,
Croston said. Were
going to need that to
face teams that do
have more players, and
were going to need to
rotate in so that way
were fresh in the third,
fourth quarter.

defense. Croston listed

backers.

SECONDARY

Blascak made a name

for himself as a freshman when he took over
as a starting cornerback
in Week 4, and since
then, he has picked off
four passes despite
not just starting nine
games total over two
seasons.
Although he has proven to be a good corner,
Croston expressed his
desire to want to rest
Blascak if its possible,
which puts the onus on
players such as Chiles
to force his way into
the lineup.
Hes an athletic guy,
and he played as a
freshman for us, Croston said. So, hes a guy

were going to count on,

but at the same time,
we got to be able to give
him rest on defense,
too, since hell be playing quarterback.
The other
starting
corner will
be Orahood.
Ellis and
Farmer will
see some
time in the
Orahood
defensive
backfield as well.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Campbell kicked off

for the Lakers last fall,
but he finds himself
fighting with Orahood
and Ellis for kicking
duties. No matter who
wins the job, Croston
said he likely wont kick
many extra points after
touchdowns.
At punter, meanwhile,
Farmer and Blascak
show the most promise
there.
Croston said there are
four or five skill-position
players who could return
punts and kickoffs, and
he mentioned the possibility of rotating them
during the season.

While the plan is not to

throw, St. John has some
options at receiver.
Last years second-leading
pass catcher Nate Severino will once again be on
the field after grabbing 11
throws, while returning
letterman Logan George will
join him. Junior Etahn Czup
and freshman Zach Ballard
could also see some time.

expected to start

The 2016 St. John Heralds expect to have even more success than in 2015 when they notched their first win

FROM PAGE 38

DEFENSIVE LINE
The Heralds have decided to
scrap their original intent for a
5-2 defense with a 4-4.
Brandon Blank, who was
originally slated to start at nose
tackle, will move out to defensive end. On the inside it will
be Nejbauer and Ballard, with
Edgewood transfer Elrod at the
other end spot.

LINEBACKERS

The front six is where Iarocci expects the strength of the

defense to be this year, with the
two inside linebackers supple-

menting what the defensive line

brings.
Those inside
linebackers will be

Nejbauer. Rivera and
Lagoa will line up on
the outside spots.
Our front six is
Nejbauer
very strong, we have
some youth in the secondary, but
theyre good athletes so were expecting big them from them, Iarocci said. But the size we have up
front and our linebackers, I think
our front six is really strong.

SECONDARY

What the Heralds secondary

lacks in experience they make

up for his athleticism.
Christian Blank will lead the
young secondary at corner, while
on the opposite side of him is
freshman David Cumberledge,
who won a state championship
in wrestling as an eighth grader.

time at safety, and Timonere
and Czup will get some playing
time behind those two.

snapper.
