Lateral Line Passing

Pupils: start in pairs, progress to groups of 4.

Kit: Rugby balls, cones of 4 colours.

Demonstrate the lateral pass, or show pupils the Wayne smith

passing video (resources 6.30 8.00 minutes).

Pupils pass side on with their partner. Using the teaching points card
to help them. (image 1)
Pupils should then walk and pass to their partner, remembering to
always pass sideways or backwards.

Organise pupils to stand in four channels. (see image 2).

The pupil on the left will start with the ball. When they reach the
first cone, the next pupil should jog out ready to receive the ball.
(image 3)
The ball should be passed like this down the line.
When they reach the end they jog back and the next group goes.
Pupils should not be stood around for long periods of time, so
organise pupils so there are several of these areas.
Pupils should swap channels between each go.
After 1-2 minutes, the ball should then start on the right.

Progressions.

When pupils have accomplished this confidently organise them as

can be seen in Progression 1. Pupils begin to run at speed to the
opposite side and pop pass to the next in line.
Set out different colour cones, (Progression 2), when you shout a
colour pupils distance themselves and move out towards that colour
cone or inwards to vary the distance of the passes.

Regressions

Pupils can reduce the speed that they are running to a walk until
they can catch and throw accurately.
Reduce space between the channels for the pass distance.
