Kurt Summers, Chicago City Treasurer, thanked the Department of Justice for their investigation into the Chicago Police Department. The findings revealed root causes for the significant trust gap between police and residents in underserved communities. However, police reform is only the start and investing in communities and education must also be priorities to address systemic inequality plaguing the city for decades. Most importantly, the city and police department must work together to enact meaningful change and ensure this report is the last of its kind.

Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers on DOJ Investigation
"I want to thank Attorney General Loretta Lynch, US Attorney Zachary Fardon and the Department of Justice for their thorough approach and unprecedented resources in addressing an issue that is critically important to Chicago's future. Todays findings lay bare many of the root causes of the significant trust gap between police and residents in our most underserved communities and particularly communities of color, but it is only a start - there are many other issues that need to be addressed if we are going to lift up all Chicagoans and help this city reach its full potential. While police reform is necessary, investing in our communities and improving our public education system also should be top priorities in any sincere effort to address the systemic inequality that has plagued our city for decades. Most importantly, the collective spirit of our city coming together with the hardworking men and women in the Chicago Police Department to impact meaningful change is the only way to make this report the last of its kind. Chicago has risen to overcome every challenge in its history and we will rise together to overcome this one." - Treasurer Kurt Summers ###
