Keeping in touch
Being a sort of old-age techie, I use Facebook
as a way of keeping in touch with people. I started
out wanting to keep in touch with young people in
the parish who were off to college, as well as with
nieces and grandson. Then lots of my contempo-
raries started using it, and now I’ve reconnected
with high school classmates, people I worked with
in the 70’s, etc., etc, etc.
It’s good to stay aware of what’s going on
with friends and with groups we belong to. How-
ever, in our busy lives which go in many different
directions it’s a challenge to keep everybody
equally informed. This newsletter is one commu-
nication that goes to everybody in the parish. The
weekly bulletin and announcements reach those
who are in church. The weekly email alerts those
who use the internet regularly. And the recently
updated website (www.reddoors.com) is a way to
reach people who may be thinking about joining
us, as well as supplementing other communica-
tions with additional pictures, schedules, newslet-
ters, etc.
All of these ways of staying in touch are as
good as the effort we expend to use them. How-
ever, they still fairly superficial. They are good at
helping us know “what’s going on” and “when
things are happening.” They really don’t help
much with “who we are” and “what we care
about.” At this week’s Vestry meeting we dis-
cussed how little we may know about one another,
even after attending the same church, maybe even
serving on the same committee, for years .

It takes time, effort, and a willingness to be
open to get to know one another.
The time and effort come first in worshipping
together, then in taking part in other activities.
Coffee hour can be one time for us to visit and
learn a little bit more about one another. Taking
part in some of the activities of the parish is an-
other. I’ve heard some good conversations while
people were painting the church or cleaning the
garden, not to mention enjoying a concert on a
spring afternoon. The Funraising efforts are in-
tended to bring us together as a community, as
well as to raise funds for the parish budget.
We tend to think of summer as a time when
less is happening in the church, so we don’t need
to be there. However, with fewer planned activi-
ties may come a better chance to take time to have
conversation with one another. The single service
at 9 in July and August means there is also one
coffee hour. People who may go to different ser-
vices for the rest of the year have a chance to
catch up or to begin to know one another.
In our baptisms we promise to do all in our
power to support one another in our lives in
Christ. Taking time to get to know one another is
the beginning of keeping that promise. It’s a good
summer ministry.

Farmers’ Market on the Green
At the FUNRAISING-sponsored coffee hour on
May16th, the committee members were inspired by
the enthusiasm and support for our parish. Many
people signed up to man St. John's booth at the
New Hartford Farmers’ Market from 4-7 PM on
June 4, July 9, August 6, September 3 & October 1,
as well as donate handmade items such as: baked
goods, jams, beaded necklaces, bracelets, pillows,
scarves, cocktail napkins, baby quilts, homegrown
flowers and vegetables. You can help us offset St.
John's budget deficit and support community pro-
jects. We welcome your donations of time and

Opportunity to Help
On Sunday, June 13th after the 10:00 a.m. service,
we need help moving file boxes and small furniture
pieces from the existing office building into the at-
tached garage. Office and storage space in the for-
mer Licia House will be rented during construction
of the addition. Please contact John Gargiulo (379-
1544) or Rose Osborne (379-5535) to volunteer.
Bits & Pieces
Prayer Requests— Requests are handled confi-
dentially through the Rector. Prayers will continue
for a month unless other time periods are specified.
You may fill out a prayer request form or call the
rector at 693-1851.
Wednesday Evening Services—Please join us at
7:30 PM for a quiet service offering time for reflec-
tion and prayer. Anointing for healing of mind,
body & spirit is offered following communion.

THANKSGIVING IN THE SPRING
Help for the Food Banks
Food Lists in Narthex
Last year we contributed 60 bags of groceries to the
local food banks. Some of the food was brought in
by parishioners and some came from asking shoppers
at grocery stores to donate one or more items.
We’ll have lists in the narthex with suggestions.
We’d also like adults to supplement the work of the
youth group in asking for help at the grocery stores
on June 5. Contact the rector to help.
An Easy Way to Help
When you buy shopping/gift cards through St.
John’s, you are making a contribution that does not
cost you financially. It may take a little planning.
Orders are taken the 1st and 3rd Sundays, and
cards are delivered on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.
Order folds are available in the narthex and can be
placed in the lockbox at any time.

Help us welcome visitors and newcomers. Prepa-
ration instructions are posted. Coffee supplies
other than cream are available in the kitchen.
Baked goods are terrific, but not always necessary.
A sign-up sheet is
posted in the parish
hall. There are open-
ings during June.
Coffee hour is hosted during July
& August by the greeters at the 9:00 a.m. service.
The concert for Haiti was wonderful. Special thanks
go to Brian Phillips, Luke Alibozek, and Mimi
Harden for bringing the event together.
The Youth Group will host coffee hour on June 13.
Help from youth and their families will be greatly
appreciated as we honor graduating seniors.
We are working on a date to celebrate all the hard
work and fun times we’ve enjoyed this year.
PETER’S RETREAT

Go with a group to take dinner to an AIDS
residence in Hartford. Each month a group from
St. John’s coordinates and serves a meal.
We generally arrive about 5:00 PM and dine
with the residents at 5:30 PM, returning to St.
John’s around 7:00 PM. The residents are respon-
sible for set-up and clean-up.
Special thanks to the Alibozek family for
taking the meal on May 22nd. We are looking for
coordinators during the summer months. Call the
office if you are willing to help.

helped with the Spring clean-up of the Gill Gar-

On April 24 the youth group took dinner to Pe-
ter’s Retreat, and HIV/AIDS residence in Hart-
ford. All—youth and residents—were fed.

The Youth Group, with a lot of

help from Mimi Harden, put on
a concert to benefit Haiti. Five
groups played. More than
$2,600 was raised. And a
good time was enjoyed by all.
