3rd and 4th Grade Basketball Coach
Cedar City, Utah, January 15, 2017 -- This EDGE project was completed by becoming a basketball
coach for 3rd and 4th grade students. The practices and games took place in Cedar City, UT at the
Cedar City Recreation center. Practices were every week starting at 7PM, and there were 1-2 games
every Saturday. This project was used for building teamwork among the players as well as learning the
fundamentals of basketball.
Throughout the year players were taught new skills every week. The first few practices were an
assessment of the players and to evaluate their skill level. After 2 practices players began to learn new
skills such as various positions to hold the ball and what their options were once they received a pass
such as pass, shoot, or dribble.
After learning different skills practices began to turn into a scrimmage in the middle of the practice. In
these scrimmages players learned how to work as a team. The first practice players would hold the
ball, dribble it in and than shoot the ball. Because they were not using team work on their own the
coaches decided to have them pass the ball at least two times before taking a shot. This forced them
to use their teammates and the teamwork showed in games.
After the games some parents would come up to the coaches and voice their appreciation of their
childs improvement on the court. One father said, Braden has really shown improvement over the
year, his dribbling and shooting has improved dramatically.
