setting (time or place).
Students achieving at grade level expectations will create their own Emerald City that includes time and place.
Students achieving above grade level expectations will create their own Emerald City that includes time, place
and characters.
3 Assessment/Monitoring Learning:

Type of Assessment (describe):

The type of assessment used will be a checklist for monitoring student understanding. The checklist will be based
on a rating scale from 1 to 3.

Monitoring of Progress: (describe)

Monitoring of progress will occur during review of previous learning, during the whole group discussion and
during the activity portion of the lesson.
*List any special accommodations or modifications in the learning plan required by student needs.
Students achieving above grade level expectations will write their descriptive sentence without any spelling
assistance. Students achieving below grade level expectations will be able to have their sentence transcribed by
the teacher for them to copy down.

Why have you chosen this approach for assessment?

I have chosen this approach because I can use their Emerald City creations to rate how well they
comprehended time, place and characters and if they were able to use them in a correct context.

4 Central Focus
Students will continue identifying the story elements
including, setting, character, plot and key details through the
story, The Wizard of Oz.

Students will be asked to identify the main character of the story.

Students will watch a movie clip of Somewhere over the Rainbow.
Students will be asked to think about a place where they would go to escape their worries and fears.
Students will write at least 2 sentences describing their dream world.
Students will decorate their Emerald Cities.

Why have you chosen these strategies/methods?

I have chosen these strategies because we have talked about setting and characters before and
these methods ask the students to access their knowledge on a higher level. They need to take
their knowledge of setting and characters and create their own. This is accessing a much higher
level of thinking than we have done previously with the story elements.

Closure/Conclusion:
Students will be asked to share with the class what they created and describe what is in their Emerald City.
*List any special accommodations or modifications in the learning plan required by student needs.
Students achieving above grade level expectations will write their descriptive sentence without any spelling

the teacher for them to copy down.

Central Focus:
This lesson focused on setting and was well accomplished. The students were very engaged with the story and were
able to apply setting in their own way. The focus will continue in tomorrows lesson with a focus on characters.
Learning Experience Plan:
Picture on the SmartBoard caught the students attention right away. Many of them knew what to expect and started
singing the songs. They were successfully motivated to begin the lesson. The process of the lesson was successful and I
was able to accomplish a read aloud, movie clip viewing, writing and illustrating in one 50-minute lesson. This was
extremely multimodal and allowed students to explore setting in a variety of ways.
Supporting Learning Plan:
The materials were successful and aided in the lesson. I was able to meet the needs of the students achieving below and
the students achieving above grade level expectations
Assessment/Monitoring Learning:
My rating scale worked well when assessing the students work after the lesson was finished. I could look at their
completed product and tell whether they achieved one, two or three story elements and to what extent they
comprehended them.

Special Accommodations or Modifications in the Learning Experience Plan, Supporting Learning, or

Assessment/Monitoring required by student needs.
I was able to write out words to help Antonija get going on her writing. I was also able to encourage certain students to
write more or stretch what they had written. Overall, it was a very successful lesson.
