In 5th Grade

Reading: Students are currently working in a Historical Fiction book club. Each group has
created a plan and established a number of pages to read each week. These dates & page
numbers are written in their agenda on the day the pages are due; the day students will meet
and discuss the book. As a class we will also be reading a Historical Fiction text called Blood
on the River and diving into how the author emerges fiction with a true historical time period.
We will track our characters interactions with each other but also how the time period affects
our characters. The students book club packets & finished book are due February 15th. It is
important that students do not read past their designated pages.
Writing: We will be finishing up our argumentative essays and going into preparing for our
debates. Students will be preparing counter arguments for their debate and completing
research to anticipate the opposing teams arguments. Every student will be responsible for
being part of the debate and talking.

Math: Students have begun studying decimals and percent. This relates closely
to our study of fractions. Our Quarter 2 test will be Wednesday, January 18th.
Science We have begun our unit on Weather. This unit will last approximately 5
weeks. We will be covering layers of the atmosphere, air masses and fronts,
clouds, and severe storms. This unit is very vocabulary heavy. Please encourage
your child to study their vocabulary nightly. All vocabulary and Quizlets have
already been added to the Weebly for students to use.
