The Second Sunday of Ordinary Time
Greetings of peace. This weekend we are grateful for the life of Martin Luther King. Courage and steadfastness
are traits that all of us need in our life of the Spirit. Dr. King set a great example for us.
One of the things that I am noticing lately is that housing in the city of Boston is dominating more and more of
my conversation with people. Every type of housing has a different set of concerns: housing for refugees, for
immigrants, for working people, for the homeless, for the poor, for the middle class and for the wealthy. The
Catholic approach is, of course, that every person is made in the image and likeness of God, so every person is
worthy of a home of some kind.
Boston is an economically dynamic city in a rather unforgiving meteorological climate, so the issues around
housing and shelter are more complex than they might be in other parts of the country. I also think that
Bostonians are more compassionate toward the poor than are people in other parts of the country. (Witness our
partners at St. Francis House and the terrific work that they do.)
One thing that Ive learned over the years of working with the homeless is that everyones story is different. We
have in this group the full spectrum of people: the physically ill, the mentally ill, the unlucky, the addicted, the
unskilled, those who are alienated from their families, and, yes, even some tricksters here and there as well.
Interestingly enough, all of those groups also exist within the demographic of people who have homes!
Several people have come to me recently with concrete proposals of actions that we as a faith community might
undertake in order to assist on the issue of housing in Boston. Some of these proposals have offers of funding
attached to them. Other proposals are driven by increasingly desperate needs of particular groups. If you have
any such proposal, or you would like to help someone else implement their proposal, know that I am very
interested in hearing from you. Id like to gather some of the different kinds of talent that exists within our faith
community to move toward some modest solutions.
Right now the Shrine isnt equipped to help a particular person with a housing issue. We dont give money for
rent; we dont shelter people overnight. But there more than enough connected, bright people here at the Shrine
that I believe that we can influence and move an agenda.
Solutions can come to fruition via a number of different paths. We should be open to all of the different possible
ways that a solution presents itself, whether it be via the Spirit, politics, community-organizing, networking,
volunteering, or something else that we cant envision right now.
If you have an idea about housing in Boston, and how the Shrine might help, please contact me at
tconway@stanthonyshrine.org or 617-426-0623.
Have a blessed week!
