This booklet contains the Order for the celebration of both Low
Mass and Solemn High Mass and is designed to be used in
conjunction with our Sunday parish bulletin. You will find the
Propers for the Day there. These are the Collects, Epistle, and
Gospel, as well as the brief Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, and
Communion Verses. In addition to the texts of High and Low Mass,
this booklet includes a variety of explanatory notes provided to
enhance your understanding of the Churchs worship. A glance at
the Guide found on the next page will answer questions you may
have and enable you to participate more fully in the Liturgy. This
booklet also includes personal prayers for use before and after
Mass. If you would like to purchase a copy of this booklet for
yourself, please speak to the Priest

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LOW MASS

AND A SOLEMN HIGH MASS?
A Low Mass is a Mass at which no music is sung; one Priest is
most often assisted by a single acolyte, and usually no sermon is
preached. At a Solemn High Mass many acolytes assist the
Priest, Deacon and Subdeacon (when the three serve together at
High Mass they are called the Sacred Ministers), incense is used,
most of the Mass is chanted, and a sermon is preached. Besides
these a Pontifical Mass is one over which a Bishop presides; a
Sung Mass or Missa cantata incorporates some elements of
Solemn Mass, without the Deacon and Subdeacon and the full
complete ceremonial; and a Requiem Mass is a Mass offered on
behalf of the Dead.

Worship at Our Savior

The Mass Vestments

Anglican Church of Our Savior is a parish church with her roots set
firmly in the Catholic tradition of Anglicanism. Our worship is
centered around the Holy Eucharist (the Mass), continuing in the
Tradition we have received from the Apostles, to whom the Lord
JESUS was "known in the breaking of the bread." Our worship is
that of traditional western Catholicism, with a uniquely Anglican
flavor. The ancient chant, the medieval vestments and the
Elizabethan language may make our worship seem a bit strange to
those unfamiliar with it, but these things are not irrelevant or oldfashioned. For 2000 years the Church, in her worship, has
encountered JESUS Christ. The solemn ceremonial of the Mass,
the veil of incense which fills the Church during the liturgy, and the
stately cadences of the Book of Common Prayer speak to us (as
they have spoken to many generations of our ancestors in the
Faith) of the glory and majesty of God. It is to God the Holy Trinity,
the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, that our worship is
directed. The purpose of worship is not to entertain or inform us,
but to turn ourselves, our souls and bodies to God. So if the Mass
seems a bit strange to you, relax. Sit through it if you're curious.
You may catch a glimpse, even if just for a moment, of heaven.

The Amice is made of linen, covers the neck and shoulders

and ties around the waist. In Roman times it was a kerchief.
The priest prays this prayer as he puts it on: "Place, O Lord,
the helmet of salvation on my head to repel the assaults of
the devil."

The Alb -- is a full, white garment reaching to the ankles. It

is the tunic, the daily wear, of ancient Romans. Reminiscent
of the baptismal gown, it's a symbol of purity. Donning it, the
priest prays: "Cleanse me, O Lord, and purify my heart, that,
being made white in the blood of the Lamb, I may attain
everlasting joy,"

The Cincture (or Girdle) -- holds the alb in place and

symbolizes chastity and discipline. The accompanying
prayer is: "Gird me, O Lord, with the girdle of purity and
quench in me the fire of concupiscence that the grace of
temperance and chastity may abide in me."

The Maniple -- is a small band of material circling the priest's

left wrist. It was originally worn by the deacons over their
arms and used to wipe the mouths of those who drank from
the chalice. It's a symbol of service. Putting it on, the priest
says: "Grant me, O Lord, to bear the light burden of grief
and sorrow, that I may with gladness take the reward of my
labor."

The Stole -- is a long band of the same material as the

maniple and chasuble. It was originally a badge of political
office in Imperial times. Today it is a symbol of priestly
office. The priest prays this prayer when he puts it on: "Give
me again, O Lord, the robe of immortality, which I lost
through the transgression of my first parents and my own sin.
And although I am unworthy to come to Thy holy Sacrament,
grant that I may attain everlasting joy."

The Chasuble -- was originally an outdoor cloak in Roman

times, often waterproofed. It has a hole in the middle for the
head and rests on the shoulders, hanging to the knees. It is
worn only during the celebration of the Mass and
emphasizes the sacrificial character of the priesthood. It is
the final vestment the priest puts on and as he does he
prays: O Lord who hast said My yoke is easy and My burden
is light, grant that I may so bear it as to attain Thy grace.

The Dalmatic and Tunicle -- are worn by the Deacon and

Subdeacon respectively at Mass. The Dalmatic was worn as
"formal attire" during Imperial times. The Tunicle is an
adaptation of the Dalmatic. As each is donned the wearer
says: "O Lord, clothe me with the garment of salvation, and
cover me with the robe of righteousness."

The Sacred Vessels and Linens

The Corporal -- a square of linen on which the chalice and

paten are placed during Mass.

The Purificator a piece of linen used to clean ("purify") the

chalice.

The Pall -- a stiff linen covering for the chalice to prevent

anything from falling (or flying) into the chalice.

The Chalice -- a cup of precious metal in which the wine to

be consecrated is poured, and from which we receive the
Blood of Christ.

The Paten a small plate of precious metal which holds the

Host.

The Burse a container for the Corporal before and after

Mass. The Chalice Veil -- covers the chalice before and after
Mass.

The Ciborium a container of precious metal in which

consecrated Hosts are stored. The ciborium is kept locked
in the tabernacle when not in use during Mass.
Monstrance -- a specially made receptacle for the Blessed
Sacrament in which the Host is exposed for public adoration.

The Church Year

We live with several calendars: academic, financial, seasonal, and
so on. The Church has a calendar of its own, focusing on our Lord
and His Kingdom. Eight seasons, of varying lengths, help us to do
that. The Churchs Year begins, not in January, but at the end of
November with Advent. Here is the Churchs yearly cycle:
Advent begins the end of November and runs until
Christmas Eve. Two ideas dominate the Season: the
return of Christ as Judge and the coming of Christ as
the Child of Bethlehem. The liturgical color of Advent
is purple
Christmas the Christmas Season is made up of the
famous Twelve Days of Christmas from December
25th until January 6th. During this joyful Season we
celebrate Christs coming to redeem us. Its liturgical
color is white.
Epiphany the Feast of Epiphany (and the week that
follows) is called The Manifestation of Christ to the
Gentiles. It commemorates the visit of the Wise Men
to the Christ child. The Epiphanytide Season can last
up to six weeks. The color of the Feast is white, and
the seasonal color is green.
The Gesima Sundays the three weeks before Lent
- Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima,
are not really a Season at all, but a preparatory period
before the beginning of Lent.
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, usually sometime
in February. It is a penitential time when we
especially emphasize spiritual growth. The liturgical
color is violet.

Passiontide makes up the last two weeks of Lent

immediately before Easter. The second week of
Passiontide is Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
The color of Passiontide is violet, though sometimes
red is used.
Easter the Feast of the Resurrection of Christ is the
center of the Churchs year. Eastertide is a six-week
period running until Whitsunday. Its color is white.
Whitsunday or its older name, Pentecost, celebrates
the Descent of the Holy Ghost on the Disciples. It is
sometimes called the birthday of the Church. Its
color is red.
Trinitytide begins with Trinity Sunday (usually
sometime in early June) and lasts until the next
Advent. The season emphasizes the importance of
the Kingdom of God. It runs about twenty-six weeks,
and is the longest Season of the Church Year. The
liturgical color of Trinitytide is green.
The first part of the Church Year, from Advent through Eastertide,
centers on the life of Christ which gave us salvation. The second
part, Whitsuntide and Trinitytide, focuses on Christs life in us: in His
Church and especially in His Saints. The Church Year is not merely
an aid to remember the past. The Church Calendar is a liturgical
calendar: it has a sacramental character. Following the calendar
and keeping its Feasts, we dont simply recall the past; through the
mystery of the Liturgy, we ourselves participate in the events of our
salvation. The Church Year points us to Christ and guided by it we
share His Life and Kingdom.

Ceremonial Actions
Our bodies and souls are united. What my body does has an
impact on my soul. This is what the Church means when she says
that we are sacramental beings. Our worship involves both our
bodies and souls. We kneel when praying or as a sign of humility
and penitence. We stand to offer praise to God. We sit while
listening to the proclamation of Gods Word (though we stand while
the Holy Gospel is read out of reverence for the Words of Christ).
Here are some other ceremonial actions we use in our worship:

the Sign of the Cross. Immediately before the

proclamation of the Gospel at Mass (as the words the
continuation of the Holy Gospel . . . are being said),
we use our thumbs to trace three small crosses, first
on our forehead, then over our lips, and finally over
our hearts. Doing so we ask God to cleanse our
minds, our lips, and our hearts to hear His Words. In
this booklet, the times it is customary to make the Sign
of the Cross are marked with a small cross: a

Bows - we bow when the processional cross or the

celebrant at Mass pass us during processions; we
also bow our heads when the name of JESUS our
Lord, or our Lady MARY, or the Saint whose day is
being celebrated, is said during the Liturgy.
Genuflections - we genuflect (touch the right knee to
the floor and immediately stand - from the Latin genu knee and flectare - to bend) when we enter or
leave our pews or pass by the altar where the Blessed
Sacrament is kept. We genuflect during the recitation
of the Nicene Creed at the words And was incarnate
by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made
man honoring the Incarnation of God. We also
genuflect during processions of the Blessed
Sacrament as it passes by, and when a bishop passes
in procession to ask his blessing.
Sign of the Cross - we make the Sign of the Cross
frequently in worship (and at other times, such as
when praying, before and after meals, etc.). It is
made by touching the fingers of the open-palmed
hand first to the forehead, then straight down to the
middle of the breast (around the sternum), then to the
left breast (over the heart), and then to the right
breast. The Sign should be made deliberately and not
carelessly. Its a type of physical prayer. It is often
said that we are blessing ourselves when we make

Receiving Holy Communion

Personal Prayers Before Mass

We welcome all baptized and practicing Christians to join us in the

reception of Holy Communion. Anglican practice and Catholic
Tradition teach us that baptism and confirmation by a bishop in
succession to the Apostles are among the requirements for a
regular and frequent reception of Holy Communion. We should not
only be free from serious sin (the remedy for serious sin is a sincere
confession), but be in love and charity with our neighbors.
Directions for receiving Holy Communion may be found on page 58
under the heading of Counsels for Communicants. For those who
are able to do so, ancient practice directs us to receive the Blessed
Sacrament fasting.

The celebration of the Mass is the central act of the Church's life
here on earth. It both defines and directs the Church. As it is
central to our common Christian life, it also has a central place in
our personal lives as Christians. It is therefore most appropriate
that, before we celebrate these Holy Mysteries, we prepare
ourselves. The following prayers are intended to provide some help
in your personal preparation.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost. Amen.
O great and good God, I have come into Thy presence to share in
offering to Thee the great Sacrifice of Thy Blessed Son, our
Saviour, JESUS Christ (and to receive the Holy Sacrament of the
Body and Blood of the same JESUS Christ) in remembrance of His
life, death and Passion, and in thanksgiving for all Thy blessings
bestowed upon Thy whole Church and on me a most unworthy
sinner. I desire to offer (and to receive) with all the love and
contrition of which I am capable, in conformity with those sacred
intentions wherewith our Saviour instituted and our holy Mother the
Church ever offers it. I wish, then, to offer (and to receive) it:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

For Thy greater glory;

For the continual remembrance of the Sacrifice of Christ;
To give Thee thanks for all the blessings Thou hast
bestowed, especially .....
To ask Thy help in any matter I have in hand, and especially
.....
To ask Thee to bless all my friends and relations, especially
.....
For the dead, especially .....

Bless the Priest who is to preside at this oblation. Bless all the
people who are here to participate in this glorious action, and all
who would like to be here. Convert all sinners. Heal the anguish
of the world. And have mercy upon all the faithful departed.

O God accept all my prayers during this holy service of our

bounden duty, for JESUS Christ's sake. Amen.

A PRE-COMMUNION PRAYER OF
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
Almighty, everlasting God, lo, I draw nigh to the Sacrament of Thine
only-begotten Son, our Lord JESUS Christ. I draw nigh as one sick,
to the Physician of life; unclean, to the Fountain of mercy; blind, to
the Light of eternal brightness; poor and needy, to the Lord of
heaven and earth. I implore, therefore, the abundance of Thine
exceeding bounty, that Thou wouldest vouchsafe to heal my
sickness, to wash my defilements, to enlighten my blindness, to
enrich my poverty, and to clothe my nakedness; and that I may
receive the Bread of Angels, the King of kings, and Lord of lords,
with such reverence and humility, such contrition and devotion,
such purity and faith, and with such purpose and intention, as shall
be expedient for the health of my soul. Grant me, I beseech Thee,
that I may receive not only the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of
the Lord, but also the substance and virtue of the Sacrament. O
most merciful God, grant me to receive the Body of Thine onlybegotten Son our Lord JESUS Christ, which He took of the Virgin
Mary, that I may be worthy to be incorporated into His mystical
Body and accounted among His members. O most loving Father,
grant me, that Thy beloved Son, whom I now purpose to receive
veiled from sight, I may at length behold forever face to face. Who
liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever,
one God, world without end. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR THOSE ABOUT TO COMMUNICATE

BY ST. SYMEON THE TRANSLATOR
Behold, I approach Divine Communion;
O Maker, burn me not as I partake,
For Fire art Thou which burneth the unworthy.
But purify Thou me of every stain.
Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, receive me today as a
communicant; for I will not speak of the Mystery to Thine enemies;
nor will I give Thee a kiss as did Judas; but like the thief do I
confess Thee: Remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom.
Tremble, O man, as thou beholdest the deifying Blood,
For it is a burning coal consuming the unworthy.
The Body of God both deifieth and nourisheth me;
It deifieth the spirit and wondrously nourisheth the heart.

DECLARATION OF INTENTION BEFORE MASS

I intend to assist at this celebration of the Mass and the
consecration of the Body and Blood of our Lord JESUS Christ, and
to receive the same Body and Blood according to the rite of Holy
Church, to the praise of Almighty God, and of the whole Church
triumphant; for my own benefit, for the benefit of the whole Church
militant and expectant; for all who have commended themselves to
my prayers in general and in particular, ..... and for the good estate
of the Holy Catholic Church.

15

- Low Mass It is an ancient and laudable custom for us to bow our heads
whenever the name of JESUS (and, by extension, that of our Lady
MARY or the particular Saint whose feast is being celebrated that
day) is mentioned. Whenever the Lord's name or that of our Lady
occurs in this booklet, it appears in capital letters to call this practice
to mind.

THE OFFERTORY PRAYERS

The Priest prays quietly,
Priest:

Receive, O Holy Father, Almighty and Everlasting

God, this spotless Host, which I thine unworthy
servant now offer unto Thee, my God, the living and
the true, for all my countless sins, wickedness and
neglect, for all here present, as for all the faithful in
Christ, both the quick and the dead: that it may set
forward both their salvation and mine unto life
everlasting.
O God, who didst wondrously create, and even more
wondrously dost renew the dignity and nature of
man; grant through the mystery of this water and
wine, that He Who was partaker of our humanity,
may make us partakers of His Divinity, even JESUS
Christ Thy Son our Lord, who with Thee, in the unity
of the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth God, world
without end.
We offer unto Thee, O Lord, the Cup of Salvation,
beseeching Thee, that it may ascend before Thee as
a sweet-smelling savour to set forward both our
salvation, and that of all the whole world.
With a contrite heart and a humble spirit, let us be
accepted by Thee, O Lord: And so let our sacrifice
this day be well-pleasing in Thy sight.
Come, Holy Ghost, Almighty, Everlasting God, and
bless this sacrifice made ready for thy Holy Name.
Receive, O Holy Trinity, this oblation which we offer
unto Thee in memory of the Passion, Resurrection
and Ascension of JESUS Christ our Lord: In honor
of blessed MARY ever-Virgin, of blessed John
Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all
Thy Saints: That it may be to their honor and to our

And we most humbly beseech Thee, of Thy
goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all those
who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow,
need, sickness, or any other adversity (pray silently
for those in need and remember your own
intentions), and especially those we remember today
before Thee.

THE CANON OF THE MASS

Priest:

All glory be to Thee, Almighty God, our heavenly

Father, for that Thou, of Thy tender mercy, didst give
Thine only Son JESUS Christ to suffer death upon
the Cross for our redemption; Who made there (by
His one oblation of Himself once offered) a full,
perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and
satisfaction for the sins of the whole world;
And did institute, and in His Holy Gospel command
us to continue, a perpetual memory of that His
precious Death and Sacrifice, until His coming
again:
For in the night in which He was betrayed, He took
bread; and when He had given thanks, He brake it,
and gave it to His disciples, saying, Take, eat,
THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU.
Do this in remembrance of Me.
Likewise after supper, He took the cup; and when
He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying,
Drink ye all of this:
FOR THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW
TESTAMENT WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU AND
FOR MANY FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS:
Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of
Me.
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according
to the institution of Thy dearly beloved Son our
Saviour JESUS Christ, we, Thy humble servants, do
celebrate and make here before Thy Divine Majesty,
with these Thy Holy Gifts, which we now offer unto
Thee, the memorial Thy Son hath commanded us to

28

make; having in remembrance His blessed Passion

and precious Death, His mighty Resurrection and
glorious Ascension; rendering unto Thee most
hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured
unto us by the same.
And we most humbly beseech Thee, O merciful
Father, to hear us; and, of Thy almighty goodness,
vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with Thy Word and
Holy Spirit, these Thy gifts and creatures of Bread
and Wine; that we, receiving them according to Thy
Son our Saviour JESUS Christ's holy institution, in
remembrance of His Death and Passion, may be
partakers of His most blessed Body and Blood.
And we earnestly desire Thy fatherly goodness,
mercifully to accept this our Sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching Thee to
grant that, by the merits and death of Thy Son
JESUS Christ, and through faith in His Blood, we,
and all Thy whole Church, may obtain remission of
our sins, and all other benefits of His Passion.
And here we offer and present unto Thee, O Lord,
ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable,
holy and living sacrifice unto Thee; humbly
beseeching Thee, that we, and all others who shall
be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily
receive the most precious Body and Blood of Thy
Son JESUS Christ, be filled with Thy Grace a and
heavenly benediction, and made one body with Him,
that He may dwell in us, and we in Him.
Remember, Lord, also the souls of Thy servants and
handmaidens, which are gone before us in the mark
of faith, and who rest in the sleep of peace. (We
pause in silence for a moment and each person
remembers before the Lord the faithful departed.)
We beseech Thee, O Lord, that unto them, and unto

29

all such as rest in Christ, Thou wilt grant a place of

refreshment, of light, and of peace.
And vouchsafe unto us Thy servants, hoping of the
multitude of Thy mercies, some portion and
fellowship with Thy holy Apostles and Martyrs; with
John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius,
Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua,
Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all
Thy Saints: Within whose fellowship we beseech
Thee to admit us.

of the blessed and glorious ever-Virgin MARY,

Mother of God, with Thy holy Apostles Peter and
Paul, with Andrew, and all Thy Saints, grant peace
graciously in our days, that we, being holpen by the
succour of Thy mercy, may ever be both free from
sin, and safe from all disquietude ...

THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS

All:

We do not presume to come to this Thy Table, O

merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but
in Thy manifold and great mercies. We are not
worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under
Thy Table. But Thou art the same Lord, Whose
property is always to have mercy: Grant us
therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the Flesh of Thy
dear Son JESUS Christ, and to drink His Blood, that
our sinful bodies may be made clean by His Body,
and our souls washed through His most precious
Blood, and that we may evermore dwell in Him, and
He in us. Amen.
Turning to the People and elevating the
Sacrament, the Priest says,

Priest:
All:

Behold the Lamb of God; behold Him that taketh

away the sins of the world.
Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldest come
under my roof, but speak the word only and my soul
shall be healed. (Repeat three times.)

THE HOLY COMMUNION

If you are a baptized and practicing Christian, you are invited to this
Holy Sacrament to share in the Body and Blood of the Lord. If you
have any questions about receiving the Blessed Sacrament, please
see "Counsels for Communicants" on p. 58 of this booklet.

THE ABLUTIONS
When all have communicated, the Priest returns to the Altar where
he either reverently consumes any of the consecrated elements that
remain or places the remainder in the tabernacle and cleanses the
Sacred Vessels. The Communion is the climax of the Sacrifice and
the service is brought to an end.

The Lord be with you.

And with thy spirit.
The beginning of the Holy Gospel according to St.
John.
Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God. The same was in
the beginning with God. All things were made by
Him; and without Him was not anything made that
was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light
of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the
darkness comprehended it not. There was a man
sent from God, whose name was John. The same
came for witness, to bear witness of the Light, that
all men through him might believe. He was not that
Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man
that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and
the world was made by Him, and the world knew him
not. He came unto His own, and His own received
Him not. But as many as received Him, to them
gave He the power to become the sons of God,
even to them that believe on His Name; which were
born, not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the
will of man, but of God. (genuflect) AND THE
WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us,
and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Thanks be to God.

- Solemn High Mass It is an ancient and laudable custom for us to bow our heads
whenever the name of JESUS (and, by extension, that of our Lady
MARY or the particular saint whose feast is being celebrated that
day) is mentioned. Whenever the Lord's name or that of our Lady
occurs in this booklet, it appears in capital letters to call this practice
to mind.
Personal Prayers of Preparation before Mass begin on page 13 of
this booklet.

THE PRELUDE
THE ASPERGES
The Asperges is our reminder of baptism. The Sacred Ministers
pass among the Clergy and People, aspersing (sprinkling) them
with Holy Water. The People kneel as they pass and make the sign
of the Cross as they are aspersed. It was through baptism that
each of us became a Christian. This weekly blessing calls that to
mind, and prepares us for the reception of the other great
Sacrament, Holy Communion.

Father, for that Thou, of Thy tender mercy, didst give
Thine only Son JESUS Christ to suffer death upon
the Cross for our redemption; Who made there (by
His one oblation of Himself once offered) a full,
perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and
satisfaction for the sins of the whole world;
And did institute, and in His Holy Gospel command
us to continue, a perpetual memory of that His
precious Death and Sacrifice, until His coming
again:
For in the night in which He was betrayed, He took
Bread; and when He had given thanks, He brake it,
and gave it to His disciples, saying, Take, eat,
THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU;
Do this in remembrance of Me.

46

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according

to the institution of Thy dearly beloved Son our
Saviour JESUS Christ, we, Thy humble servants, do
celebrate and make here before Thy Divine Majesty,
with these Thy Holy Gifts, which we now offer unto
Thee, the memorial Thy Son hath commanded us to
make; having in remembrance His blessed Passion
and precious Death, His mighty Resurrection and
glorious Ascension; rendering unto Thee most
hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured
unto us by the same.

47

And here we offer and present unto Thee, O Lord,

ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable,
holy and living sacrifice unto Thee; humbly
beseeching Thee, that we, and all others who shall
be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily
receive the most precious Body and Blood of Thy
Son JESUS Christ, be filled with Thy Grace and
heavenly benediction, and made one body with Him,
that He may dwell in us, and we in Him.
Remember, O Lord, also the souls of Thy servants
and handmaidens, which are gone before us in the
mark of faith, and who rest in the sleep of peace.
(We pause in silence for a moment and each person
remembers before the Lord the faithful departed.)
We beseech Thee, O Lord, that unto them, and unto
all such as rest in Christ, Thou wilt grant a place of
refreshment, of light, and of peace.
And vouchsafe unto us thy servants some portion
and fellowship with Thy holy Apostles and Martyrs;
with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius,
Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua,
Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all
Thy Saints: Within whose fellowship we beseech
Thee to admit us.
And although we are unworthy, through our manifold
sins, to offer unto Thee any sacrifice; yet we
beseech Thee to accept this our bounden duty and
service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our
offenses, through JESUS Christ our Lord;
By Whom, and with Whom and in Whom, in the unity
of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto
Thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER & LIBERA NOS

Priest:

Let us pray. And now, as our Saviour hath taught

us, we are bold to say, our Father ...

All:

Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy

Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses. As we forgive those who
trespass against us.
And lead us not into
temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Priest:

Deliver us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, from all evils,

past, present, and to come: And at the intercession
of the blessed and glorious Ever-Virgin MARY,
Mother of God, with that of Thy holy Apostles Peter
and Paul, with Andrew, and all Thy Saints, favorably
grant peace in our day, that by the help of Thy
mercy, we may ever be kept free from sin, and safe
from all disquietude.

THE FRACTION & PAX

The Fraction is the Breaking of the Bread. In it Christ's Death is
mystically represented in the Breaking of His Body. After the
Fraction and immediately before the Pax, a small particle of the
consecrated Host is dropped into the chalice. This joining of the
Sacramental Elements is a sign of our Lords Resurrection. The
Pax follows.

THE AGNUS DEI

THE HOLY COMMUNION

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy
upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of
the world, grant us thy peace.

If you are Baptized and a practicing Christian, you are invited to this
Holy Sacrament to share in the Body and Blood of the Lord. If you
have any questions on receiving the Blessed Sacrament, please
see "Counsels for Communicants" on p. 58 of this booklet. When
you receive the Blessed Sacrament the Words of Administration will
be said. Declare your belief by saying: Amen.

THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS,

ECCE & DOMINE NON SUM DIGNUS

Blood, and that we may evermore dwell in Him, and
He in us. Amen.
Turning to the People and elevating the Sacrament,
the Priest says,

Priest:

Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him that takest

away the sins of the world.

All:

Lord I am not worthy that Thou shouldest come

under my roof, but speak the word only and my soul
shall be healed. (3 times)

THE RECESSIONAL HYMN (stand)

THE POSTLUDE

Personal Prayers after Mass

Grant, O Lord, that we who are Thy soldiers here may enjoy Thy
peace hereafter; that the eyes which have looked upon Thee in Thy
Sacrament of love may also behold the fruition of Thy blessed
hope; that the tongues which have sung Thy praises may also
speak the truth; that the feet which have stood in Thy sanctuary
may walk in the land of light; and that the bodies which have
feasted on Thy living Body may be restored in newness of life, to
dwell with Thee where Thou reigneth with the Father, and the Holy
Ghost, in the Unity of the Godhead, King for evermore. Amen.
Behold, O Eternal Father, the Sacrifice of the Mass is done. May
it be acceptable to Thee, inasmuch as in it Thy Son, in whom Thou
art ever well pleased, is set forth before Thee. May he now, I
beseech Thee, perform the office of a Mediator and Advocate,
where He sitteth at thy right hand, and maketh intercession for us.
Remember all His patience, love, and pity; and vouchsafe to listen
to one who prayeth in the Name of Thy beloved Son; for He Himself
hath said, If ye shall ask anything in My Name, He will give it to you.
This one thing I ask, O Lord, let this Sacrifice be well pleasing to
Thee, to the glory of Thy Name; and may it be profitable to the
salvation of all Thy faithful servants. Amen.

A PRAYER OF ST. SYMEON THE TRANSLATOR

Thou Who givest me willingly as nourishment Thy Flesh,
Thou Who art fire, and dost consume the unworthy,
Scorch me not, O my Maker,
But rather pass through me for the right ordering of my members,
Into all my joints, my reins, and my heart.
Burn up the thorns of all mine offences.
Purify my soul; sanctify my mind;
Enlighten the simple unity of my five senses.
Nail down the whole of me with Thy fear.
Ever shelter, guard, and keep me
From every soul-corrupting deed and word.
Purify, and cleanse, and order me aright;
Make me comely, give me understanding, and enlighten me.
Show me forth as the habitation of the only Spirit,
And no longer as a habitation of sin,
That as Thine abode from the entrance in of Thy Communion
Every evil and passion may flee from me like fire.
As intercessors I bring to Thee all the sanctified:
The heavenly ranks of Angels,
Thy Forerunner, the wise Apostles,
And Thy pure and spotless Mother.
The prayers of these receive, O compassionate Christ,
And make of me who worship Thee a child of light.
For Thou alone art our sanctification, O Good One,
And the illumination of our souls;
And to Thee, as to our God and Master, we, each day,
As is fitting, all send up glory.

A POST-COMMUNION PRAYER OF
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
I render Thee thanks, O holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting
God, Who hast vouchsafed, not for any deserts of mine, but only
out of the condescension of Thy mercy, to feed me a sinner, thine
unworthy servant, with the precious Body and Blood of Thy Son our
Lord JESUS Christ. I pray Thee that this Holy Communion may not
bring guilt upon me to condemnation, but may intercede for me to
my pardon and salvation. Let it be to me an armour of faith, and a
shield of good purpose; a riddance of all vices; an extermination of
evil desires and longings; an increase of love and patience, of
humility and obedience, and of all virtues; a firm defense against
the wiles of my enemies, visible and invisible; a perfect quieting of
all my impulses, fleshly and spiritual; a firm adherence to Thee the
one true God; and a blessed consummation of my end. And I also
pray Thee, that Thou wouldest vouchsafe to bring me a sinner to
that ineffable feast where Thou, with Thy Son and the Holy Spirit,
art to Thy holy ones true light, full satiety, everlasting joy, pleasure
consummated, the perfect happiness. Through the same JESUS
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Counsels for Communicants

Three times a year is the very least that any Christian should
receive Holy Communion. A good rule is to receive once a week,
on a Sunday or other day. The ideal is daily Communion.
It is a sacrilege to receive Holy Communion when one is in a state
of serious sin. In order to avoid this, we are commanded by St.
Paul to examine ourselves before receiving. If there is any serious
doubt as to our spiritual condition, we should go to Confession.
In receiving Holy Communion, follow these simple rules:
1.
2.

3.
4.

5.

6.

Women should remove lipstick before going to the altar.

Genuflect in the aisle on leaving your pew and not again. Do
not genuflect at the rail or after your Communion. Keep your
eyes down and your hands joined or folded in going to and
from the altar.
Kneel upright at the rail without leaning over.
Receive the Lord's Body in one of these two ways:
a.
Into the palm of your right hand, making the left hand
a support for the right, the hands lifted as high as the
lips. NEVER TAKE THE HOST INTO YOUR
FINGERS. Raise your hands with extreme care and
consume the Host as soon as it is given to you. If
you wish to receive by intinction (the Priest dipping
the Host into the Chalice and placing it on your
tongue), simply leave the Host in your hand and the
Priest will take it from you, dip it into the Chalice and
place it upon your tongue.
b.
Directly on your tongue. Tip your head back and
extend your tongue over your lower teeth. As soon
as the Priest has put the Host on your tongue,
withdraw the tongue and close the mouth.
Receive the Chalice by guiding it to your lips with your right
hand. Take a modest sip of the Precious Blood. Do not
wipe your mouth after receiving the Chalice.
Leave the rail as soon as the person on your left has
received the Chalice.

58

7.

Return to your place and kneel quietly, beginning your

prayers of praise and thanksgiving for the great Gift you have
received.

It is the plain and ancient teaching of the Church -- declared in the

Scriptures, expounded by the Fathers and affirmed by the
Ecumenical Councils -- that in the Sacrament of Holy Communion
we eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ under the forms of
Bread and Wine. St. John Chrysostom, a 4th century Archbishop
of Constantinople, described the Presence of Christ in Holy
Communion this way:
Not only do we see the Lord [in the Sacrament]: we take
Him in our hands, eat Him, put our teeth into His Flesh, and unite
ourselves to Him in the closest union.
At Holy Communion we receive Bread which is no longer
bread but the Flesh of Christ; we receive Wine which is no longer
wine but the Blood of Christ to our great and endless comfort as
the Prayer Book says. In this booklet you will find prayers from the
Church's tradition which will help you both to prepare for the
reception of Holy Communion before Mass, and to offer your thanks
after Mass for the Gifts which you have received.

Notes on Requiem Masses

A Requiem Mass is a Mass offered for the dead. There are a few
differences between a Requiem and other Masses:
1)

the Psalm during the Preparation is omitted;

2)

the response during the Agnus Dei is

changed;

3)

there is no blessing at the conclusion of the

Mass. Instead the Celebrant says May he
(or she or they) rest in peace.

Nothing we can do for the dead is more efficacious than offering the
Mass for them. We offer requiems at the time of their death; on the
third, seventh, and thirtieth days following the initial requiem we
offer further requiems on their behalf. We continue each year to
offer requiems on the anniversaries of their deaths. When we offer
requiems for the dead, we are showing our love for them and our
faith in Christ, Lord of the Living and the Dead.

Prayer to the Holy Trinity

Glory be to the Father,

Who by His almighty power and love created me, making me in
the image and likeness of God.
Eternal Father,
we humbly offer Thee our poor presence,
and that of the whole of humanity,
from the beginning
to the end of the world
at all the Masses
that ever have or ever will be prayed.
We offer Thee all the pains,
sufferings, prayers, sacrifices,
joys, and relaxations of our lives,
in union with those of our Lord Jesus here on earth.
May the Most Precious Blood of Christ,
all His Blood, Wounds,
and Agony save us,
through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Amen.

Glory be to the Son,

Who by His Precious Blood delivered me from hell, and opened
for me the gates of heaven.

Glory be to the Holy Spirit,

Who has sanctified me in the sacrament of Baptism, and
continues to sanctify me
by the graces I receive daily from His bounty.

Glory be to the Three adorable Persons of the Holy Trinity, now

and forever.
