Wasteful

Packaging Project

Businesses causing environmental issues?

-

Its known that the smog from cars cause environmental pollution but
what we dont pay attention to is, how much packaging from items
cause our environment to receive more waste that it really doesn't
need.
In our project, we investigated how much packaging is being used for
an item or a liquid, and if it was or not based on the volume/ size of our
object/ liquid.

~ We did this by solving ratios that included the surface area of the
packaging and the volume of the package ~
-

We determined that some companies waste packaging material that

isnt really needed.

What does wasteful mean?

-Disposing of something carelessly Or something that
is causing waste, destruction or devastation towards
the environment.
For Ex/ water bottles are wasteful in the
environment because the fragments of the water
bottle absorbs toxins that pollute our waterways,
contaminate soil, and sicken animals.
Extra Packaging from water bottles that isnt
needed is wasteful to our environment.

Ratio Measure
Comparing multiple amounts or quantities to each
other.
For Ex/ comparing the volume of a different shape
with another (triangular prism, rectangular prism,
etc).
In this case (Project), we use a ratio measure to see
the extra packaging that is left (SA vs. V)

Starbucks: 1.9

As, a team, we decided that a ratio that resulted in 1.20 and above
would be considered as, Wasteful. We think of 1.20 as a measure
that is a bit over packaged for its volume.

As environmental scientists and missionaries, our job was to

determine which water bottles created more waste for our
environment.
To do this, we compared the ratios (using the volumes and
overall SAs of our bottles).
In the end, we found out that the bottle that wasted more
packaging was in fact (comparing to all of them ), was the
starbucks venti cup.

How does size and shape affect ratio?

If its a different size and
shape, the volume will
either increase or decrease
making the surface area
increase or decrease at a
slower rate.
Size and shape affect ratio
because it lets us determine
how much packaging is left
over .

- Size and shape ultimately

affect ratio because it
determines how much of a
certain volume is leftover of
the packaging, making extra
a waste, since the product
did not come with the
packaging full to the rim.

Thank you ~
What we learned: Throughout this process, we not only
practiced our geometry skills, but we learned about how
much material businesses waste. We noticed that some of
the water bottles did leave a bit more waste of others, but in
the long water bottles dont leave much waste as other
products. Also, we discovered that 3/6 water bottles did not
waste excess packaging. Leaving us with a conclusion that
from the bottles that we measured, only half are affecting
our environment more than the other half .
