At this stage in the building design process, specific rooms are now located at reasonably certain locations
within the Imaging Suite on the Basement level. As the design progresses into detailed design, it is
recommended that the Owner arrange to retain professional engineering consultant(s) who have a
professional expertise in the design for electro-magnetic (EM), radio frequency (RF) and ionizing radiation
(X-Ray) shielding. Their role(s) are to analyze and assess the need for EM/RF or X-Ray shielding at
selected imaging equipment rooms within the Imaging Suite. The primary goal for these studies is to
determine the recommended scope and extent of EM/RF or ionizing radiation room shielding that needs to
be incorporated into the detailed architectural and engineering design.
The EM/RF study should include a pre-construction site analysis of the site, as well as an analysis of the
latest version of architectural floor plans. Furthermore, the EM/RF assessment should initially focus on the
general region where the Imaging Suite is to be located, including laboratories immediately above, nearby
mechanical and electrical rooms, elevators as well as any element nearby that is found exterior of the
building, near the Imaging Suite. Specific equipment that may require such shielding may include scanning
electron microscopes (SEM) and atomic force (AF) microscopes. Other additional sensitive microscopy
equipment may be identified by the Owners representatives during detailed discussion.
An industrial hygienist consultant, or other qualified professional consultant should be retained by the
Owner to determine the need for and recommended extent and detailed design concepts and strategies
required to safely shield the work areas where research equipment that produces Ionizing Radiation (XRays) will be placed. Specific equipment includes the CT-Scanners, proposed to be located within the
Imaging Suite on the basement level.
