D5-Services

Students will demonstrate an understanding of various services available to individuals with

disabilities and how to access those services in their local community.
I learned about the Drake counseling group on Facebook during my first semester. I
requested to be a part of the group. I posted to the group about a year ago when someone asked
to borrow a book for Diversity class. I posted again to the Facebook group in November about a
meeting Alex Piedras, Maria Alonzo and me planned on having to discuss ways to support
minority communities. I learned about the Olmsted Task force via the facebook group and had
become aware of different resources and needs for people with disabilities through this channel.
I plan on continuing to be a part of the Facebook group upon graduation and will do a better job
of using that facebook group with any new initiatives or projects aimed at improving the lives of
people with disabilities.
The second artifact is an assignment given during Advanced Placement. The purpose of the
assignment consisted of identifying common placement strategies. My artifact highlights
organizations like Candeo and IVRS as services and placement providers for people with
disabilities. In addition to Candeo and IVRS, during my practicum at IVRS, I learned about other
service providers. The list changes and with the demand for transition services as a result of
WIOA more providers will emerge. I planned on having a conversation with Michelle Dickerson,
Richard Clark or Leslie and shared with them the asset map developed by Marlu Abarca
identifying the educational resources for Latinos in the state of Iowa. The model can serve IVRS
address where the gaps in services are and what services does each provider give to people with
disabilities.
