Welcome to a New Year at Somerstrand College, we know this will be a Brilliant year. Please
take note of the information below:

1. Parent involvement 2017: please fill in the parent involvement letter - this is in the SSC
info pack (school rules and important info for 2017). We need assistance in every
department.
2. Parent Meeting: Thanks for the excellent attendance.
3. Remember Friday Band and Youth Club: grade 4 and up! You may bring a friend from
outside the school.
4. Friday dress-ups: Beach dress up 27 January 2017
5. Pizza/Pony/Tractor Fridays will continue: weather permitted.
6. Please register for horse riding lessons / Pony Club.
7. Stimuzone will assist all ages with computer literacy, at R70.
8. School uniform: Thank you for everyone in assisting with ensuring that the school
uniforms are adhered to. We also have second hand clothing available at the Tuck shop.
Any concerns with the school uniforms need to be addressed with Missus Ks. New
students have a month to correct and existing students have 2 weeks. Parents need to
apply for a permission slip (from the office) if their kids are in the incorrect uniform,
please bring receipt from Missus K.
9. Stienie is our new accounts lady, she is busy sorting all our accounts. Please be patient
with her and if you have any queries please send her an email to

10.First day photo orders and payment must be in by the 2nd of February.

Sports and Culture

11.WPCSSA - 22 February 2017: all parents / student supporters will be invited to join
SSC athletics. T-shirt for the event, Adult R 130.00 (SMALL 2XL) and children R 100.00
(1-14 years). Orders must be in by the 10th of February 2017.
12.Sport: please fill in the enrolment form.
13.Culture: please fill in the enrolment form.
14.Swimming (Juniors and Seniors): Beach Road swimming pool 07:00. Swimming Fee:
R50/month and Parents must pay the entrance fee of R11 for under 16 and R22 for 16+
at the gate. Swimming clothing: blue hot pants, white swimming cap & goggles.
Please note that we are getting our swimmers ready for the Inter house-Gala at the
Strand Swimming pool where Parents and students will participate in a fun and skilled
base set of events.
15.Gala: The swimming gala will be taking place on the 28 th of January and is compulsory
for grade 4 to 11. Children 6 months old to grade 3 not compulsory, may use arm
bands or swimming board to help them.
Primary and High School
16.School books & stationery: SUMMARY - OOM POLLA'S. Please ensure that all students
are ready with their stationery. Get the school stationery lists from www.oompolla.co.za
(ONLY the recommended brands).
o Certain of the books that were on back order have been received and has been
handed out to the relevant learners students signed for these.
o Back Orders on books: Oom Polla will inform when your back-order books are
ready for collection at Paarl Valley School, collections will be between 12:00 and
14:00.
o The books and stationery has run relevantly smoothly this year, however as in all
schools, there have been a few hitches. Please send an email to
pa@somerstrand.co.za with regards to any queries or mistakes and we will
ensure that this is attended to.
o Oom Polla During December and beginning of January Oom Polla only focused
on school orders and are busy sorting through the stock and will be open to the
public again on Monday.
o Please ensure if you use a different supplier that you purchase the correct books.
17.Second hand school books: if you donate your old books - we offer a second-hand book
service to all parents at the Tuck shop.
18.Every student received an info pack with a hard copy of the school rules. Parent and
student must sign acknowledgment of these and send a hard copy back to the
administration office on Monday, the 23rd of January 2017. Students must keep
their rule book with them always (In a flip file, as we will use this to show the student
what he/she did wrong). Please note the new policies, i.e. social media policy.
19.All social media to be registered by the IT (Information Technology) this is in process.
20.Grade 4 and up: Students that will receive remedial in reading/maths must register
their laptops. A mark under 50 % in Afr/Eng and Maths will qualify you to start the
computer remedial program. The remedial team will enrol you into the program.

21.Please take note of the homework policy: if a student does not do their homework, the
student will be enrolled immediately into the homework class on the same day.

22.Although students arrive at school at 7h30 in their sport attire due to the athletics, they
will be given enough time to dress into their school uniform before the start of an
academic day. Please assist in ensuring that children take part in the sport and fitness.
23.The SomerStrand Event Calendar is already loaded on the school website:
www.somerstrand.co.za.
24.Grade 4 to 11: Please budget for the school curriculum camp 10-12 March 2017 R800. This is compulsory for grade 4 and up.
25.Running schedule has changed to Wednesdays and Fridays. All runners (dressed in
sport clothes) and speed walkers must be ready on the field at 07:00. Please come
dressed in your running clothing. Parents welcome!
26.Orientation week continues: Due to lack of participation we have decided to extend
orientation week for new students (23 - 27 January 2017): Grade 4, 5 and 8 (new
students and new phase student) come dressed in blue (yes, only blue - you are a
whale), wear your dummy and have a whale tale (blue) on your head. New kids grade
6, 7, 10 and 11 dummy, whale tale and blue clothes. Communication of marketing
campaign will follow. Friday evening, 27th of January, the whale concert will be held.
