Election of 1932:

Republican nominee: Herbert Hoover


Democrat nominee: Franklin D. Roosevelt
FDR- loved campaigning- crowds cheered him. He had a very general

plan, he didnt need to be specific


Hoover- often booed
If FDR elected- destroy American free enterprise and American system

of government
FDR won by a landslide
Democrats also won majority in the house and senate
FDRs brain trust- FDRs group of academic advisors

Lame Duck Period

FDR elected in November, took office in March


In the time between Nov and March, the outgoing president is known
as Lame Duck

Depression Connections

Stock market crash- October 1929


Buying on margin- risk bank loans
Smoot- Hawley Tariff- increased tariffs as much as 50%
In response, foreign countries increased tariffs- the result was stifled

exports
Tariff- tax on goods coming in to the united states

Dust Bowl
-

Dust Bowl grips the Midwest


Drought cripples farms; many go out of business and seek employment
elsewhere- California and Large cities.
