CANOLA – A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE FOR YOUR BODY

OR YOUR TRUCK?
The cheapest cooking oil on the market today is called Canola. It is used to fry potatoes in fast food
restaurants and is found on the list of ingredients for mayonnaise sold in health food stores. Canola is
taking the place of peanut oil in peanut butter and is being blended with olive oil for domestic kitchen
use.

Canola is a name that has only recently appeared in the marketplace, and the name is apparently
derived from ‘Canadian-oil‘. Canola oil is actually produced from the rape seed plant. Rape (Brassica
napus), a member of the mustard family, is listed in the Encyclopedia Britannica as a poisonous plant
with toxic effects which include pulmonary emphysema, respiratory distress, anemia, constipation,
irritability and blindness in cattle. So, how could such a potentially dangerous plant provide us with a
viable food product?
Rapeseed production in Canada began for industrial purposes during WWII, primarily for use as a
lubricant in steam engines of naval and merchant ships. Its use as an edible oil was limited because
of its relatively low digestibility and palatability - primarily due to high concentrations of erucic acid and
glycosinates. The end of WWII caused a plummeting of the market for the rapeseed oil, and
stimulated the awareness of Canada`s dependency on imports for edible oils; this indirectly spurred
the research that led to the development of rapeseed into an edible oil.
According to John Thomas, author of Young Again: How to Reverse the Aging Process, the name
Canola was chosen to disguised the introduction of rape oil to America (and let’s face it, the name
“rape” is not destined to invite consumer confidence!). Rapeseed oil was widely used in animal feeds
in Great Britain between 1986 and 1991 at which time its use was discontinued.

Most people remember the mad cow disease epidemic and that cows, pigs and sheep went blind,
behaved insanely, attacked other animals and people, and eventually had to be destroyed.

Reports at the time blamed the erratic behavior of livestock on a viral disease called scrapie (in sheep
and pigs) and mad cow disease in cattle. However, when rape oil was removed from animal feed after
1991, 'scrapie' disappeared.

According to Dr. Len Horowitz, author of Emerging Viruses, AIDS and Ebola: Nature, Accident or
Intentional, what scrapie is in sheep, mad cow disease in cattle, wasting disease in wild game
animals, and whirling disease in fish, is Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in people.

English experts told people not to panic if they had been cooking with rape oil when mad cow disease
was at its peak in Great Britain, said Thomas. The 'experts' added that the effects of rape oil ingestion
takes at least 10 years to manifest!

In the northwest United States, (with grain prices down and grass seed growers faced with increasing
opposition to their seasonal field burning), beautiful yellow-flowered rape fields are a contrasting deep
green panorama of what has traditionally been field after field of grasses and grains. Rape, the most
toxic of all food-oil plants that has no natural insectoid predators, is a weed that can grow vigorously in
most climates and terrains throughout North America.

Rape becomes Canola


Officially Canola oil is known as "Low Euricic Acid Rape", a solid fatty acid, derived from oils of
mustard seeds and rape seeds. Rape industry experts love to tell how Canola was developed in
Canada and that it is safe to use. They admit it was developed from the rape seed, but that through
traditional plant breeding techniques, it is no longer rape seed, but "Canola" instead. They love to talk
about canola's qualities, its unsaturated structure (Omega 3, 6 and 12), it’s wonderful digestibility and
its fatty acid makeup. They turn us against naturally saturated oils and fats, while they come to the
rescue with Canola oil.

Canada is mainly responsible for Canola being marketed in the USA. The Canadian government and
industry paid the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) $50 million dollars to have Canola oil
placed on the (GRAS) List "Generally Recognized As Safe". Thus a new industry was created.

Laws were enacted affecting international trade, commerce, and traditional diets. Yet all this was done
despite studies with lab animals which yielded disastrous results. Rats developed fatty degeneration
of heart, kidney, adrenals, and thyroid gland. When Canola oil was withdrawn from their diets, the
deposits dissolved but scar tissue remained on all vital organs. No studies on humans were made
before money was spent to promote Canola oil in the USA. And the marketing paid off. By 1988,
Canola and rapeseed oil production, worldwide, was 7.5 million metric tons, ranking it number three
behind soybean (15.4mmt) and palm (11.7mmt), followed by sunflower (7.0mmt), cottonseed
(3.4mmt), and peanut (2.8mmt).
While it may seem novel to use a vegetable derived oil for industrial purposes, it must be understood
that this is for a specific reason. Rapeseed/Canola is a ‘penetrating’ oil. Rapeseed had a rather limited
industrial acceptance until the development of steam power, when it was discovered that rapeseed oil
would cling to water and steam washed metal surfaces better than any other lubricant. It has also
been used as a diesel fuel substitute and to manufacture plastics. If the literature promoting Canola oil
is true in stating that the only difference between harmful rapeseed oil and ‘edible’ Canola is that
Canola has little/no erucic acid and glycosinolates, doesn’t that mean we are consuming ‘healthy’
industrial grade oil? Can an engine lubricant be a healthy oil for the human body?

Canola and Your Vanishing Health

In the last 20 years we have seen a dramatic increase in muscular disorders such as multiple
sclerosis and cerebral palsy. Soy and (rape) oils are players in the outbreak of these disease
conditions. (So are the organophosphates--insecticides such as malthion-- used in food production in
the name of efficiency, commented Thomas).
Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a rare fatal degenerative disease caused by a build up of long-chain
fatty acids (c22 to c28) which destroys the myelin (protective sheath) of the nerves. Canola oil is a
very long chain fatty acid oil (c22) which makes it of prime suspicion in cases of myelin sheath
degeneration.

Rape is also an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Acetylcholine is critical to the transmission of signals


from nerves to muscles. When the normal function of acetylcholinesterase is compromised, nerve
fibers are not able to send the signals properly and muscles will not respond as expected.

The toxic properties of the rape plant are cyanide-containing compounds called isothiocyanates.
Thomas explains that cyanide inhibits the production of ATP in our bodies. ATP is the energy molecule
that powers the body and keeps us healthy and young.
Consumed in food, Canola oil depresses the immune system, causing it to "go to sleep."
Canola oil is also high in glycosides which cause health problems by blocking (inhibiting) enzyme
function. Its effects are accumulative, taking years to show up.

Another effect of consuming Canola oil is agglutination, or the clumping together of the red blood
cells. This happens due to the production of a latex-like substance that causes this condition. The
overall effect within the body is the inability of the blood to freely move the finer capillary structures,
thereby preventing the transport of nutrients and the removal of wastes.

Glaucoma is one result of insufficient blood flow due to agglutination. Thomas believes that ingestion
of rape over time may cause glaucoma and other vision irregularities such as retinitis. In this respect,
glaucoma has much in common with hair loss, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy
and hearing problems.
When used in cooking where the oil is subjected to extremely high temperatures, such as in frying, the
smoke from the oil has been shown to contain carcinogens that cause lung cancer. (Wall St. Journal:

Those who will defend Canola oil say that the Chinese and Indians have used it for centuries with no
effect. History suggests that rapeseed was cultivated as early as the 20th century B.C. in India, and
was introduced into China and Japan about the time of Christ. References to its use or that of a close
relative appear in the earliest writings of European and Asian civilizations.
Rapeseed plants have the ability to grow at relatively low temperatures with far less heat units
required than for other oilseed crops. Therefore, rapeseed was one of the very few oil sources that
could be successfully grown in the extremes of the temperate regions. This led to rapeseed being
grown in Europe as early as the 13th century. In later centuries, rapeseed was used for both cooking
and lighting, as its oil produced a smokeless white flame. However, exactly how much was used for
cooking and how much for lighting remains unknown.
There are many people throughout the world who are convinced that rape oil is poisonous to the
human body, that Canola is marginally better, and that the body digests rape in such a fashion that
congests the blood and restricts the flow of lymph fluid - causing a myriad of physical and
psychological disorders.
Thomas recommends that anybody who desires to enjoy optimal health must take personal
responsibility for what they put into their bodies. 'Health care' industry is an oxymoron; it protects its
own health and its own economic interests. Learn to protect your health and economic interests by
learning how to take care of yourself. Then act on that knowledge.
