OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT:
The objective of our project is to design horizontal alignment on the given
highway according to AASHTO specification selecting an appropriate velocity
for the Radius.

PROCESS:
In this project following steps are followed:
First, tangents are drawn for the whole highway
Secondly, determine the northing and easting from AutoCAD
Third, calculation of theta and delta
Fourth, select appropriate velocity for the radius then
Markup the pc, pt and mid ordinate
After all of these assign radius on the tangents if any problem occur while
setting the radius change north and easting and after that theta and delta
will change if it would not help change the super elevation even if these both
methods not work at last change the velocity.

FORMULAE USED IN CALCULATIONS

For E and N:
E=E2-E1

; N=N2-N1

For :
=tan-1(N/E)
For :
= 12
For length (Pi to Pi):
Length= (E2+N2)
For Radius min:
Rmin=V2/15(e+f)
For tangent:
T=R tan (/2)
For LC (length of curve):
LC=2 r /360

M R 1 cos

For mid ordinate:

For external secant:

Easting and northing coordinates of above points are as:
A=598861.7534', 3314291.6653'
PI-A=598980.3517', 3314331.7686'
PI-B= 599063.0061', 3314338.7817'

E = 598980.3517-598861.7534=118.60
3314291.665=40.10
E = 598980.3517-599063.0061=82.65
N=3314331.7686-3314338.782=7.01

N=3314331.7686-

Length of the line AA and AB can be found out by Pythagoras theorem:

AA=125.20

AB= 82.95

PI Station can found out by adding the length of the lines

1=tan-1(N /E)= tan-1 (40.10/118.60)=18.68
2=tan-1(N /E)= tan-1 (-7.01/82.65)=4.84

So the becomes = 1 -2 = 13.833 (negative sign in table shows

clockwise direction)
Now selecting the speed
If V= 30 MILES/HR

V2
R min
15 f s e

We have

R min = 302 / [15(0.160+0.06) where the values of e and f are according to

AASHTO.
R min = 273 ft round of to 275 ft
Now for setting this radius to our marked tangents we have to calculate the
following things to set the radius in them.

BC AND EC POINTS
MID ORDINATE (M)

T R tan
2
External (E )

For BC we have to calculate tangent from

T= 278.097 * TAN (13.8321/2)
T = 33.732 FT
For PC and PT:
T - PI = PC=125.20-33.732=91.468=0+91.56
BC + L = PT=91.468+67.14=158.608=1+58.6

M R 1 cos

L=2

/360=67.14

= 278.097(1 COS (13.8321/2)

E R

= 2.0235 ft

=278.097(1/COS (13.8321/2) -1)

=2.038 FT
