About Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer, also known as the Golden City, is one of the most famous cities in the royal state of
Rajasthan. Located in the middle of the desert, 575 km away from the state capital Jaipur, the
city is famous for its rich heritage. Jaisalmer is also a district and is spread over 1429 sq km
sharing boundaries with Bikaner in the north, Pakistan in the west and south-west, Barmer and
Jodhpur on the south and Jodhpur in the east.
The economy of the district largely depends on the tourism industry which has grown rapidly
due to the tremendous efforts of Rajasthan tourism. Oil and gas reserves have also been
discovered by Oil India Limited in 1988.

History of Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer was named after its founder, Rao Jaisal. Jaisalmer translates tothe hill fort of Jaisal.
In earlier times, the area of Jaisalmer was part of Gujarat and until the 11th century was ruled
by the Bargujar King. Jaisalmer never came under the direct ruling of the Islamic sultanate due
to its unique geographical position although it agreed to pay an annual tribute to the Delhi
sultan. Mughal emperor Akbar was also married to one of the princesses of Jaisalmer and thus
Jaisalmer maintained a good relationship with the Mughals.

Things to do in Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer is also famous for its folk music and dances which have been widely appreciated
around the globe. Among tourist attractions, the Jaisalmer Fort is the most famous one. Built in
1156 by the Bhati Rajput ruler Jaisal, Jaisalmer Fort is situated on Trikuta Hill and had been
the scene of many battles. It is inhabited even now and about a quarter of the population of the
city live in the fort premises.
Patwon-ki-Haveli and Nathmalji-ki-Haveli are other attractions of the city. The Desert Festival
which is held over three days in January, every year, provides an insight into the culture, folk
songs and dance of Jaisalmer. Sand dunes, Jain temples, palaces and a colourful display of the
art and craft of the destination draw a large number of people, from within the country and
outside as well. Tourists can also try various attractive packages options to tour Jaisalmer.
The best time to visit Jaisalmer is between the months of October to February. Those visiting in
January can be a part of the Desert Festival, which is held for three days during this time.

Featured review about Jaisalmer

The Golden City- Jaislmer
"The 'Golden City' of Jaisalmer lies in the far west of the country. This enticing city of Rajasthan
is the most popular tourist spot in the state. Embraced in the vast and mighty desert, the city
depicts the grandeur of the royal medieval era and holds great historic value.
It goes without saying that the city holds great prominence in the history of India with its rich
cultural heritage and ethnicity. The embodiment of exotic beauty, Jaisalmer attributes a vast
terrain of golden sand dunes where one can enjoy rides on the colourfully adorned camels. The
Jaisalmer Fort is literally the crowning glory of the city, as it rises majestically from the dunes,
like a hypnotising mirage. The fort has 99 bastions that circle the fort's many lanes which are
still inhabited by the locals. Notes of flute and Ravana Hatha emanate from these lanes, giving
you company as you climb the steep lanes leading up to the fort.
Numerous palaces, fortresses and temples are scattered in the city, most of which were built by
the Rajputs, whose present generations still continue to reside in the land of their mighty
ancestors. The annual desert fair that takes place in the city attracts tourists from all over the
world. It is a vivacious carnival of vibrancy and colours that features camel shows and
enthralling rides and promises an experience of a lifetime.
Hop on to a camel and take a ride through the desert sands. Camp out at the Sam Sand Dunes
and enjoy a cup of warm, salty tea made with camel's milk. Rather than being repulsive, the tea
Page 3/14

is delicious and might even demand a second round! Enjoy an enthralling folk dance and music
performance wrapped up cosily around a camp-fire. Dine at a rooftop restaurant for
breathtaking views of the city. Shop and indulge in a friendly banter with the shopkeepers
selling exquisite jewellery, handicrafts and clothes. The humble gentry will please you with their
hospitality." - Rajendra Maratha, Jodhpur, 1 month ago

A journey to heart of desert-Jaisalmer

"I went to Jaipur in January 1st week. It's a very nice place to visit. There are places like pathwa
haveli, a very famous gadisar lake, jaisalmer fort, sand dunes etc. You can easily find cheap
rooms of rate 500 a day near jaisalmer railway station. It's a romantic place. I visited this place
with my friends and its one of the best trips that I had. Watching folk dance, listening to folk
music, doing camel ride and doing camel race with friends is all the things that you can do.
Cheap and easily affordable for college students like me. It is at a distance of 18 hours from
Delhi. This is the place Rajasthan is known for. Desert. Sitting at the sand during evening
seeing the sun set is one of the most beautiful views you can have. Do go here. Good for both
couple and friend destination." - Bharat Tripathi, Lucknow, 2 months ago
Desert Outpost of India offering unique experiences
"Jaisalmer named after Raja Jassal who established the city some 700 years ago offers a
unique experience for tourists. First, the lack of people in a vast expanse of land which is quite
rare in a densely populated country like ours. Secondly, the dress and attire of the people with
turbans and ear studs for males and colourful lehengas for women. Also, an abandoned village
Kuldhara which is a tourist attraction. And the sight of giant windmills. Finally, the experience
one gets in the sand dunes especially in the nights is a sight to behold. There are architectural
marvels too in form of the fort, Jain temples and lakes. Overall, a must visit." - Tarit Ray,
Gurgaon, 2 months ago
Place to feel actual Rajashthan!
"Being a Jaipurite and always love for Rajashthani culture and food I will quote Jaisalmer has
enhanced it more. Proper Rajashthani food which includes daal baati churma gatte ki sabji
garlic chuttney and most famous keer sangri. I have never tasted these delicious things in a
restaurant. Restaurants near the fort should be on your list while visiting Jaisalmer. The fort is
another example of art and heritage of Rajashthan. A suggestion get yourself clicked near fort
during day and night time too. To roam around the city its better to take a walk because small
distances and you do not miss out the daily routine of the city and of course street market.
The main attraction of Jaisalmer is of course desert so enjoy the time in desert visit desert
around 2-3 pm so that you neither miss out golden desert in sun and also relish the sunrise. It
will be a bit hot during day time but after sun sets you ll be in need of warm clothes. Camel ride
is must and in desert you can enjoy Rajashthani folk dance by localities. After sun sets go for
desert safari where you will enjoy folk dance with folk music which is a worth watch and finally
the great Rajashthani food. Staying there in a Cannopy is also a good option. But I preferred
staying near fort. Well the most famous Patwa ki Haveli is a must visit, beautiful doors and
windows and the haveli itself leaves you to feel like to own a haveli like that. Tour guide is
Page 4/14

recommended so that you wont miss all the history about it.
What to Buy: For ladies go for bandeez and lehariya. There is a rare collection which is
exclusively available only in Jaisalmer. Rest of Rajashthan too has these but there is a lot of
difference in collection. You can buy artificial jewellery and souvenirs.
More Information: Also there is bhaang shop which is legal." - Vartika Agarwal, Jaipur, 2

Just an amazing place to be at Jaisalmer

"The entire trip was as joyful one. We saw the Sand Dunes. Really it was amazing. Living by the
sand dunes in the tent is just another world. The activities in the camp fire & activity well with the
regional dancers, musicians, singers made our evening just meaningful. It was the experience
beyond explain. Although it gives them their bread and butter, but then again, I would say that
whatever we paid, was nothing for the experience we had there.
The stay of hotel was superb and the care and feeling safe in the city adds star to the city.
People are caring and supportive. The war museum that reminds us the victory of 1971 war
between Pakistan and India also makes us proud when we touch the tanks, fighter, arms and
ammunition with our own hand used by our army in those days. Hats of to the guards of our
nation." - Sanjeev Franklin, Jaipur, 2 months ago
