FLY THE AMERICAN FLAG
This month we celebrate our freedom and honor those who have
made sacrifices for all of us on the Fourth of July. While many
commemorate by going to parades, barbequing with family and
friends, and enjoying fireworks, many others remember by flying
the American flag.

My mother is one of those who would always be out early in the

morning on the fourth placing flags in our front yard. It was her
way of honoring those men and women who fought for our way
of life. I follow her example today by flying the flag each day
on my home. I think it is the least I can do for those preser ving
our security.

As I look around South Florida I see the diversity which makes us

great and I am in awe of the variety of cultures which add flavor
to America’s melting pot. The FIFA World Cup Soccer is bringing
us together and exhibits our national pride. In the office, our
Brazilian Art Director and Argentinean Executive Editor cheer their
respective teams as this Philadelphia born transplant hopes for the
opposing goalies to allow a few balls to trickle into the net and
set up a Miracle on Grass. We will see who has the bragging
rights this month. It is remarkable how sporting events can bring
out the best in the human spirit.

This month’s cover story shows another way the human spirit of
individuals can have an extraordinary impact on the lives of others.
Residents Gregg Sjoquist and Jennifer Klaassens have been pillars
when it comes to building a community of philanthropy through the
Wasie Foundation. These remarkable people are supporting local
charities and events which assist those most in need in our county.
I have had the privilege to work with both Gregg and Jennifer on
several projects and I am proud to call them friends. I know you
will enjoy reading about their impressive work.

In this issue there are additional stories on people making an

impact in our community in their own way, as well as the monthly
columns on Dining, Lifestyle Advice, Travel and the Scene Pages
of events from previous months. Something for ever yone to enjoy!

We said farewell to our Rotary Exchange Student and our home

family grew immensely from the experience as well. We miss Tim
already, but we have made new friends which will last a lifetime,
with the hope to see each other again soon.

So as you go about your summer, this July especially, I urge you to

remember those who sacrificed and continue to ser ve our countr y,
which allows us to enjoy our freedom, in some way. Maybe it can
be something as simple as Flying the American Flag.

THE WASIE FOUNDATION
A LEGACY OF
GIVING by Kevin Lane

J
en’s energy, enthusiasm and intelligence shine through like a beacon,
and that light shines on the community,” said Gregg Sjoquist,
CEO of The Wasie Foundation when the City of Fort Lauderdale
officially proclaimed April 14th, 2010 as “Jen Klaassens Appreciation
Day”. “She works tirelessly to help others in the community; this day
was to let her know her work is greatly appreciated.” Sjoquist runs
the independent philanthropic organization which provides grants
and support to South Florida non-profits focused on healthcare and
education. “When I first met Jen, I knew she was a perfect fit for
The Wasie Foundation,” Gregg said. “Her energy, enthusiasm and
intelligence shine through like a beacon, and I knew her light would
shine on the community. I couldn’t be any happier.”

Jen is universally lauded, not only for giving checks, but as the face
of the Foundation, she is on a mission to change the way non-profits
do business by empowering them with the tools they need to grow
their organizations. She actively provides opportunities for non-profit
executives to attend conferences on social media, fundraising and
leadership. ”I’m here to motivate others, to have a sense of community,
to get involved by volunteering their time, talents and treasures,” she
said. One of the reasons she is active in dozens of organizations is to
network with for-profit and not-for-profits to help connect people. She
urges CEO’s of for-profit companies to “lead by example.”

In many ways, non-profit organizations are the fabric of our

community. As their staffs work tirelessly to assist those who depend
on their services, they rely heavily on individual citizens for success,”
Jen pointed out. “Most charities could not function without their
volunteers, who donate their time to lend a hand in fundraising, help
out at an event, provide one on one support to a family with a sick
child, and even help fix the computers when they go down.”

One project which is unique and exceptionally exciting to Jen is

the creation and nurturing of the Non-Profit Center at the Greater
Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, which features comfortable
seating for meetings, computers, webinar opportunities, and free
access to foundationcenter.org, an on-line foundation directory.
While there have always been non-profit members of the Chamber
in it’s over one hundred year history, Jen saw an opportunity to
help facilitate closer working relationships with the ninety non-
profit members. “A core principal of The Wasie Foundation has
always been to positively influence the community by helping
people overcome barriers and become self-reliant, so we began
“ our efforts at the Chamber by providing trustee-level memberships
to charitable organizations like Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment
Center, Broward Children’s Center, Epilepsy Foundation and Jessica
June Children’s Cancer Foundation,” Jen said. With the goal of
forming partnerships through volunteer services, money, or in-kind
donations, these top-tier memberships gave non-profit organizations
unprecedented access to business leaders through high-level
networking receptions.

Bob Swindell
President - Broward Alliance

W
hen asked how he measures success, Bob
replies; “In my present role leading the
Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, success
is simple to measure; but not easy in today’s economic
environment. Bringing new employers and keeping
existing employers is what we do every day. The
team at the Alliance feels a personal obligation and
commitment to our friends, family and neighbors to
accelerate job growth in Broward County. We are
dedicated and enjoy the opportunity to promote
Greater Fort Lauderdale to business.”

Bob is looking forward to a stronger, more diversified

economy, representing greater opportunities for future
generations to find their dream job, earning a high
wage and living a fulfilling life in South Florida. “We
have an incredible opportunity with everything South
Florida has to offer, and we need to make sure the
nationally and international business people are aware
that Greater Fort Lauderdale is an ideal location to
grow a successful business. Bob was appointed by
Florida Governors Martinez, Chiles, and Bush to lead
statewide regulatory boards, as a member of the
Florida Board of Harbor Pilot Commissioners.

Bob has also had the opportunity to serve on the

American Red Cross Broward County Chapter’s
Board of Directors for many years. During his
period of service he has had the unique responsibility
during the impact of Hurricane Andrew to serve as
Board Chairman. “I will never forget my first visit
to Homestead with members of our emergency
management team days after the storm. Navigation
devices were not as common in 1992, and
navigating without the assistance of street signs
and highway exit signs was just another of many
challenges in the early days after the storm. But we
did the best we could and got the job done.”

Bob Swindell grew-up in Broward County loving the

coastal lifestyle which is such an important component
of our quality of life. Bob’s father taught him how to
sail at the age of ten and was certified for Scuba
Diving at the age of thirteen. “We explored Florida
by boat off-shore down to the Keys and Thousand
Islands and taking the inland waterway up to Lake
Okeechobee. Bob loves the South Florida Lifestyle
and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. LM
