1. You have to estimate the helipad dimensions and sizes of tubular for
top, bottom, diagonal and wind bracing using the given formulas.
2. Design the supports taking account of platform motion in longitudinal
and lateral direction of bridge, along with the need for stability of the
helipad.
3. Build a 3-D truss model using STADPRO, SAP2000, or any other
structural analysis and design software where the members are selected
as beam-column elements.
4. Define load cases as follows:
(a) Self-weight of structural model
(b) Model the dead load of the helipad, and lighting and cable and
padeyes as concentrated loads
(c) Model wind force (service and storm wind) as concentrated loads
at the structural joints.
5. Define load combination
(a) Lift load = (C1 x 4a) + (C2 x 4b); where C1 = contingency factor
for self-wt, C2 for dead load
(b) Operating (service) load = (C1 x 4a) + (C2 x 4b) + (C3 x4c +
4d) (operating wind load),
(c) Extreme Storm load = (C1 x 4a) + (C2 x 4b) + (C3 x 4c) + 4d
(extreme storm)
6. Data:
(a) Helicopter:
i. Group A: Super Puma AS332 L2
ii. Group B: Bell 214ST
iii. Group C: Sikorsky S-92
(b) Wind speed = 30 MPH (operating) and 50 MPH (storm),
(c) Fy = 36 ksi and

7. Grading
(a) Groups of two or three students for each helipad.

(c) Late penalty: 10% for each minute late.
