WINE COUNTRY SPOTLIGHT
Hoppe’s Garden Bistro & Wine Shop
You have to wonder what Old Timers would say when they saw the word
“The Way Station” emblazoned on the outside of this handsome restored
building in the middle of Cayucos just across from the ocean. And then
went inside and were confronted by one of best wine (and wines by the
glass) lists around. The food is also a long way above anything you might
have found in this charming seaside town at the turn-of-the-century. These
are all some of the reasons that if you mention to people
along the coast and inland (at least those who know
enough to appreciate and search out a fine bottle of wine
and first rate food) that you are headed to Cayucos, the
first words out of their mouth are likely to be “Hoppe’s
Garden Bistro.”
The menu chef and owner Wilhelm (‘Bill’) Hoppe has
put together is inspired by the seasons and complimented
by that exceptional wine list (with wines also available for
retail sale). He features organic meat and produce from the
farmers markets in the area and uses local lobster and
shellfish, including abalone direct from the famous
Abalone Farm.
Then add to that the wild game and venison and a selec-
tion of both vegetarian and vegan items and put the whole
delightful and delicious mix in a historic building just a
short walk from the beach. Mix in gardens that are nothing
less than a delight – and often a surprise – and toss in a
good helping of their friendly, helpful and enthusiastic staff,
and the result is Hoppe’s Garden Bistro & Wine Shop.
Hoppe’s is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Wednesday thru Sunday (with a seated multi-course
Sunday Brunch); dinner on those days is served beginning
at 5 p.m. They are located at 78 North Ocean Avenue in
Cayucos. You can reach them for reservations or more

Big, Bold Wines from an Historic Vineyard
“As I like to say, my Pinot is bigger than your Pinot!” This is from
Fintan du Fresne, winemaker for Chamisal Vineyards, who says it
with a smile and charming New Zealand accent. “We are blessed

being poured in their charming Edna Valley tasting room is an
opaque ruby that looks more like a Syrah, with a powerful bouquet
and complex mélange of flavors. Their 2004 Califa Pinot, a reserve

“It’s all up to the special combination of soils and climate,” Fin
explains as he sniffs his glass. “We have a mix of limestone and rich
clay that complements the cool, coastal climate courtesy of the Pacific
Ocean. And, daily fog off the bay keeps temperatures low, so our
grapes get a long hang-time and
develop really intense flavors.”
This 80-acre estate has long
been noted for its distinctive char-
acteristics. Planted in 1973 by
pioneering winemaker Norman

Goss, it was the first vineyard in

Edna Valley and has been
amazing the palates of wine lovers
since. When purchased by the
Fintan du Fresne, Winemaker for Chamisal Vineyards next owners in the early ’90s,
the vineyard was meticulously
replanted to feature a diverse clonal selection that includes 10 clones
of Pinot Noir and 11 of Chardonnay, along with Syrah, Grenache and
Pinot Gris. The newest bottling to the line up, Monologue, highlights
the most exceptional Pinot clone of the vintage.
The wine is the main attraction here but not the only one. The
schedule of events for wine club members and others, including the
upcoming Lobster Fest and Farm Burger Bash, are not to be missed.
The relaxing tasting room boasts a spacious patio that’s perfect for
lounging and enjoying your wine tasting – you may find you never
bother moving on!
Stop in and experience it yourself. They’re located at 7525 Orcutt
Road in San Luis Obispo and are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

You may have heard that stereotype about surfers, and the fact
that they may not have a lot on their minds. It doesn’t often hold
true, especially in the case of Harold Osborne, winemaker for
Salisbury Vineyards. He’s passionate about winemaking, he’s
passionate about surfing, and he’s an interesting and knowledge-
able individual.
If you get a chance to stop by Salisbury Vineyards and Tasting

“Classical music reflects both the rich complexities of intimate
human interaction, as well as the nature of the larger society,” said
Music Director and virtuoso violinist Scott Yoo. “This summer, we
want to reinforce that that these exquisitely-crafted works sprang out
of very human circumstances.”
The 2010 program explores unrequited love, political oppression,
the horrors of war and other influences that resulted in works by
Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvo ák, Ravel, Ginastera,
Lutoslawski, and contemporary American composers Paul Schoen-
field and Patrick Zimmerli.
The festival draws players from the Metropolitan Opera
Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic,
the Baltimore Symphony and a host of fine orchestras across the
country. Over the years, the festival has presented emerging artists
early in their careers, including Richard Goode, Jeffrey Kahane,
Hilary Hahn, Sir Neville Marinner, the Kronos Quartet, Bela Fleck,
Edgar Meyer, and the first American premiere performances of
Maxim and Dmitri Shostakovich with Mstislav Rostropovich, imme-
diately following their defection from the Soviet Union in 1981.
The 2010 guest artists in residency include violinist Timothy Fain
and internationally-recognized pianists Hung-Kuan Chen, Tema
Blackstone and John Novacek. In its Fringe Series, which highlights
classically-trained artists working in other genres, Ensemble Galilei,
a group specializing in early Celtic music on original instruments,
and Festival of Four, who create an engaging blend of world and folk
music, will appear on the festival’s stages.
Each summer, more than 7,000 attendees enjoy concerts in
historic, spectacular venues such as Hearst Castle and the historic
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, Chapel Hill in wine country, and
in the county’s many scenic wineries, parks and gardens. Festival
visitors also take advantage of the Central Coast’s wineries, restau-
