The SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International

Centre of Thailand (Public Organization)
or SACICT has continuously implemented
programs under Product Development
strategy to preserve and inherit the wisdom of
Thai craftsmen through generations. With
modern design concept and the creativity of
designers and experts, Thai handicrafts can
be recognized locally and internationally.
In 2015, the Product Development strategy
focused on the following 3 aspects: 1) Raising
Thai crafts to an international level by developing
design of arts and crafts according to World
design trend through a process of comprehensive
trend analysis. 2) Linking and exchanging
knowledge of heritage art in ASEAN through
the wisdom that have common roots of culture
and 3) Encouraging sustainable development
on crafts in communities by using creativity as
a key
These 3 major projects consist of Thai
Navatasilp or Innovative Crafts for SACICT
Craft trend, Cross Cultural Crafts and Sustainable
Crafts.

In order to make the project implementation useful for education, dissemination and
further commercial development, SACICT
Prototypes 2015 book was created to compile
a collection of all products developed by SACICT.
The book contains product images resulting
from the development of the above-mentioned
3 projects, guidelines of prototypes, concepts
of designers and creators and also product
presentation in various exhibitions and showcases
organized locally and internationally such as
the Interior Lifestyle Tokyo 2015 in Japan, the
International Innovative Craft Fair 2015, the
Organic and Natural Expo 2015, and the
Innovative craftfair organized to honour Her
Majesty the Queen.
The SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International
Centre of Thailand (Public Organization)
sincerely hopes that SACICT prototypes
2015 book will be a useful tool to create an
inspiration for developing the products with
identity and value as well as to create the

1. Development of Sustainable Crafts
Due to the current changing trends of economic, social and
environmental aspects, the ways of life of people in all levels have been
significantly affected. This project has therefore become the creation
of handicraft products to benefit balance awareness of economic, social,
culture and environmental systems for the sustainability of communities
on the basis of sufficiency, appropriateness and satisfaction for both
creators and consumers. Under Enough concept through building
understanding and raising the standard of handicrafts of craftsmen
and communities, product forms have been developed to align with
requirements of consumers who appreciate environmentally friendly
products.

2. Development of Cross Cultural Crafts

Southeast Asia region is considered a
melting pot of influences of multi-cultures. Each
country in this region has been inherited, further
developed and adapted in many aspects, such
as ways of life, religion, architecture, belief
including handicrafts. One of the handicrafts
which have been created continuously with an
interesting background is lacquerware. At
present, the number of craftsmen in Asia has
diminished so in order to further preserve
lacquerware, knowledge transfer as well as
further product development were initiated to
create masterpieces through partnership
among 3 countries, namely Vietnam, Myanmar
and Thailand. These attempts aim to establish
the regional handicraft network as well as a
part of entering the AEC.
3. Development of Innovative Crafts for

SACICT Craft Trend
This project has focused on the development
of handicrafts to promote good image for Thai
Handicrafts by developing the existing forms to
become more modern and meet the demand
of consumers. Designers, craftsmen and
communities have studied information and
developed designs of innovative crafts in order
to build collaborative network to

further develop and generate income to
craftsmen and producer communities
in a sustainable manner. The 4 groups
of designers have worked on the

Background
Nowadays, society, economy and environment

are changing rapidly which affects way of life of
people in all levels. The SUPPORT Arts and
Crafts International Centre of Thailand (Public
Organization) or SACICT as the organization
who is responsible for crafts development
has realized the importance of promoting the
members consisting of skillful craftsmen and
communities to be able to cope with this
changing trend. Consequently, Sustainable
Crafts Development Project has been initiated
as a framework to strengthen sustainability
to society and communities especially Thai
craftsmen and artisans. Focus has been put
on products and development processes
as a basis to find a guideline to meet
the communities economic, social and
environmental dimensions towards a balanced
and sustainable co-habitation.
Concept
Sustainable Crafts by SACICT is to create

sustainable craft products that take the balance
of economy, society, culture and environment
into account for the sake of the sustainable
communities on the basis of sufficiency,
appropriateness and satisfaction of both
craftsmen and customers.
Expert

An expert in marketing and designing home
appliances and decorative items from Japan.
Currently, he is a president of Art Resources
Inc. with experience in marketing and product
development, and visual merchandizing in
department stores in Japan for more than 25
years.

Background

Concept
South East Asia Region is considered the

source of multicultural influences. Most by Indian and Chinese by cultures. Each countries
this region had been inherited, developed and
adapted in terms of way of live, religion,
architecture, beliefs, language, political system
as well art and craft, reflecting the identity and
the wisdom. One of the handcraft which have
been continuous created is Lacquerwork
which was originated from China and expanded
to the south and east of China towards and
expand various countries in Asia. Process and
technique were passing throughout were
history. The usage of lacquerware ancient
spread in Korea, Japan, Southern China,
Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

Nowadays the number of lacquerware

artisans in Asia has much diminished. This kind
of ancient skill and traditional wisdom which
reflect each national identity were passed or in
some countries, such as Vietnam, Myanmar
and Thailand. In Myanmar, the accent is on
transmission and preservation, whereas in
Vietnam it is on contemporary design. In order
to preserve lacquerware, the SUPPORT Arts
and Crafts International Centre of Thailand
(Public Organization), or SACICT has realized
the importance of creating network of handicraft
within Southeast Asia Region in order to exchange
knowledge and develop products as a part of
entering the ASEAN Economic Community
(AEC).

Background
Objectives
Under the product development projects

for 2016 budget year, the Product Development
and Innovative Crafts Department has planned
to implement Product Design and Development
in order to add value to the innovative products
and promote them to be locally and internationally
recognized.
For 2016 budget year, SACICT Craft Trend
has been implemented to compile and disseminate information concerning forms of Thai
handicrafts to meet the demand of world market
which consists of product prototypes of SACICT
and product samples from communities as
members of SACICT.
Product Development and Innovative Crafts
Department has planned to implement SACICT
Craft Trend which is the product development
to align with the future trend of the world market.
It aims to create new products through studying
information and developing design to showcase
innovative crafts in the Handicrafts Fair by the
designers, craftsmen or communities. It is
expected that the new products will be used
as case studies to further determine SACICT
Craft Trend. The 4 designers will focus on the

Patterns and textures reflecting culture

and local craftsmanship have been adapted
to become contemporary through colorful
and color contrast designs. This is self
expression and blended with playfulness of
arts and geometrical graphic designs. Fresh
yarn lines in combination with delightful
shading are suitable for seasons influenced
by fashion from the east. Technologies have
been applied to create a variety of patterns,
printing, coating and weaving with functional
fabrics to meet the modern lifestyles
Although we have entered an industrial

era for decades, the charms of subtle
imperfect beauty of traditional craftsmanship
are still irreplaceable. Craftsman tools are
at the heart of recreation of such captivating
elements of the old days attraction blended
with modern day materials. Contemporary
designers opt to inherit ancestral artifice
through learning and practicing traditional
craftsman tools in creating works that
intriguingly integrate modernity: traditional
wax printing in the art of batik; hand-painted
textiles blending trendy patterns in the
fashion industry; Memphis geometrical
graphic design adopting lavish patterns and
colorful decoration for exotic new products;
and customary basketry production methods
incorporating modern patterns and colors
for ideal functionality.

For project development under the topic
of Art of Nature, the organizer proposed
the following design directions to be used
as a reference for design works.
4th Direction:
Using technologies to create work. It appears that the present technologies have
contributed to creating and developing
artists ideas from traditional production
to 3D printing technologies by computer.
1st Direction:
Presenting the essence of materials in
order to communicate and reflect the
identity of such found object.
2nd Direction:
Imitate nature by inventing products from
synthetic materials such as plastic through
craftsmanship to become products with
shapes and appearances reflecting on

Decode nature by observing the characteristics of nature such as patterns, colors,

The philosophical concept of designing
physical objects is the intention of environmentally
sustainable design with emotionally durable
design that reduces consumption and waste
of resources by increasing the durability of
relationships between people and products

These 3 collections express potential
of craftsmanship which have been created
by many rattan furniture skillful craftsmen
from various communities in Maha Sarakham
Province. Furthermore, we have attempted
to build concepts and work methods in order
to make people in communities realize the
importance of continuous development
efforts which can help maintain skillful
craftsmanship in materials and handicraft

products. Craft innovation can significantly
contribute to build a strong value and worth
of products. Glass craft is the collection that
we have got used to seeing traditional forms
of animal figures and souvenirs. With the
magnificence and experience of many Thai
craftsmen and rising demand from both
domestic and overseas buyers, the aspect
of new applications has to be created to
meet every need of todays customers. Craft
of stonework is another collection that is
integrated design with the old knowledge to
create products with a new look and feel.
Sometimes selected stone or color will
reflect in design and product development
to make products more contemporary. This
will help contribute to sustainability of craft
work and the knowledge of crafts and keep
us moving forward into the future.

generally designed and invented to meet
the essential applications only. These
products have therefore been developed in
order to mainly provide appropriate use of
the four requisites of life. In the beginning,
shapes of household items are simple,
functional and most efficient with a flair of
creativity blended with tradition that emerge
through selected materials and traditional
processing techniques. All these details can
help to increase fascination and spiritual
awareness to those simple shapes. Furthermore, the bright color, especially red, has
been selected to be the main color for this
collection to convey and represent flesh and
blood of creatures. It comes with shade of
blue which is the color of nature, sky, sea
and all living creatures.
Design work can be divided into four
main categories as follows:
TRIBE TIE
In the traditional lifestyle, accessories were
used only to cover the body but now they have
been created to become new accessories
and decorations which have been designed
and formed in different ways compared to
the original.
ETHNIC PLAID
Loincloth (pah-kah-mah) is a versatile fabric
that goes along with Thai people for a long
time. It is indicative of the need of a versatile
fabric and lifestyle.
CRIB
Whether you travel anywhere or any
community, an indispensable household
item is a hammock which can possibly bring
about some flair to the design of contemporary
home furnishings.
HARMA
Get inspiration from way of Harma Tribes
life that leads to pottery works and home
furnishings with luxury in simplicity.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously issued the Royal Decree for the establishment
of the SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand on September 20th, 2003. It was
announced in the government gazette on October 31st of the same year and effective on the next
day. The centre was therefore officially established as of November 1st, 2003 and called SACICT
(pronounced Sak-Sith) for short according to its initial.

OBJECTIVES
According to Section 7 of the Royal Decree
of the Establishment of the SUPPORT Arts and
Organization) B.E. 2546 (2003), SACICT was
established with the objectives to promote and
support the integration of vocations leading to
the creation of folk arts and crafts in line with
Her Majesty Queen Sirikits projects as well as
to promote their marketing domestically and
internationally.

SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Centre

towards local and international appreciation.
RATIONALE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT

The reason to establish SACICT is indicated
in the final part of the Royal Decree of the
Establishment of the SUPPORT Arts and
Organization) B.E. 2546 (2003) as followings:

the values and the tradition of originality and
refinement of Thai craftsman
MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE
SACICT is the governmental agency, a
nonprofit-making public organization, according
to the Act of Public Organization B.E. 2542
(1999). SACICT is managed to accomplish the
set objectives by Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
and overseen by the Executive Board under the
supervision of Minister of Commerce.
