EVENT OVERVIEW
Latin America has been witnessing increasing pace of investments in high risk industries and growing interest from international
markets leading to changes in regulatory frameworks, pricing structures and standardised policies.
The introduction of cleaner fuels and proposed regulations has a direct impact on Health, Safety, Security and Environmental policies
and the scope of the project. With such developments in midst of price uncertainties, there is a need to review the HSSE considerations
in the energy sector. Propagating the theme of HSSE & Sustainability strategies in midst of price pressures, 4th Annual LatAm HSSE
in Energy, scheduled for 2nd & 3rd of December, 2015 in Rio de Janeiro, brings a platform for the Latin American Energy market,
to discuss and build innovative, effective and flexible HSSE policies and processes. Industry leaders and government will meet to
recognise smart HSSE & Sustainability strategies under price pressures for higher productivity and sustained growth.

Born in the Netherlands and raised in Bolivia South America Berend van den Berg started
working in the power industry in 1986 with Stork Werkspoor Diesel which was later taken
over by Wartsila Corporation, a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions for
the marine and energy markets. From 1986 until 1999 Berend van den Berg worked for
Wartsila in markets spreading from Philippines, Indonesia, Africa and later on opening
offices in St. Maarten for the Caribbean an later on in Bogota Colombia and Quito
Ecuador to develop the power industry market in Latin America. In 1999 Berend van den
Berg formed Power Latin America Inc. developing energy (efficiency) projects focusing on:
Win Winscenarios.
Project Program / Cluster approach.
Defining owners projects requirements / objectives(often focused on cost reduction
and reducing overall carbon footprint).
Defining benchmarks by means of which the success of projects / programs is
judged.
In the year 2007 Power Latin America was contracted by the Ecuadorian national
state owned company to design and develop one of the most ambitious energy matrix
transformation programs worldwide in the upstream oil industry (named OGE&EE,
which stands for Optimizacin Generacin Elctrica & Eficiencia Energtica). In total
POWER LATINAMERICA developed and managed the implementation of power
generation facilities adding > 600 MW (the latest project included 342 MW power
generation), 35 substations, 520 km of underground electrical distribution system
distribution, 12 gas handling systems and > 100 km of gas pipelines reducing emissions
by > 600,000 tons / CO2 and increasing net oil production by > 5,500,000 barrels).
The OGE&EE project started with one project in an oil block whereby its success was
the motivation to transform it into an national oil sector energy efficiency program.
Based on an i) in-depth baseline scenario study, ii) Owners Project Requirements (OPR),
iii) Basis of Design, iv) scope of supply and corresponding definition of building blocks,
v) economic analysis (including sensitivity and what if analysis),etc. it developed
various business plans whereby the latest Plan de Desarrollo OGE&EE 20132017was
approved by Government Authorities in 2013. This program has received multiple
national and international recognitions not only based on the fact that OGE&EE is a
game changerin the industry but also the tremendous savings and CO2 reduction it
has generated.
