Project 2: Culture and Clay

Theme: Culture of Your Choice
In this project, you will use your research to create a culturally inspired tile.
Your goal is to create a ceramic work of art which showcases:
Cultural Inspiration
Relief
At Least 3 Different Textures
Resist or Sgraffito Technique
Contrast
Proper Use of Materials

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Complete the Culture and Clay Worksheet
Choose a culture and fill out the R
esearch a Culture

Worksheet. Using
inspiration from your research, create 4 thumbnail sketches of potential
designs. Choose your final design.
Step 2: Complete Your Cultural Tile
First, edit the shape of your tile if necessary. Then, begin transforming the surface of your tile by carving away
textures and adding areas of relief. Dont forget to use the resist technique or sgraffito technique in one area of
your tile. :) Throughout the creation process, be sure to reference the plans on your worksheet.
Step 3: Glaze Your Bisqueware
Sand any rough areas and wash your tile prior to glazing. Refer back to your Research a Culture Worksheet
where you brainstormed potential colors to glaze your artwork with. Refine your plan, and begin glazing your
bisqueware using proper glazing techniques. Be sure to add 2-3 layers of each color you use, allowing the
layers to dry in between each application. To finish your artwork, add 2 layers of clear glaze.
Step 5: Turn-In Your Project
Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit
folder on Schoology. You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your slides.
