Letter Assessment

Amanda Myers 2013

1. Print off a copy of the assessment sheet for

each child.
2. Give the child a highlighter.
3. Put the date on the assessment form.
4. Ask the child if they can tell you the first letter.
5. If the child knows it, have them highlight it with
the marker. On the assessment form, put a check
mark by that word.
6. Repeat with the next word.
7. If the child doesnt know the first few letters, ask
them if they know any of the letters on the page.
Mark down any that they tell you and let them
highlight them.
8. If the child still doesnt know any letters, ask
them to point to certain letters. If they can pick
out a given letter, put a dot on the data form
instead of a check mark.
9. Complete the chart on a regular basis to see
each childs progress. Challenge them to highlight
the whole page.

Kindergarten Letter
Assessment
for children with little or no verbal skills
Materials:
2 copies of the letter sheet
Assessment forms assessment sheet
- data collection form
Velcro
Eye gaze board or other method of displaying
choices

2. Laminate both copies. Use one copy as the

base. Use the other copy to cut out and Velcro onto
the base. Put in a binder for easy reference.
3. Print off the data collection form and/or the
assessment sheet.

Amanda Myers 2013

1. Make 2 copies of the letter sheet.

Instructions for the assessment sheet:

1. If the child is able to sign or make recognizable verbal attempts,
hold up a letter and ask the child what letter it is. If they give a
correct response put a check mark on the assessment sheet. If
the child gets the letter wrong or doesnt know it, place the
letter on the eye gaze board or table depending on the childs
ability to make choices.
2. Depending on the child, when you have 2 to 4 letters on the eye
gaze board or other method of displaying choices, ask the child
to find a certain letter or sound (depending on which one you are
testing for).
3. Record the childs response on the assessment sheet with a dot
(this will distinguish it from a verbal or signed response).

Amanda Myers 2013

4. Repeat the assessment on a regular basis (daily if possible).

Using the alphabet chart assessment sheet, you will be able to
see the childs progress over time.

Instructions for the letter assessment for children with little or no

verbal skills:
1. Depending on the child, place 2 to 4 letters on the eye gaze
board or other method of displaying choices.
2. Ask the child to find a certain letter.
3. Accept an eye gaze, point or attempt to reach for a letter. You
will know your child best and how they make a selection.

4. On the assessment form enter the target letter, the choices given
(only put 2 if you gave 2 choices) and a correct or incorrect
response. It may also be helpful to circle the response chosen in
order to analyse the errors.
5. Repeat the same letters over several trials to ensure mastery.

6. Repeat with similar letters (e.g. p, d, b, q) to ensure mastery.
