Traveling naturalist series

elanie Shipman draws on her many of experiences with nature, from


serving as an environmental educator for the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife
Refuge to her current position as co-director of the Audobon Center of the North Woods,
to bring her Traveling Naturalist programs to a wide audience. Be prepared for an
animated, engaging and informative time! Each class is $2, due two days prior to the
program date.
Bear AwarePolar Bears: Monday, February 11, 1 p.m. Polar bears are the largest
of the marine mammals and are devoted mothers. They may also soon be the first
large mammal to become extinct due to global climate change. Learn how polar bears
compare to other bear species, including their adaptations to the far north climate, their
hunting habits and how native cultures have related to them throughout time. These
early warning systems for ocean health and global climate change have many tales to

Wolves of Land: Monday, March 25, 1 p.m. Though genetically identical to domestic
dogs, wolves are among the most misunderstood of wild animals. Separate myth from
reality with Melanie, who recently returned from yet another wolf adventure. Learn if
wolves really attack humans, if they are wanton killers, if they howl at the moon. Enjoy
demos, video clips, props and slides, all of which provide a window into the world of

Navigating Medicare

he following scale is an approximate guide of the


activity level of a program or trip. The scale is based on
the level of activity and physical ability needed to perform
that activity.
On the scale, one star is the least demanding and is
appropriate for all activity levels and five stars is the most
demanding, requiring a high level of physical fitness and
mobility.

Historical travelogue series

resenter Dan Hartmann is a military historian


who has taught college and community education
classes. A light lunch will be served following the
presentation.
Each travelogue is $2 for the presentation or $6 for
presentation and light lunch, due four business days prior to
the program date.
American Revolution War: Wednesday, February
27, 10:30 a.m. Join us for an armchair tour of the
great battles of the American Revolution in historical
order. There will be a focus on George Washington as
commander and the Continental Army. Travel from the
first engagements of the war at Lexington, Concord and
Bunker Hill to the surrender at Yorktown eight years later.
A photo presentation of specific battlefields as they are
today will help you visualize the American Revolution as
it happened and understand how the Continental Army

Dakota War of 1862: Wednesday, March 20, 10:30
a.m. The Dakota War of 1862, also known as the Sioux
Uprising, was an armed conflict between the United
States and several bands of the Eastern Dakota Sioux
in Minnesota. It began on August 17, 1862, along the
Minnesota River in southwest Minnesota and ended on
December 26, 1862, in Mankato, Minnesota. In April
1863, the Dakota Indians were expelled from Minnesota
to Nebraska and South Dakota. Course #28650

pay by cash, check or credit card (Visa, MasterCard and
Discover are accepted).
Mail-in: Send registrations to Minnetonka Senior
Services, 14600 Minnetonka Blvd, Minnetonka, MN
55345, with your name, address, phone number, name of
the class that you are registering for and your payment.
By phone: Registrations are accepted over the phone
(952) 939-8393 with a Visa, MasterCard or Discover.

Classes cannot be pro-rated. You must register and pay
for all programs before class, program and/or trip start date.

Class Cancellation

Cancellation of a class requires at least two full working


days before the start date of the class. Some classes may be
cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. 2

Beginning & Intermediate


Yoga Nancy Holasek

hese gentle Yoga classes are geared toward the


older adult with lots of stretching and warm-ups. The
yoga postures help build strength, stamina, and increase
flexibility and range of motion. Guided breath-work and
visualization help to release, relax, and restore the body, and
calm the mind.
Chair Supported Yoga:
Most of the class is done while seated on a chair. Some
standing and balance postures are done, using the chair as a
prop or support if necessary.
Intermediate Yoga Class:
This class includes standing and balance postures.
Students should have the ability to get down to and up
from the floor for postures completed while on the belly or
backside of the body. Many seated postures are also done on
the floor. Please bring a yoga mat or towel to class. 2

Part II Financing and taxing of the manor houses


and castles of Great Britain has inspired many creative
financial ideas. Lets visit some of those manor houses,

Trip reservation information


To register, call (952) 939-8393.
Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m . 4:30
p.m. Each caller can reserve up to four spaces on a trip.
Payment is due at the time of registration: Checks payable
to MSS. Minnetonka Senior Services, 14600 Minnetonka
Boulevard, Minnetonka, MN 55345. Visa, MasterCard
and Discover are accepted.
Trips are planned for senior residents of Minnetonka
who are given first priority at registration time. Only
Minnetonka residents can sign up on the first day; others
may register on the second day.
Listed bus/van pickup locations and times are tentative
depending on actual registration. Registrants will be
notified only if changes are necessary.
Trip cancellation policy: Refunds, minus a $5
administration cost, can only be given if you cancel before
the payment deadline. If a cancellation is made after the
payment deadline, the participant is refunded/credited for
everything but $5 only if a replacement is found.

St. Paul sinners & saints

eet a costumed gangster guide and venture


through the streets of St. Paul. Explore its roaring
hoodlum heyday with crooks, crime and corruption in the
1920s and 1930s. Revel an almost like home cooked lunch
at Keys Caf. Menu includes turkey dinner with mashed
potatoes, gravy, stuffing, vegetables, cranberrires, bread,
beverage and dessert.
Following lunch enjoy a guided tour of the Cathedral of
Saint Paul. The Cathedral is situated on the highest point in
St. Paul. It was designed by the architect E.L. Masquerary to
resemble the medival cathedrals of Europe. The first services
held at the Cathedral were held on March 28, 1915.

Mason City architecture

ason City, Iowa, is full of architectural


wonder. Enjoy rolls and coffee at Trumbles in Albert
Lea. Tour the Historic Park Inn, designed by American
architect Frank Llyod Wright and built in 1910. The Park
Inn hotel is the last Wright designed hotel in the world
and a complete renovation. Savor a lunch of chicken salad
croissant, wild rice soup, beverage and dessert at the historic
Decker Home B&B, built in the 1890s. Following lunch
arrive at the Architectural Interpretive Center to tour the
Stockman House. After the tour, visit the local ice cream
shop. Pit stop at the Trails Travel Center.

Stadium enjoying the weather, great baseball and good
food. As part of the baseball experience, participants will
receive $10 Saints Bucks to purchase lunch. The group will
have infield reserved seats for a game between the Saints and
the Lincoln Saltdogs.
The St. Paul Saints baseball team is a member of the
North Division of the American Association of Independent
Professional Baseball. They have played their home games at
Midway Stadium since 1993.

a docent-lead tour of the basement, first and second floors
and the carriage house. Pack your binoculars, there is a
possibility of catching a glimpse of the tall ships that come
in for the Parade of Sails. There will be a stop for fast food
on the way home (on your own).

Kids Fest is February 10

Kids Fest Sunday, February 10, from 12 to 3:30
p.m. at the Minnetonka Civic Center Campus, 14600
Minnetonka Boulevard, Minnetonka.
All activities are free and include dog sled rides, bingo
with prizes, magic shows, face painting, ice sculpture
demonstrations, smores by the fire, crafts, entertainment,
open swimming, open batting cages, open skating and
more.
Please bring canned goods to help area families in need.
Collections will be received at the Minnetonka Community
Center.
For ease of parking, a free van shuttle will run every 15
minutes among the three facilities at which activities take
place: the Minnetonka Community Center, the Ice Arena
and Williston Fitness Center, located at 14509 Williston
Drive, Minnetonka. Visitors may park at any of these
facilities for the afternoon.

This is not a league. Rackets are provided for newcomers
to test the game. Those who plan to play on a regular basis
are asked to buy their own racket.

The Landing Shop


Located at 11280 Wayzata Boulevard, at the
northwest corner of I-394 and Hopkins Crossroad/
Cty. Rd. 73 in Westridge Market.
The Landing Shop offers handmade items
including toys, doll clothes and furniture, baby
items, kitchen items and much, much more.
The shop is open Wednesdays through Saturdays,
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours on
Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Phone: (763) 5914868.
Interested in selling your handmade items at the
shop? Shop consignors must be at least 55 years
old and reside in Minnetonka. Consignors may
also volunteer at the shop. The shop is currently
looking for someone who would be able to sell
some woodworking items. For more information
