Living to Inspire

field is what I feared most. I absolutely dreaded

making presentations and wasnt sure if people
would respond well to me. I joined IISE out of
guilt that my college experience would solely be
centered academics. Making relationships was in
the back of my mind.

As an introverted gamer who only focused on

playing baseball, joining an organization never
crossed my mind, in high school at least. At school,
getting good grades was my only gratification.
Entering college, I expected more of the same. I
was content leaving for class and going straight
home afterwards, and I never expected it to
change. I became complacent.
Only a life lived for
others is a life
worthwhile.
Albert Einstein

I declared Industrial and

Systems Engineering as
my future because I had
a knack for improving
anything, however, the

That guilt ended up inspiring the best decision I

have ever made in my life. IISE has developed my
confidence, discipline, but most importantly, my
passion for helping others. You all have made a
significant impact on me, and I hope this
organization inspires you to grow as it has for me.
I couldnt have asked
for a better team of
officers. Deirman, Tony,
Runzhi, Nikki Isaac and
Nguyen, you are our
backbone of IISE!
I am so proud to be a part of this organization and
grateful to represent you all as your President.

Fall Highlights Runzhi Lin

Semester Kickoff
September 14

The IISE Board of Officers hosted a kickoff

meeting to welcome everyone back for the fall
semester! The meeting begun with a brief
introduction to the newly elected officers. This
was proceeded by a presentation pertaining the
following:
officer
expectations,
upcoming
professional
events,
and
social
event
brainstorming. Finally, through a raffle event, a
few attendees of this event walked away with
amazing prizes the club had prepared!

NASA Tour
October 26

Students had the opportunity to experience two

branches of NASA, the Metals Fabrication Shop
and the Machining and Instrumentation Branch. In
these areas, NASA fabricates aeronautical and
space flight hardware. Moreover, students had
the opportunity to network with host, Roxana
Rodriquez, who is an Industrial Engineer at NASA.

The highlight of
the tour was the
simulation section
because we were
all able to go in
the simulation
room to explore
how it is like to
work in such a
confined space

Intuitive Surgical Tour

November 18

During the tour, students visited the production

floor where different components of the Da Vinci
Surgical System are been built. Follow by a
networking
session with
their SJSUIISE Alumni
employees
and Intuitive
Surgical's
University
Recruiter
Rachel Kaufman to learn about the work culture
and what is it like to work as an engineer at
Intuitive Surgical. Additionally, students were
given the chance to ask questions and receive tips
for employment and a quick way to apply for
available positions.
It was legit to see how a manufacturing process
worked and how 5S was being implemented. I think the
coolest part was actually using a $1.8 M machine and
realizing how easy it was to use. Oh, and the food was
bomb. -Dhanush Thota

Thank you to everyone who attended our events this semester!

represented and showcased the ideals of the
major to colleagues that were unfamiliar with the
subject matter.
A highlight of the conference was the speech
delivered by long-time MESA alumni and NASA
astronaut, Commander Victor Glover.
Dressed in his astronaut suit, blue pajamas as
he would call them, Glover filled the room with a
positive, energetic atmosphere as he expressed
how he associated engineering with being a train
conductor as a young child. In his speech, he
talked about his journey of how he got to where
he is today with the aid of his positive drive. He
also encouraged students to be always willing to
learn as that is an essential tool for progress in
the engineering field and in life.

Being in the field of engineering is tough for

many. With a solid, burning passion and drive, one
can accomplish many goals if one sets both their
heart and mind to it.
For the 13th annual MESA Student Leadership
Conference, a total of 200 MESA students from
various colleges across the state participated in
a weekend retreat (from October 14th to October
15th) at the Santa Clara Marriott Hotel. This
gathering aimed to hone the students leadership
and communication skills with various activities,
ranging from an elevator pitch challenge to
participation in the SoCal Gas LEGO challenge
competition. Other activities included: social
games that and workshops dedicated to
developing essential skills to prepare for the
workforce.
As one of the few Industrial and Systems
Engineering (ISE) students at the conference, I

Emphasizing the importance of soft skills and

life-long learning, Victor Glover gave an amazing
and inspirational speech encouraging all future
engineering students to become the new face of
STEM.
Wouldnt want to miss a chance to take a picture with
Victor Glover! Thanks for the incredibly powerful and
inspiring speech!

What youre doing is so

vital, so important to
California and the planet,
and MESA is helping you
get there.

What
inspired you
to join
IISE?

As most of you know, I transferred to

engineering from Computer Science.
However, when I went to talk to
advisors of my top 3 engineering
majors, Dr. Dessouky was very warm
and welcoming. My first meeting with
him was direct, but he made me feel
confident enough to choose ISE as my
future career.

Whats your
favorite

why?
All-time
Jam?

My most memorable experience would

be when I was chosen as 2015-16
Member of the Year, factory tours,
mentor sessions, bake sales, and the
IISE Conference trip to Disneyland.

I joined IISE because this

is my first semester at
SJSU and I wanted to get
involved and meet new
people in my major.

I have attended a few

events so far, but
volunteering at the
CityTeam soup kitchen was
a fun experience and felt
good to give back.

Family
I joined IISE in the hopes of
being able to help create a great
community. A community where
we IISEs could create friends
and colleagues that would be
with us, in and throughout, all
walks of life.

My most memorable experience

is just hanging out in the
clubroom working hard and
playing hard, many days of 13
and Monopoly Deal.

These represent my social media

presence affectively and helps my
audience take my posts lightheartedly.

It's an emoji that I use

often and think is the
cutest!
