Assignment # 5
Due date: 23rdSeptember 2016

(1) Water flows steadily through the reducing pipe bend shown in the figure
below. Known conditions are p1 = 300kPa, D1 = 30cm, V1 = 2m/s,
p2 = 150kPa, and D2 = 10cm. Compute the axial force which must be
resisted by the flange bolts. Neglect the effects of the bend and the water
weight.

(2) When a jet strikes an inclined fixed plate, as shown in figure below, it
breakups into two jets at sections 2 and 3 of equal velocity V = Vjet
but unequal fluxes Q at section 2 and (1 )Q at section 3, being a
fraction. Assume that the flow is frictionless and can exert no tangential
force on the plate. Use this condition to solve for , as a function of the
plate angle . Density of the fluid is and area of the jet is A.

(3) Water from a d = 2cm diameter tap falls vertically down in the form of a
circular cross section jet. The water flow rate is Q = 0.01m3 /s. Calculate
the velocity and jet diameter variations with height assuming frictionless
flow and neglecting surface tension. Neglect the effect of the ambient air.

Comment on the effect of the inclusion of surface tension in the analysis

(assume the flow to be perturbation free smooth flow).
A circular plate is forced down at a steady velocity U against a flat
surface. A frictionless and incompressible fluid of density fills the gap
h(t). Assume the thickness to be much smaller compared to the radius of
the plate, R. The radial velocity in the gap can be assumed to be uniform
across the gap. Write the radial velocity of the fluid in the gap in terms of
the downward velocity of the plate, U , gap width h and radial coordinate,
r, and determine the rate of change of the radial velocity at any radial
location, r. Compute the pressure distribution in the gap assuming the
pressure at the exit to be atmospheric (gage pressure 0).
Calculate the rate at which water issues out of a short horizontal pipe of
diameter 2cm connected to a tank with water level 1m (above the pipe).
The temperature near the surface of a cliff varies with height(z) and time
(t) as T = T (z, t). Write down an expression for rate of temperature
change, with respect to time, for a climber climbing up the cliff at a
velocity u.
