, headquartered in Houston Texas, is a global provider of manufactured technologies

and applied products to the energy industry. Forums over 2,200 employees provide the products and technologies
essential to solving the increasingly complex challenges of the oil and gas industry. Forums Production and
Infrastructure Division, provides engineered process and production systems, measurement and monitoring systems,
construction and field services, and a full range of valve and other flow control products.

EDGE desalters/dehydrators utilize AC-type electrostatic

coalescing for the efficient removal of contaminants.
Electrostatic coalescing is accomplished when the electrode
grids apply a high voltage to the oil/water mixture, forcing it
to separate. As the water is washed out, so are many of the
undesirable solids.
The EDGE Design
EDGE Technology is available in two different designs,
the 3G-SV and 3G-TV, which provide desalter options for
optimization to individual applications. The 3G-SV design
includes two electrified electrode grids and one ground grid.
This design minimizes transactor (electric power supply)
capacity and power consumption. The 3G-TV design includes
three electrified electrode grids and no ground grids. This

design maximizes the desalting performances and feedstock

capacity of the desalter vessel. EDGE desalters are designed
to utilize the recommended demulsifier and solids-wetting
chemicals of most chemical suppliers.
EDGE technology provides optimized performance resulting
in greater long term value such as:
Reduced salt carryover that results in minimized
corrosion, chemical costs, equipment fouling,
maintenance costs and unplanned shutdowns.
Decreased water carryover that leads to lower energy
costs, stabilized unit operations, increased crude
throughput, minimized slop oil production and reduced
waste water treatment costs.
Minimized oil undercarry that results in reduced product
losses and slop treatment costs.
Reduced solids carryover that leads to less equipment
fouling and foaming.
Less power consumption resulting from inlet distributor
injection of crude/water emulsion below the high intensity
electrode grids instead of directly in between them.

EDGE (Enhanced Deep-Grid Electrical) desalters and

dehydrators utilize a unique technology that provides
the most effective solution for removal of contaminants
such as sodium, calcium and magnesium chloride from
crude oil. If not removed, these salts will hydrolyze to form
hydrochloric acid which is the primary cause of corrosion
failures within crude unit equipment.

Inlet Header
Even distribution of the oil/water emulsion across the entire
vessel length produces a laminar profile. This emulsion is
injected just above the oil/water interface, thereby maximizing
crude oil residence time and improving upset tolerance.

Low Intensity Field

The majority of the water is separated in the first low
intensity electrical field, thereby reserving the high intensity
fields for more difficult-to-resolve emulsions. This minimizes
the water content in the high-intensity electrical field, thus
reducing power consumption.

Effluent Water Header

This header withdraws water and some solids along the
entire length of the vessel, thus maximizing water-phase
residence time and reducing the oil content of the effluent
water.
Mud Wash Header
Spray nozzles are utilized in the unique mud wash headers
design to effectively fluidize solids accumulated in the
bottom of the vessel.

High Intensity Field

This field provides for the removal of final traces of water
from the crude, improving performance. Increased depth
of the high intensity fields provides
excellent coalescence of small and
highly emulsified water droplets.

High Voltage Entrance System

This voltage entrance system is
doubly protected by two bushings
located in the oil-filled housing.

EDGE

Vessel
The entire hydrocarbon volume of the vessel is exposed
to high voltage AC electrical fields. Four contiguous AC
electrical fields span from the oil/water interface to the top of
the vessel.
