I.

Objectives:
1. Setup the function generator to generate AC signals.
2. Use the oscilloscope to measure AC signals II.

II.

Parts List:
1. NI ELVIS II+ Workstation
2. Resistors: 1 k and 10 k III.

III.

Lab Procedures
1. Launch Multisim.
2. Under File New choose NI ELVIS II design then click Create
3. The below workspace will be created.
4. The Oscilloscope is located in the top left center of the workspace
5. The Function Generator, FG, is located in the center left side of the
workspace.
6. In order to adjust the Function Generator settings double click on the
Function Generator symbol.
7. NI ELVISmx Function Generator XLV6 will appear as shown below.
8. You can change various settings on the Function generator such as Signal
type Frequency Amplitude
9. Create a direct connection between the Function Generator output and the
Oscilloscopes CH0 inputs as follows:

10. Adjust the function generators output to a frequency to 1 kHz and an

amplitude of 1VPP.
11. Note that CH0 scale is set to 1Volts/Div. Also note the readings on the
oscilloscopes screen for the frequency and peak-to-peak voltage.

12. Take a screen shot of the display and discuss in the results section of your
lab report the following cases:
a. Adjusting the voltage scale on the oscilloscope for CH0 to:
i. 2 Volts/Div
ii. 500 mV/Div
b. Adjusting the time base scale on the oscilloscope for CH0 to:
i. 2 ms/Div
ii. 500 s/Div
c. Adjusting the function generator to:
i. A Frequency of 10 kHz.
1. Set the time base to
a. 1 ms/Div
b. 100 s/Div
c. 50 s/Div
ii. A Frequency of 100 Hz.
1. Set the time base to
a. 10 ms/Div
b. 5 ms/Div
c. 2 ms/Div

13. On the oscilloscope, adjust the horizontal position and note the changes in
your lab report on the displayed signal

14. On the oscilloscope, adjust the triggering level and note the changes in
your lab report on the displayed signal

15. On the oscilloscope, check Cursors On

16. On the oscilloscope, note the readings of the cursors.

IV. Assignment:
Submit your lab report to your instructor following the template
available in your course shell.
In your lab report, make sure to address your conclusions regarding
i. Does changing the voltage scale of the displayed signal on
the oscilloscope change the actual peak-to peak value of the generated
signal?
Answer = No it does not. The only thing that this does is
change the ratio that each division is worth. For example, if
the division is worth 1 Volt and the peak reaches the top of that
division and then the scale is changed to 2 Volts and the peak
only reaches half way up, the peak-to-peak value is still 1 Volt.

ii. Does changing the time base scale of the displayed signal on
the oscilloscope change the actual frequency of the generated signal?
Answer = No it does not. Similarly, to the first answer, when
time base scale is changed the only thing that is changed how

EET 111 Unit 1 Oscilloscope Familiarization Page 12

the signal is being viewed. The actual frequency is not being
changed.
iii. In step 13. C., for a frequency of 10 kHz, which time base is
better in viewing the signal, the 1 ms/Div, 100 s/Div or the 50
s/Div? Why?
Answer = Personally I like 50 s/Div because it provides me
with the easiest view of the frequency. The peak to peak is
easy to see, the time scale does not smash the waves together,
but you could say the same thing for 100 s/Div but not really
the 1 ms/Div because it smashes the waves together to much.
It is difficult to see the details.
