NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was first published in 1969 and revised in 1987 and subsequently in 1991. The
standard is being revised in light of the experience gained by its implementation & manufacturing.
Themajorchangesinthisrevisionare:
(a) Choiceofrawmaterialsusedforconstructionhavebeenwidened
(b) Paintingrequirementhasbeenmodifiedtoaccommodatecurrentindustrypractices.
Security equipment play a vital role in the safety of cash, jewellery, important documents, etc, in establishments
such as banks, hotels, commercial organizations, shops, etc. Safe deposit locker cabinets are designed for
convenientdepositandstorageofpreciousarticles,documentsandthelikeofalesseewhichmightotherwiseget
anaccessbyundesirablepersonsduringanattemptedrobbery.
Inreportingtheresultsofatestoranalysismadeinaccordancewiththisstandard,ifthefinalvalue,observed
orcalculatedistoberoundedoff,itshallbedoneinaccordancewithIS2:1960'Rulesforroundingoffnumerical
values(revised)'.

1SCOPE
This standard specifies the general requirements of materials and details of construction of safe deposit locker
cabinets which afford security to precious articles, documents or any item that needs to be protected from
unauthorisedaccess.
2REFERENCES
TheIndianStandardslistedinAnnexAcontainprovisionswhichthroughreferenceinthistext,constituteprovision
ofthisstandard.Atthetimeofpublication,theeditionsindicatedwerevalid.Allstandardsaresubjecttorevision,
and parties to agreements based on this standard area encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the
mostrecenteditionsofthestandardsgiveninAnnexA.
3TYPES
3.1Safedepositlockercabinetsshallpreferablybeofthefollowingtypes:
a)Type1Containing75lockers,
b)Type1AContaining90lockers,
c)Type2Containing52lockers,
d)Type2AContaining51lockers,and
e)Type3Containing32lockers.
f)Type4Anyotherconfiguration
3.2 Any other size and/or configuration may also be manufactured, provided the cabinet meets all other
requirementsofthestandard.SuchcabinetsshallbedesignatedasType4.
3.3Allcabinetsoftype4shallbeclearlydesignatedsoastoindicatethenumberandcombinationoflockers.The
designationshallbegiveninthefollowingmanner:
Type4/totalno.Oflockers/nooflockersofeachsizewiththeirdesignationsusedinthisspecifications.
E.g.Cabinetwithtotal12lockers,with6nosAlockers,3nos2Alockersand3nos4Alockersshallbedesignated

6D E S I G N S ANDMANUFACTURE
6.1 Lockers shall be secured with unpickable dual control keylock or multirow pin cylinder (MPC) lock or
combinationofMPCandlevertypelock.Theyshallbeselflockingsothatthecustodiandoesnothavetorelockthe
locker with his (custodians) key after the lessee has locked it. The mechanism of the lock shall be such that the
lesseeshallnotbeabletowithdrawhiskeyunlessthelockerhasbeenrelockedfully.Oncethelesseehaslocked
thelocker,thesamecannotbeopenedunlessthecustodianturnsinhiskeytotakeoffhiscontrol.Nokeyofone
lock shall apply to any other lock except its own. The lessee's as well as the custodian's keys shall be made of
stainlesssteeloranyothermetal/alloyhavingnoncorrosiveproperties.
6.1.1Themanufacturerofsafedepositlockercabinetsshallbeanoriginalequipmentmanufactureroflocksusedin
thecabinet.Thekeycuttingandkeypermutationgenerationprocessshallbecomputerised.Outsourcingofthelock
orkeymanufacturingprocess(exceptkeyblankmanufacturing)shallnotbepermitted,eitherwhollyorpartially.

6.2Thelocksshallbeinterchangeablesothatwhenalockerisvacatedbyalessee,thelockmaybeandshouldbe
immediatelytransferredtoanotherlockerandviceversa.
6.3Provisionshallbemadetofitontheinsideofthelockerdooranotherstrongandunpickablelockofthelessee
ifsodesiredbythelessee.Thirdkeyholeoftherenter'slock,whenthelockisnotfittedwillbeprotectedbya
plateorbysecureplug,makingtheinsideofthelockerinaccessibletoaccessfromtheoutside.Anoutsidepad
lockingarrangementorhaspshallalsobeprovidedifaskedbythecustomer.
6.4Thelockandtheshutterarrangementshallbesuchthatlockingboltofthelockprojectingintolockerorthe
lockinghole,asthecasemaybe,shallhavesufficientprotectionagainsttamperingwithcrowbarorotherhand
tools.
6.5 Locking bolt of the lock shall be strong enough in both the directions of its section ( that is, Ixx and IYY) to
provideresistanceagainstbending.
6.6Lockingboltofthelockwhenlockisinlockedposition,shallhavedepthofengagementofnotlessthan
5mm.
7WORKMANSHIP
7.1 All dents, burrs and sharp edges shall be removed from the various components and they shall be
thoroughlydegreasedandcleanedofrustandscalepreferablybysandblastingorbynormalpicklingprocess.
7.2Tolerance
Gaparoundthedoorplateonfront,topandbottomshallnotbemorethan1mm,ifthereisdirectthrough
passage.Whereverthereisnodirectthroughpassagethegapshallbemaximum1.5mm.
7.3Weldedjointsshallbefreefromwelddefectsandweldingslags.
8TESTING
8.1Thelockerunitshallbetestedforitsperformanceagainstburglariousattackswithcommonhandtoolssuch
asspannerspliers,chisels,punches,hammers(notexceeding1kginmass),crowbars(maximum500mmin
lengthand15mmindiameter)andscrewdrivers.Thelockerunitsshallbeabletowithstandsuchattacks
successfullyforaperiodofnotlessthan3minutes.
8.2Eachlockerunitshallbetestedtoensurethatthecustomer'skeydoesnotcomeoutunlessthe
shutteriscompletelyclosedandthelockisfullylocked.
9MARKING
9.1Allthesafedepositlockercabinetsshallbemarkedwiththemanufacturersnameortrademark,the
typeandyearofmanufacture.
9.1.1CertificationMarking
SafedepositlockercabinetsmayalsobemarkedwiththeStandardMark.
9.2Thelockersshallbeseriallynumberedandmarkedontheoutsideoflockerdoorsbythe
manufacturerasdesiredbythecustomer.
9.3MarkingonKeys
Thekeysshallbemarkedwithanidentificationnumberwhichshallnotbethesameastheserialnumber
ofthecorrespondinglocker.
10 PACKING
Allthecomponentpartsshallbepackedinsuchawaythatnodamageiscausedtothemduringtransit.Thekeys
shallbesealedinabox/pouchanddispatchedseparatelytothepurchaserinperson.
