Hi, my name is Mag-
gie and I’m a 2.6 year old
lively labrador spaniel
mix and this is my story.
My owner Holly got me
when I was three months
old at the Brockton Blue
Dog Shelter. Back then I
was scared of everything,
except for other dogs. People
had always seemed to fail me
thus far. When I was a puppy I
came up from South Carolina
with my brothers, went to Bos-
ton for some final check ups
and ended up in Brockton. The
people there treated us swell,
and my brothers and I were
glad to get that long, arduous
ride over with. We were still
in a predicament, though, as
we needed a permanent loving
home. My brothers and I were
shy and scared, but they were
adapting far better than I was.
Because of my fear of people,
nobody wanted to adopt me. I
wasn’t in the shelter long until
my owner came and looked at
me, she told me she loved me

at first site. All I needed was a puppy. I’m big and brave
lots of love, walks and some now and have lots of energy,
time to come out of my shell. but I still don’t like the car
too much. My owner
showed me how to love
and trust people for the

when they are too idle and not chal-
lenged.  While mealtime typically consists of
owners filling their pets’ dog bowls with food,
they should be offering them a range of activities
that push their pets to earn their food, not just
expect it, such as food puzzles. Food puzzles are

What misconception do
many pet owners have about
veterinarians that you would
like to help dispel? I think
some people think that our in-
centive to perform diagnostic
testing on healthy pets is for
financial reasons.
When in fact, there is a lot
of information we can obtain
from diagnostics, not just on
sick patients. Just like in hu-
man medicine, early disease
detection is very important in
preventing the progression of
diseases and intervening be-
fore it is too late. Despite pop-
ular belief, normal test results
can be useful information!
Who is someone you ad-
mire who works with/for
animals? Jane Goodall.
If you could own any
type of animal you haven't
so far, what animal would
you choose? I love birds. Al-
though, I don’t think I would
like to own one. I enjoy
watching them in their natural
environment, especially the
seabirds soaring on the wind
currents and skimming along
the ocean waves.
What is a common mis-
conception that patients'
owners make? That age is a
disease. Age is not a disease. It
does predispose us – pets and
people – to more conditions/
diseases. But, age alone does
not usually cause pets to have
a poor appetite or not want to
play like they used too or jump
up into the bed and sleep with
you anymore. It is important
to have pets examined annual-
ly (at least) to make sure there
is nothing physically or meta-
bolically contributing to these
subtle changes you notice over
time.
What is it that makes An-

we were popular in German
communities and known as

a German Spitz. After years
of breeding the white dogs,
we became distinctly differ-
ent from the original dogs. At
this time we became known
as the American Spitz. Part
of this new name was due to
patriotism during World War
I. Later, we had another name
change and Eskimo was added
to our name. Although we
had no real connection to the
Eskimos, other than the simi-
lar look to their sled dogs this
became our official name. It is
believed that the Eskimo name
came from one of the first ken-
nels to breed us.
Contrary to what our name
suggests, we were not bred as
a sled dog. We were originally
bred to guard and protect both
people and property. We were

over herds and even children.
We are sometimes referred to
as “the poor man’s watchdog”,
as we are not very large and in-
timidating, but can sound like
we are. We are very alert and
protective and sometimes have
trouble with the “quiet” com-
mand, however nothing and
no one gets by me! As circus
performers, we were favored
for our swift agility, extreme
intelligence and our sparkling
white coats. We worked well
with the other performers and
animals and were eager to
learn new tricks and routines.
We performed with Barnum
and Bailey and with Ringling
Brothers. One of my famous
ancestors, Stout’s Pal Pierre,
was famous for walking the
tightrope in the Cooper Broth-
er’s Railroad Circus in 1917.
The travelling circuses helped
us become a beloved breed
throughout America, where
we gained popularity at a time
when we were at war with
our country of origin which
led to our name changes. It
is believed that most of us
can actually trace our lineage
back directly to these circus
performers. I haven’t learned
the tightrope yet, but I can

so easy and fun, not as
hard as learning “quiet”.
There are three recognized
sizes of “Eskies” toy (9-12
inches), miniature (over 12 to
15 inches) and standard (15-19
inches). I am a miniature and
I weigh 24 pounds, I am just a
little guy but I am pretty mus-
cular and very quick when in
motion. Eskies are all white
or white with biscuit cream. I
have cream colored ears. We
all have white eyelashes and
black points at the lips, nose
and eye rims. . My oval eyes
are soft brown and very alert.
Under my sparkling white li-
on-like ruff double coat, I have
pink skin. I will shed once
or twice a year, so brushing
daily is required during that
time. Other than that we do
not require special grooming,
in fact any trimming (except
at the pads of the feet) is pe-

alligators. Consider the scaly
legs, upright stance and egg-

T
he first annual South Shore Pet Expo was held Sun-
day, June 6 at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.
The festival featured quality vendors of pet
themed and pet friendly products, hand crafted items, art, jewel-
ry, food, live animal demonstrations, pony rides, exhibits, spon-
sors products and services and a contest to crown South Shore’s
Dog Of The Year!
All funds raised will benefit Fairy DogParents 501c3 regis-
tered nonprofit organization that prevents dogs from being sur-
rendered to shelters by providing temporary assistance to Spon-
sor Dogs and their DogParents with the need for food, medical
needs and general wellness.

Brown tells her clients to “al-

ercise during periods of high
humidity.” Bring along a pet
water bottle for drinking and a
light spray bottle to keep your
pet’s fur cool. Long-haired pets
often appreciate a trim during
the summer months. Regular
grooming and brushing can
help alleviate heat symptoms.
Sometimes, no matter how
hard we try, our pets become
overheated. There are several
ways to help them cool down.
Mather suggests slowly cool-
ing your pet with a hose or in
a kiddie pool. The inguinal
area under the legs is a blood
flow area, and slowly cooling
that spot can help. Russo and
the Kingston Animal Hospital
recommend applying towels
soaked in cold water to the
hairless areas of the body. The
most important thing is to im-
mediately transport your pet
to the vet’s office. Pomerance
recommends listening to your
instincts regarding heatstroke,
possible insect or snake bites
and other significant illness or
injuries. “Pick up the phone
and call,” she says. “That is
what your vet is there for; they
want to provide assistance and
do the best they can for your
pet.” Because you know your
pet best, it is critical you lis-
ten to your gut and act accord-
ingly.
Parks and
recreation
Barbecues and picnics,
lazy days spent lakeside,
lounging by the pool, or enjoy-
ing the soft ocean waves are
just a few of summer’s offer-
ings. If you are anything like
me, everything is better with
your pet by your side. These
days, pet-friendly beaches and
parks abound. Take a hike or
a bike ride and you are likely

of thought.
Brown states
emphatically,
“The beach is
no place for a dog.” She does
have a point. Think about the
topography of your typical
beachfront — hot, flat sand
with little or no tree cover.
We’ve already established pets
heat up faster than we do and
cannot adequately release the
heat through sweat. It is prob-
ably better to leave your pet at
home and fill up a small pool
to enjoy when you return and
can monitor your pet’s swim.
If you cannot resist the call of
the ocean, take precautions.

less intense. Limit the amount
of playtime. Mather compares

children. Just as children are
distracted by the fun, dogs get
caught up in the moment and
don’t realize it is time to rest.
Russo concurs. “Some dogs
will jump in the water until the
point of exhaustion,” he said.

lect a quality float that will not
disconnect when hauling a wet
dog from the water. Pomer-
ance also advocates the use of
life vests and flotation devices.
Currently the rescue mom to
20 dogs, Pomerance would not
consider bringing her pets on a
boat without a protective vest.
One final word about wa-
ter sports — when the swim-
ming and boating are finished,
thoroughly rinse your pet with
clean water. You want to be
sure your pet brings the water
home, not chlorine or bacte-
ria.
If water sports are not
for you, there are plenty of ac-
tivities on dry land. Many pets
love to hike or bike with their
humans. The majority of safe-
ty tips for these types of ac-
tivities match those discussed
earlier for summer walks and
exercise. Because hikes and
bike rides might be longer in
duration, you may want to
think about a pack filled with
supplies that will ease the heat
for your pet. Pawsitively Natu-
ral carries some great items for
hiking, including boots,
packs, cooling vests
and collapsible
water bottles.
Many pet stores
carry water bot-
tles with special
tops for easy pet use. Mather
recommends carrying frozen
water bottles to ensure cold
fresh water throughout
the hike. She also
mentioned
my favor-
ite tip: Re-
member that
getting there
is only half
the hike. You
will need to make
it back as well, so be sure
to stop at a reasonable point to
conserve your energy and pro-
tect your pet.

mous with vacation. School is
out and many businesses are
slower. While there are a num-
ber of pet-friendly hotels and
vacation spots, many people
make other arrangements and
bring in a pet sitter or choose

safety. Staff members receive

the care and attention they need
and that all preventative health
measures are taken. J.M. Pet
Resort specialists know that
the normal canine tempera-
ture is 101 degrees, a reading
that would be worrisome in
humans.  Staff members are
taught the signs and symptoms
of heat stroke, including exces-
sive salivation, diarrhea, pale
gums, disorientation, panting,
glazed eyes and unresponsive-
ness. Training also includes a
listing of breeds prone to heat
stroke, including short-nosed
breeds, dogs originating in ex-
tremely cold climates, double
coat breeds, young pups and
older dogs.
Food (and
water) for
thought
Seasonal shifts usher in
change. The adjustments we
make, whether it be changing
our wardrobes or eating more
fruits, seafood and vegetables,
ensure we take full advantage
of the season and experience
optimal comfort. It is impor-
tant to make similar adjust-
ments for our pets. Just as we
try to lighten our diets during
the hot summer months, a more
holistic approach to pet care
might incorporate more cool-
ing type foods. Russo suggests
more vegetables and fruits.
Some pets also do well with
cooler proteins like fish, pork
and eggs instead of the heavier
chicken, lamb and beef. Again,
all pets are unique, and you
have to rely on your personal
knowledge and be sure to con-
sult with your veterinarian.
Dietary shifts should be in-
troduced slowly; add the new
food to the old in stages to pre-
vent digestive issues. The goal
is a healthy, nutritious diet.
Adding cooling foods does not
mean eliminating meat pro-
tein. Brown maintains, “Meat
protein is still what animals
need and corn gluten meal just

doesn’t provide what is neces-
sary in a healthy diet.” Healthy
snacks are always a good idea
and summer fruit offerings can
spice up your pet’s diet. Incor-
porating fruits and vegetables
offers a healthy alternative to
packaged treats. Freeze some
string beans, blueberries or cut
bananas for a healthy snack.
Pets can become dehy-
drated quickly. Ensuring your
pets have access to fresh, clean
water is always important but
can become a serious health
issue during the summer.
Brown recommends hydrating
kibble with water throughout
the year. Add water and let the
dog or cat food sit for approxi-
mately 10 minutes. The food
will swell a bit, and your pet
will benefit from the increased
water intake. “You can actu-
ally feed a little less food this
way, particularly during the
summer months,” Brown adds.
Water content and sources are
also important.  Brown sug-
gests a reverse osmosis sys-
tem, available at many local
hardware stores, to eliminate
possible additives and carcin-
ogens from tap water.

vous system. What if we take
this Framework and bend it
as well as distort it? When
this distortion occurs muscles
strain and begin to fail, organs
abnormally function due to
crowding within the body, ab-
normal body chemistry occurs
due to a change in circulation
and waste product build up. To
restore this function we need
to restore the Framework as
well as correct the cause of the
Framework distortion.
Many Framework distor-
tions are caused by an abnor-
mal or uneven foundation. The
foundation in living things is
the Sacrum. A change in the
movement of the Sacrum will
cause spinal distortions result-
ing in a loss of energy and vi-
tality while the body attempts
to overcome this mechanical
defect. In the quadruped [your
horse] there is a second foun-
dation which is located in the
lower neck.
You may be asking your-
self “what causes this distor-
tion?” Well any stress be it
physical or emotional can cre-
ate a short circuit within the
nervous system resulting in ab-
normal muscle movement and
pull. This abnormal pull can
create locking of joints with
ensuing compensation in other
joints as well as an alteration in
the two foundations being that
of the Sacrum and lower neck
bones. Once this distortion oc-
curs the cascade of health is-
sues begins.
There are two sets of par-
allel muscles in the body that
travel from the Sacrum/ Pel-
vis along both sides of the
spine all the way to the skull.
These muscles must work in
harmony. When the Sacrum
and Pelvis lock up in move-
ment similar to a “stuck hinge”
these parallel muscles alter in
function. A method in Chiro-
practic called “Logan Basic”
is utilized to help correct the
ligament and Sacrum function
thus allowing for restoration of
Body Framework. How Lo-
gan Basic works is very sim-
ply. The Sacrum is the founda-
tion of the spine much like the
foundation of your house {see
picture 1} when this founda-
tion is stuck out of position it
will alter the structure of the
whole spine that sits above
home’s structure. There is
a ligament that supports the
movement of the Sarcrum
called the Sacrotuberous Liga-
ment {See Picture 2} that of-
ten times it will become taught
when the Sacrum motion is al-
tered. Logan Basic Technique
has its focus on contacting this
Sarcrotuberous Ligament with
the doctors finger and utilizing
a specific amount of tension in
a specific direction to ease the
ligament tension and allow all
of the muscles and joints above
the Sacrum to relax in order to
improve the Chiropractic Ad-
justment effectiveness. Logan
Basic also has a great impact
on the portion of the nervous
system that controls organ
function since these nerves are
located within the Sacrum re-
gion as well.
Many times Logan Basic
has helped with colic, diges-
tion, incontinence, impregnat-
ing difficulties, and even labor.
Logan Basic Technique has
been used with people since
the 1930’s and Animal Chiro-
practic has been using it over
the years as well.

jump in the pool with you?
It’s good to know that there
are some dangers posed by
swimming pools that could
prove harmful – even fatal to
your pet. Here are some ideas
that can keep your pet safe
this summer:
1). Assess your dog’s
ability to swim. Although
most dogs have the ability
to swim, this doesn't mean
yours is one of them. Old age,
physical disabilities such as
blindness or limited vision or
other limitations can hinder
your pet’s ability to survive in
the pool.
2). If your dog displays
an interest in getting in the
pool, show him how to get
in and out. Repeatedly show
him and familiarize him with
the shallow end and the steps
that lead out. You may even
want to install pet steps or a
pet ramp (incline), which is
hooked onto the sidewall of
the pool if your pet has trou-
ble climbing stairs.
3). Monitor your pets
around a pool – just as you
would children. Even if they
are familiar with the location
of a pool, they may inadver-
tently fall in.
4). A pool alarm will alert
you to the sound of the sur-
face water and water below
many types of pool alarms-
many have adjustable levels
of sensitivity-that will alert
you to danger.
5). Chlorine can irritate
a pet’s eyes as well as their
ears and lungs. Check your
pet periodically for signs of
irritation to the chlorine in the
water.
6). Use eco-friendly prod-
ucts to clean your pool that
are also pet-friendly. Convert-
ing your pool to a saltwater
pool is a healthy alternative
to one that is chlorinated and
cleaned with other chemicals
that aren’t pet-friendly.
7). After a swim, make
certain to rinse off your pet
with fresh, clean water. Al-
ways have some fresh, clean
drinking water available and
accessible for your dog.
8). Make sure that the
pool water is not too cold for
your pet and that he does not
develop hypothermia.
9). Limit your pet’s time
in the pool as well as in the
hot sun.
10). If your pool is sur-
rounded by concrete, brick or
tile, guide your four-footed
friend to a shaded, grassy area
where he can rest after swim-
ming and where his paws
won’t get burned.
Enjoy the pool with your
dog – he may even want to
swim alongside you and join
in the fun and games!

 Are boundaries good or bad?

am one of those people
who want everyone to
just get along and be
happy. But lately, I have given
a lot of thought to the subject
of boundaries. Are boundaries
good or bad? Spiritual leaders
and physicists alike tell us there
is evidence that we originate
from some sort of ancient pri-
mordial soup, with all kinds of
energetic connections between
us. But if we are so connected,
why can’t we get this conflict
thing figured out? Why can’t
we all just get a long?
We are led to believe that
we are human beings having
HORSE
TALK
a spiritual experience. Now
I find out, we are spiritual be-
ings having a human experi-
ence. “Aha!” To be human
is to be compartmentalized.
Like horses, we want to know
where we stand in the peck-
ing order. On the surface,
we crave companionship, but
we rebel against dependence.
We want to be close, but often
build walls to keep others out.
We talk a good game about
love and understanding, but
loves and understands
discord. We are a mass of
contradictions. It would
seem that boundaries are
counterproductive… or
are they?
It is boundaries that
enable us to assume a
leadership role to help
others. For example, as
the sun sets on my chil-
drens’ teen years, I have
been digesting a difficult
lesson about needing to
be a parent to my kids be-
fore trying to be a friend
and confidant.
Just like children, horses
need rules and boundaries to
know which behaviors are
okay and which behaviors
are not okay. Otherwise they
may feel as though they need
to fend for themselves. That’s
when they get in trouble. If
we have rules and guidelines
for them, the structure gives
them security and builds their
confidence in you.
The best way I have found
to develop self assuredness in
a young horse is through con-

from meaningful, confident,
awareness. If your horse
knows what to expect from
you, it gives him confidence
too. But consistency isn’t the
same as a pattern. The dif-
ference between consistency
and a pattern is rooted in your
horse farm directory
awareness. To discover the
difference, try kissing some-
one whom you love. Kiss
them three times in a row,
then ask them if it was mean-
ingfully consistent… or just a
pattern?
Secondly, where it con-
cerns horses, physical bound-
aries are critical for safety. I
like to define an imaginary
bubble around myself – two
feet in every direction. This is
about the same as the personal
bubble I create around myself
for talking to people at work,
or in a social setting, unless
we are in Italy, where people
get much closer. If I am going
inside the horse’s imaginary
bubble, or inviting the horse
into my bubble, it needs to be
a conscious choice. If I get my
foot stepped on, and it catches
me by surprise, then one of us
without my aware-
ness. Circle back to
consistency… and try
again.
Finally, what about
emotional boundaries?
Too often I’ve seen
people get upset and
angry at their horse,
but it does not serve
the horse well. Anger
only confuses most
horses and infuriates
the rest. Horses are
what I call a one trial
learner. If a horse un-
derstands something,
he can learn it instantly… and
this may include things that
we’d rather he didn’t know
such as pulling, biting, rear-
ing, and so on.
I saw a woman at a horse
show unknowingly teach a
weanling to rear, almost top-
pling it, simply through yank-
ing on a lead line in such a
way that the filly got a release
every time she put her head in
the air. When the filly could
put her head no higher, her
front feet left the ground. It
only took two minutes.
At that tender age, this fil-
ly learned to respond to a yank
by rearing. Later, if the filly
was fortunate, someone would
spend the time and money to
reshape that response for safe-
ty’s sake. But at the time, the
handler most likely had no idea
thoring the very behavior she
was trying to discourage.
So if a person was to get
upset at a horse, the most eco-
nomical thing they could do
would be to remove them-
selves from the situation until
they could be more grounded.
Not only does the horse appre-
ciate it, but it is also cheaper.
I think we would do well
to give some thought to having
rules of conduct for ourselves
and our horses. Consider de-
fining your space and allow-
ing for others to have theirs.
And perhaps we could leave
our anger out of the equation
where it concerns horses.

 How to know if your turtle is dead

ent admitted a Rus-
sian tortoise to our
hospital for daily care. The
client noticed that the turtle
was having a hard time getting
its eyes open and had stopped
eating its food. We admitted
the turtle to the hospital after
a diagnosis of a severe respira-
tory infection. We gave anti-
biotics, supportive care and a
guarded prognosis.
Several days later one of
the technicians reported to me
that the turtle was dead. I ex-
amined the turtle and found
it was not dead, but very un-
responsive. I explained to
the cold
blooded vet
the technician that it was still
breathing as evidenced by
movement of its epiglottis (a
little lesson in careful observa-
tion). So the next day I exam-
ined the turtle to find that the
turtle was in fact now dead.
I reported this to the techni-
cian who came back to me a
few minutes later to report that
the turtle was in fact alive as
evidenced by movement in
its front legs (a little lesson in
careful observation).
This episode was repeated
two more times before we all
agreed that the turtle was in
fact dead. So what’s going on

Gus is a toy terrier Chihuahua mix,  1 1/2   year old
male, brown color, will be neutered and UTD on shots,
HW tested, he is de worm and de flea. He weights
about 18-20 pounds and loves to play ball in the yard,
he can fly through the air and has lots of fun. He is a
loyal dog that loves to be with you and go for leash
walks. He is very smart and willing to please you. Gus
would do best as the only pet in the house hold and no
cats or small toddler kids -- he should go to an adult family or person. Gus could
use some basic training and socializing and he needs more house training. His
former owner is having a baby and no longer wants Gus. Unfortunately the former
owners did not do to much with Gus, so he is NOW learning to be a dog, having
fun and trust people. Gus WILL BE A GOOD member of the family for somebody
that wants to give him that BIG CHANCE IN LIFE. He is at the shelter now, you can

Dixie is a spayed female almost 2 years old and has been with All
Paws Rescue since shortly after her birth. Sadly, she has watched
her 4 littermates find their forever homes. Dixie is shy and needs
a quiet home with no small children but she gets along great with
other cats and kittens. She also plays a mean game of laser tag.
In the right home Dixie will do fine but it will take some time for
her to adjust. If you have room in your home and room in your
heart, Dixie would make a wonderful feline companion.
Tara is a sweet and lovable black female who nuzzles
anyone’s legs who happens to be walking by - or standing
still.  She is vocal and loves a good session of ear scratch-
ing.  Tara’s littermates have all found forever homes, and
Tara is patiently waiting for hers.

Chronic Ear Disease In
Dogs & Cats
If your dog has had two or more ear infections in his or her life, you might have been told that
“all dogs gets ear infections,” or “it is normal for dogs with long, hanging ears to get ear infec-
tions,” or “all dogs that swim get ear infections,” or even that “it is because your dog is digging
in the dirt that he gets ear infections.” These are common misconceptions that Dr. Klaus Earl
Loft, who runs the Dermatology Service at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital in South
Weymouth, MA, has heard from owners who bring him their pets with chronic ear problems.
In reality, a dog that suffers from recurrent ear infections may actually have an underlying
allergic skin condition that, if diagnosed and treated properly, could eliminate or reduce the
incidence of future ear infections.
If your dog has had ear problems that began when he or she was younger than 3 to 4 years of
age, it is likely that the ear problem is secondary to allergies. Older animals that develop their
first ear infection later in life may have problems other than allergies that are the cause for the
ear infection.
In veterinary medicine, it is often the dermatologist who deals with chronic ear diseases in
dogs and cats. This is very understandable, since the ear and the skin are one and the same
organ, and clinical signs associated with the ears are often part of a generalized dermatologic
condition. Some dogs that present with an ear infection will have other clinical symptoms that
are suggestive of allergies, such as foot licking and chewing, itchy skin, reoccurring skin infec-
tions in the groin or elbow area, greasy and scaly hair coat, and/or patchy hair loss. These
symptoms can seriously affect the quality of life in these pets, and managing patients afflicted
with chronic allergic ear disease has become a passion for Dr. Loft. Using the videotoscope at
VCA South Shore for both the diagnosis and treatment of these frustrating chronic ear prob-
lems has increased Dr. Loft’s ability to determine the best therapeutic options for these
patients, and to help deal with the often severe discomfort associated with ear infections.
If Dr. Loft suspects that allergies are the underlying cause for a patient’s chronic skin or ear
issues, he can offer either intradermal or serologic testing for both cats and dogs. Once a spe-
cific allergic cause is identified, he will treat the patient with Allergen Specific Immunotherapy
(commonly known as “allergy shots”). This hypo-sensitization is very similar to what is offered
to humans with atopic dermatitis.
If your dog or cat suffers from reoccurring ear problems or other chronic skin conditions, ask
your regular veterinarian for a referral, or feel free to call VCA South Shore Animal Hospital,
to schedule a consultation with Dr. Loft. In Dr. Loft’s opinion, “Until proven otherwise, a
pet with chronic ear disease is an allergic pet.”
