Assignment-1 (2016-17-II)

CHE 331 A

1. A human being (75 kg) consumes about 6000 kJ of food per day. Assume that the food is
all glucose and that the overall reaction is
C6H12O6 + 602 6C02 + 6H20, -Hr = 2816 kJ
Find man's metabolic rate in terms of moles of oxygen used per m3 of person per second.
Assume the density of man to be 1000 kg/m3.
2. Liquid A decomposes by second-order kinetics, and in a batch reactor 50% of A is
converted in a 5 minute run. How much longer would it take to reach 75% conversion?
3. Find the conversion after 1 hour in a batch reactor for
A R, -rA = 3CA0.5 mol/(liter.hr) ; CA0 = 1 mol/liter
4.
The first order (-rA = kCA,) reaction is carried out in a tubular reactor in which
FA0=5 mol/min, the volumetric flow rate, v, is constant. i.e. v = vo.
Determine the reactor volume necessary to reduce the exiting concentration to 95% of the
entering concentration when the volumetric flow rate is 10 dm3/min (i.e.,liter/min) and
the specific reaction rate, k is 0.11 min-1. Calculate the volume of a CSTR for the
conditions used to figure the plug-flow reactor volume.
5. Use Polymath to solve the following set of nonlinear algebraic equations with initial
guesses of x = 2, y = 2. (No need to submit solution for this question; this is for your
practice only)
x3y 4y2 + 3x = 1
6y2 -9xy = 5
