Science Lesson
Materials: blank paper for students to record first observations, 3 objects for small group discovery,
Index cards 1-4 (3 sets), 12 objects for the game
Standards: 5-PS1-3 Matter and Its Interactions: Make observations and measurements to identify
materials based on their properties.

Objectives: I can identify an object based on its properties.

Prerequisite Skills: Students have previously learned what a solid liquid and gas are. Students
have been given the skills and experiences to be able to observe an object. The students have
previously discussed as a whole class so a whole class discussion should be something that the
students can do. Students know how to identify properties.
Procedures:

Have students observe the objects on the tables- have examples on each table
3 Objects: Rock, Apple Cider Vinegar, Dish Soap
How would you describe it? What do you notice?
Generate a list in the paper given
Generate Characteristics given object during whole class:
What are the characteristics that you have noticed? What observation did you make
to come to that conclusion?
These characteristics are properties. Characteristics are the same as properties.
Have you heard of the word properties before? What do properties describe?
Property Mix-Match Game
Generate Definitions of Physical Properties at your desk..similar to our list on the
board.
Write three properties. But do not place the name of the object on the card.
Rotate around and try to decide what object matches the properties. Read the
properties carefully.

Assessment: The assessment is a formative assessment to measure how much the students have
learned. Through discussion I will be able to check for students understanding and will also help me
know what are next steps will be. These are the discussion questions: After playing this game and
generating a list of properties. What can you say about properties? At your table groups flip over the
index cards and compare/contrast your properties. Looking at our list on the board what are
similarities? What are differences? Next time we are working on how some properties are similar
and different.
