Abstract

A system of optical fiber sensor for measuring the frequencies of acoustic vibration has been
designed. This sensor system consists of a fiber-optic cable with 18 cm length, a red laser
LED ( = 650 nm) as a light source/ transmitter, and a photodetector OPT 101 as a
receiver of light reflected by a vibrating object. The test object used in this research is an
electromagnet speaker which is vibrated by a periodic signal from a signal generator. The
change of the vibration magnitude of the speakers membrane causes the change of light
intensity received by photodetector. Consequently, the potential different between the two
leads of photodetector also changes by the changes of light intensity it received. Refers to the
values of the frequencies showed on the signal generator, the changes of the voltage is
processed by a microcontroller module and displayed on a PC monitor screen in the form of
the values of the objects vibration frequencies. According to the test performance of the
system, it can be concluded that the system can be used to measure acoustic vibration of an
object in the range of 52 Hz to 360 Hz, with the average accuracy of 93,58%.
