THE BIOSPHERE
Earth itself could be considered a massive ecosystem, in which the living and nonliving worlds
interact through four major subsystems: the atmosphere, hydrosphere (all the planets waters,
except for moisture in the atmosphere), geosphere (the soil and the extreme upper portion of the
continental crust), and biosphere. The biosphere includes all living things: plants (from algae and
lichen to shrubs and tres), mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, aquatic life, insects, and all
manner of microscopic forms, including bacteria and viruses. In addition, the biosphere draws
together all formerly living things that have not yet decomposed.
Several characteristics unite the biosphere. One is the obvious fact that everything in it is either
living or recently living. Then there are the food webs that connect organisms on the basis of
energy flow from one species to another. A food web is similar to the more familiar concept food
chain, but in scientific terms a food chaina series of singular organisms in which each planto r
animal depends on the organism that precedes or follows itdoes no exist. Instead, the feeding
relationships between organisms in the real world are much more complex and are best described
as a web rather tan a chain.

Stonehenge
Stonehenge is a Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monument located near Amesbury in the
English county of Wiltshire, about 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury. Its geographical location is
511043.87N, 14935.07W.
It is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones and is one of
the most famous prehistoric sites in the world.
Archaeologists think that the standing stones were erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC
although the surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the
monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC.
The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCOs list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a
colistng with Avebury henge monument, and it is also a legally protected Scheduled Ancient
Monumet. Stonehenge itself is owned and managed by English Heritage Whilst the surrounding
