Youmayloveyourpet,butdoesyourpetloveyou?Mostanimalloversclaimthatanimals
definitelyexperienceemotions.Manystoriesaretoldofolderdogswhobecomejealouswhena
newdog(orababy)arriveshome.Formanyyears,however,scientistsdidnotagreethat
animalsexperiencedemotionsthesebehaviours,theysaid,weresimplyphysiologicalreactions
toexternalstimuli.Butnownewresearchisbeginningtoconfirmthatanimalsmayhavefeelings
muchlikeours.
Recentstudieshaveshownthatmanyanimals,includingchimpanzees,dogs,horses,ratsand
birds,experienceemotionssimilartohumanjealousy,griefandlove.Fearhasalsobeenwidely
observedbyscientists,perhapsunsurprisingly,sincethisemotionhelpsinsurvival.Biologist
SamuelGoslingclaimsthatdogsexhibitfourdimensionsofpersonality:affection,sociability,
emotionalstabilityandcompetence,acombinationofintelligenceandobedience.Theseare
similartothecategoriesofhumanpersonalitygenerallyfoundinbasicpsychologicaltests.
Otherstudieshaveshownthatwhenarecordingofdogslaughterisplayedtootherdogs,they
starttoplaywitheachother,andratswholaughfrequentlyseemtobepopularamongother
rats,offeringfurtherproofofemotionsamonganimals.Inaddition,animalsrespondtoanti
depressantdrugsandthisprovesthattheirbrainchemistry,whichisaffectedbythedrug,must
besimilartoours.Expertsbelievethattheiremotionsmustthereforebesimilar,too.
However,ifanimalsreallydohavehumanlikeemotions,therearesomeseriousissuesto
consider:howfairisit,forexample,forhumanstokeepanimalsincages,orusethemfor
pharmaceuticaltesting?
